But currentC already failed. Many of the members of that group, notably including CVS and the aforementioned Target have relented and already accept contactless and apple pay at their stores. Just Walmart is more stubborn and persists in its refusal.
While currentC failed Walmart's ire towards anyone who has ever stepped in it's way will always last. Ask any vendor working with Walmart if they can host their infrastructure on Amazon. In fact, if you want to lose a pitch to Walmart just place AWS in the deck.

I never understood terminals that require a PIN after using Apple Pay. Apple Pay itself cannot be used unless it's unlocked by the owner. It's already secure, unlike cards with NFC or chips that don't require PIN and have no security at all. Literally anyone can take a stolen or lost card and use it until the owner cancels the card. How is that secure?
I think ENV contactless does not requre PIN But some places only have MST contactless

This has nothing to do with transaction costs, they just want to harvest more customer data. They really don’t pay anything extra for taking apple pay at their stores (though they might for taking apple pay online, but that’s another story). They still just pay the card network fees. If it were about money, they’d have to go cash only.
They might have to pay some up front development costs to program their POS systems to accept contactless, train people how to use it, and pay someone to do the software update. But once that's done, they don't have to do it again.

It’s weird that Kroger is finally catching up when my local King Soopers (a Kroger brand) has been accepting Apple Pay for at least 6 months now.
The various brands in the Kroger network have all operated somewhat independently. In the Seattle area we have Fred Meyer, who still don’t take NFC/Apple Pay and we have QFC who enabled NFC/ApplePay some time in 2020, I think. It was enough of a difference then that I would drive a couple miles further to the QFC to be able to use Apple Pay. The Fred Meyer store only takes full contact chips and magnetic strip. All too often the overworked reader fails to read the chip and forces you to use the magnetic strip. Too much wear and tear.

Strange situation in the US, here in EU (Sweden at least) Apple Pay just works everywhere. I wonder if in EU Apple Pay transaction cost is the same as regular contactless payment? Or what the reason might be? 🤔
There is no cost difference. The Apple Pay transaction looks like any other NFC credit card purchase.

These US companies resisting NFC and Apple Pay want you to user their own app to pay, usually with a QR code. that way they can negotiate lower interchange rates and they can track your spending habits.

Note that that article is not claiming that Apple Pay is charging more fees from a vendor than other car payment systems as some here have asserted.

Contactless could cause more transactions to be card based, though, potentially costing merchants more. Not to mention that it's a lot easier to route debit cards over networks other than Visa or MC if you force cards to be inserted.

Wow! Did I die and just not get the memo?

Certainly didn’t see this coming anytime soon.
Please let Home Depot & Lowe’s be next.

While they're at it can Home Depot add a "Email only" and "No receipt" options?

Their self checkout system is otherwise unironically the best, most reliable I've experienced.

Why do I have to scroll all the way to the bottom to enter a comment, why doesn’t the new comment entry field go to the top of these stupid forums?

What about Mariano’s‘s, they’re owned by the same company?

I just want to also state how weird it is from the perspective of someone in the UK…

I only use my Apple Watch to pay for things. It’s been literally years since I paid with a physical card. I was working in retail until a year ago and honestly, the only people using cards still were 50+, most would use their phones (iPhone or Android) and a few would use watches.

Agreed, and as you say it’s not as if the UK and many other countries are only slightly ahead on the adoption curve compared to the USA, contactless payments in the UK have been pretty much everywhere for years now. I‘ve paid for everything using my Apple Watch for the last 3 years since I first got one and I used my iPhone for everything for many years before that. Now even Big Issue homeless people all take contactless and many (most by now?) street charity collectors too. I’m not sure I would be able to find a single retail establishment, even a single-person flower stall in a tiny village, that couldn’t take contactless payment.

Or it could be something as simple as shopping elsewhere. Simple?

Maybe not...

The problem I have is that the local Krogers is the only store that sells the no-fat yogurt I like, and also garlic-mushrooms (it's a sin, I know).

So if the other store in the area that does support Apple Pay carried those two things, I'd be fine totally dumping Krogers (until they wake up). I can't comprehend how a commodity product like no-fat yogurt is not carried my more stores. They *used* to carry it, and I'd buy 3 or 4 of them at a time. *shrug*

The mushrooms I can probably live without. Yeah, sometimes it's simple to shop elsewhere. But other times it is. (The other store does have no-fat yogurt, but it's their own 'brand', which is sometimes 'strange'. Pretty much everything else I need is bought there so they aren't hurting from not getting my Apple Pay facilitated money)

Just like all restaurants don’t have or need wi-fi. All stores don’t have or need Apple Pay

🤔

But the restaurants and stores that DO have wifi make life so much easier. I like to read the news, check weather, etc. Stores without wifi make researching products harder, and Apple Pay is just so ridiculously much quicker and more secure.

Stores don't need a lot of things, but if they want to attract customers, they should want to make it easier for those customers to find things, research things, and PAY for those things. Apple Pay is one service that helps make payments quicker, easier, more secure. I used to shop at a hardware store that used an old time first generation electric cash register, the ones with the window that had the numbers pop up in there and it was kind of cool, but time consuming. Would I want to wait for that to happen now? Hmm, sadly, no.

Imagine a store that didn't take credit cards. I'm sure they will have people just beating down the door to spend their cash money.

Exactly.

Stores that don't accept contactless payments in 2023 are like stores that didn't accept credit cards in 2003.

It's ridiculous. Way past time. They need to get with the program.

Their decisions are bad and they should feel bad.

🤣

Ok, but that would be for nfc contactless in general, not specifically for apple pay. Apple doesn’t deal with merchants at all. At least not for in-store apple pay acceptance (online is a different animal). As long as they have nfc contactless they can accept apple pay too.

I agree that businesses should provide the convenience of faster forms of payments. A person is more likely to forget there wallet 🪪 than there phone 📱

Kroger is the only grocer in my area. So of course, the whole family has starved for years until we can cut Apple in on each food purchase transaction. The kids are only about 65% as tall as their classmates and we can count all of our ribs from 20 paces... but who needs basic nutrition if Apple can't have a bite of every dollar spent? ;)
Most children once they get adequate nutrition tend to catch up to where they should be so hopefully this happens soon and everything should be fine

My Apple Pay wishlist:

- Walmart and Lowes acceptance (or ANY form of tap-to-pay)

- Target allowing Debit RedCard to be added and used in my Apple Wallet
This, especially the Target thing... For Lowes, I use the Lowes card to get 5% off, so support for that would be nice, as well.

Sam’s is easy. Just scan and pay. As for me, HEB, Home Depot and Lowe’s are the last holdouts.
I don't see H-E-B getting Apple pay anytime soon. They just replaced all of their pay terminals with non contact free devices. The old ones were capable of tap and pay, they never turned it on at most stores. They test drove Apple pay at a location I shop at for about 6 months and then one day it was turned off, not be seen again anytime soon.
