Isn't Broad Marsh supposed to be getting a massive redevelopment soon? Great time to build an Apple store in Nottingham I'd say!

I've only ever spoken to KRCS Notts over the phone when I was shopping around for repair prices for my G4 PowerBook, when the trackpad temp. sensor went. I didn't get that good an impression from KRCS, and instead went for Jigsaw Systems, also in Nottingham.

They arranged a courier to come and collect my PB (due to university schedules and the time it took to get from Loughborough to their shop by public transport) and said it would cost £10. A few days later, they phoned back saying they "couldn't find anything wrong" (on later inspection of the log files, the tech guy was looking for the wrong thing and had misunderstood me). I went and got my laptop and wasn't charged a penny - not even for the original courier to take it up to Nottingham. They seemed a nice company to deal with.

Eventually got Apple in Bluewater, Kent to fix my PB when I went home from uni for the summer, when I could actually afford to be without it for a week. Great service from there, apart from in the wallet department - £195.05 for a top case repair and labour. Still, they did the job in half the time they said they would.

Don't know about redevelopment :p so many shopping centres in Nottingham now but not enough computer shops!

Apple in Derby

We're getting an Apple Store in Derby when the new shopping centre opens later this year. :p

I was hopefull about this until I checked on the list of stores in the development - it quotes KCRS (apple)! Maybe better off with Gordon Harwoods.
By the way, first post here. Lurker for a while, hoping to get my first Mac (Macbook) when Leopard arrives.

Hello everyone, I just thought I would give bit of defense to our company!

I'm sorry to the OP who had a bad experience recently in the new Victoria Centre store. The staff in there are all Mac enthusiasts and all have their own areas of specific knowledge. External audio interfaces are something we stock, but extended knowledge of non-stocked items might be outside some staffs comfort zone. You should have been passed on though to someone with more knowledge.

Dealers such as us try to be friendly and chatty to all our customers, but sometimes (after being asked when the iPhone will be launched for the hundredth time) it is difficult to be 100% chatty with every customer. The staff in the Victoria Centre will see this thread, and we will try to understand how we have let down those people who have posted here. Thanks to the people who've leapt to our defense, and thanks to the complainants for bringing it to my attention.

We are a nice, Apple specialist company, and if you have any problems with our service please contact me on r.woods@krcs.co.uk

Rob Woods
Sales Director, KRCS Group

PS. We are indeed opening a store in Derby soon and are recruiting (see www.krcs.co.uk for more details).

Wow so this has actually grabbed their attention. Well fair enough for your explaination but it was the first time I'd ever been in a KRCS and first impressions are what count. It was a bad experience so I will not be using any of your stores. External audio devices are not unfamiliar as there are quite a few people who buy them and yes I can understand about the guy not knowing about ExpressCards, haven't found anyone who really does which is a shame.

It has been a while since this reply, but out of interest R Woods, will there be any offers when the new store opens? 9th October is the day after my birthday, I will have money to spend and I am in the market for a Macbook! (before people ask, no I am not getting the price of a Macbook as a present!).

Hey there,

I can give you some info about ExpressCards... there are basically two options out there for you, both being very pricey.

Option One: Pro Tools HD1 rig, the PCIe card itself is £4,750 and that is just the card. You would then need an interface which start at £1,315. Which as you can see is not cheap.

Option Two: Apogee Symphony Mobile, again you buy the card and then the number of interfaces you require. Prices on these vary from place.

There are a few converting boxes out there that will convert the PCIe slot into a regular PCI slot. But using these I wouldn't recommend, the heat dispensing from them would not be healthy.

I've just assumed that you have a MacBook Pro?? The other options you have are FireWire interfaces with LightBridge capabilities, which you can have up to 32 channels with the M-Audio LightBridge. This option is not only cheaper but still gives the option of running Pro Tools, M-Powered Pro Tools is identical to the Pro Tools software you get in the HD1 Rig. Obviously Logic Pro 7 or 8, and most other major players like DP, and Cubase. will read both interfaces.

PCIe isn't something that is majorly support at the moment, but it is getting better now as Apple seemed to have made it a standard on their MBP, which is good because it will eventually give you more I/O at higher sample and bit rate.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Thought I'd add some links for you to check out...

Pro Tools - http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=86&langid=51&itemid=4886

Apogee - http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/symphonymobile.php

M-Audio - http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/ProFireLightbridge-main.html

with the M-Audio I'd recommend the Octane preamps to go with it... http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Octane-main.html

I would've added these links with the original post, but I was just finishing work!!

Although the PCIe will offer a more secure solution to multiple I/O don't rule out FireWire, FireWire is still very secure and plenty quick enough.

Of course any other PreAmps with LightPipe outputs will work with the M-Audio LightBridge, and with PreAmps it's all down to personal preference and budget.

just read this and felt compelled to register and reply.

i've used KRCS in the past and have always been very unimpressed by their attitude and service. they really give the impression that they can't be bothered. instead i recently visited gordon harwoods in derby to buy my new macbook pro and got the best customer experience i've ever had. the staff were very helpful and incredibly knowledgeable

they've had a shop opposite the cathedral for about 6 months, any midlands folk reading this should pop in for a look

KRCS Computers are offical Apple resellers in Nottingham. I went in today and spoke to a Scottish guy there about ExpressCards and external audio hardware and he didn't have a clue plus he was the most unenthusiastic and arrogant dude ever. Anyone had similar experiences with guys who know nothing about what they are meant to be selling or at least have an idea of?
I live in Nottingham too, go there quite a bit and really, it's alright i guess. i get all my info from here and then go and buy.

Roomey, i can only echo those words.. I've been to a good number of the KRCS stores in Nottingham, Leicester and Leeds for one reason or another. Each store seems to employ the same dis-interested and unenthusiastic droids the OP is talking about!!

On two occasions i've been kept waiting weeks whilst a faulty item was repaired or replaced under warranty. I guess i gave them a few chances too many in the hope that i had a bad experience - which inevitably does happen.

I do like to support local businesses, and living in Ripley (Derbyshire) thought that Nottingham was my closest Apple reseller store... how wrong i was!

When I found out about GHC (Gordon Harwoods) opening in Derby, I popped along to see what the fuss was about. Rather than just have a nosey, I'd been tinkering with transferring music from my old iBook to a MacBook i'd recently bought (from Apple Online store) but just couldn't get the hang of it. I wanted an iPod too, but had by that point not made a decision - it was either an iPod Nano for the gym, or an iPod 80GB for sheer storage size.

I have to say that the staff at GHC were fabulous, a world away from KRCS. They were very knowledgeable, very interested in what i wanted and what would be the best solution for me and really happy to help me whatever i decided. They even showed me how to copy music from my old iBook G4 to my new iPod and then on to my new MacBook!

I've shopped quite a few times with GHC now, and have even bought through their mail order web-site, again, an extremely pleasing experience from start to finish - GHC now get my vote every time.

I've also found out that GHC also have a store in Alfreton, and if the staff at the GHC store in Derby are anything to go by, then i'll be a very happy camper visiting there this weekend when i plan to purchase my iPod Touch!!
