the m2 is predicted to be very similar in CPU performance as the m1 but will have 2 extra GPU cores. we already know that the macbook air cannot handle the thermals of the 8 GPU core option while heavy load, so 9-10 cores will definitely be too much for it to handle. if Kuo is correct, then i have to assume that the new macbook air will get a new chip once M3 arrives with smaller processes.
Nope. The M2 will be more power efficient than the M1, so those 2 extra GPU cores won't impact thermals/battery life too much. (The extra GPU core in the iPhone 13 Pro certainly doesn't impact thermals/battery much if at all).

I don’t think it’s a typo or mistake, just a misunderstanding. Some people have used “M1” to mean “ARM Macs”. Through a game of Chinese telephone, this then ended up as “the Air will have an M1”. It’ll obviously have an M2.

The Mac Studio performs better than the top of the line Intel Mac Pro costing 3 times as much and will be substantially cheaper than any comparable alternative in the industry right now… they’re effectively bringing prices down across the board.
with the M1 Ultra bashing Intel's brains out, they might as well drop the Xeon from the Mac Pro and put in consumer grade i9 Chips. I would love a 12900K (or 13900K) inside the Mac Pro. it would allow me to make an all-in-one system for MacOS, Windows, gaming, and workstation.

Apple said that the M1 Ultra that's in the Mac Studio is the last of the M1 family. The Mac Pro sounds like it will use the next generation architecture.
I don't have any insider knowledge, but I find this to be an interesting assumption. Mac Pro is not only the strongest performer, it also (1) modular and (2) reliable. Intel X chips are always a generation behind because it's essentially tested heavily over time and supporst things like ECC memory.

While I think having a new M2 would make sense, I think it's equally likely that the Mac Pro is just a bunch of M1 ultras. Perhaps, M1 ultra has a secret up its sleeve, is what Apple working on how to get M1 chips working with discrete graphic cards and user replaceable ram? who knows?

I would love to have an incredible power managing M2. Close to M1 performance but crazy long battery life. Like, never bring a charger with me throughout my normal day kind of battery life. No notch if the bezel is white. MagSafe 3. Center Stage. Green similar to the new Alpine Green. I would spend a price increase of a couple hundred or so if the redesign is amazing. cough24plushourbatterylifepleasecoughcough

there are 2 reasons for now that shows the mac pro will be on M2 family
Apple said this will be the last SoC in the M1 family and right after, you know that you cannot go any further with the M1 since you have interconnection just in 1 side with the M1 max...so you cant go 2xM1 ultra
So, 90% mac pro will be on M2 family....and we already know for the past decade that their silicon is realilble, Apple knows silicon, i hope Apple will keep Johny Srouji as long as they can

This guy is as changeable as the weather. No M2 chip now??? His tea leaves must be too soggy. Doubt that the air will get a refresh this year, looking like Mac Pro, iPhone and watch to come.

Other possibilities: an entirely new line that’s not part of the M line. Multiple m chips together in a traditional multi-cpu setup.

again, this account should be taken with a grain of salt ! he already made 2 mistakes on this account on the last 5-6 days

very possible, but not in the apple fashion way....they want their apple silicon in as many of their devices...if they make a just mac pro M chips...that will ignore the apple purpose of making big marginal profits
I mean that R&D spendings for those SoCs will be just for 1 device only
But we will see, cannot wait

Maybe they're looking at the desktop / notebook market where Intel have the i3 / i5 / i7 / i9 CPUs and have maintained the branding of the CPU across multiple generations. Similarly, AMD have the Ryzen 3 / 5 / 7. So perhaps the chip name doesn't increment as it does in the mobile market (iPhone / iPad). This allows for spec bumps between generations of Macs, without the cognitive dissonance that releasing the M2 chip in lower end Macs might cause when higher end Macs still have a variant of M1 chip.
No. The equivalent is Mx / Mx Pro / Mx Max / Mx Ultra.

Even Intel chips have the generation number after the dash.

I have the money to buy the MacBook Pro but im the kind of person that likes light, thin, portable devices. MBP is too heavy and too bulky to carry everyday; in addition, it’s to powerful (and pricey) for me to browse amazon and youtube. So, i hope new macbook air has the balance of portability and power and new design that we all are waiting for. And PLEASE!!!, dark grey or grey color (with black keyboard) for the more serious apple-brothers.

Lol wut? They release it with a M1 in nov 2020 and in later 2022 it’s gonna be redesigned with the same chip when an iPad Air will also have the same chip???
Considering the fact that 2 years later, none of the competitiors were able to deliver a product that would match up with the M1 yet, I think that there isn’t much pressure on Apple.

Honestly I and probably many others wouldnt mind the M1 still used for the refresh. The design of the Air is literally meant to do litte to average computing, I dont get people asking for 32GB of RAM and more powerful chips. If they make an all white Air option, a more flat edged design like the Pro and keep the price for base or drop it to 899 it's an insta buy for me.

This is true, but Apple by and large has avoided putting older ARM chips in their devices. The SE just got the A15. You could make a good argument that a 13 would’ve been just fine.

Plus, people are just curious about the next generation.

Seems like being able to encompass the cost savings of retaining the M1 along with some enhancements (display, FaceTime camera, maybe better speakers) for a lower price would keep it extremely usable and popular. See MBA used all over the place.

Quo was wrong twice in the last 5 days.
First he said the new iPhone SE would have MM Wave.
It does not.
Secondly, he said the Macpro wouldn’t be out until 2023.
Apple once again reiterated during their event today that the Mac transition would be “two years” and even said the Macpro by name would be the next computer.
So I’m taking everything that he says with a grain of salt.
Ming-Chi Kuo's predictions are not perfect, but they are more accurate than anyone else's.

Nope. There's no way they'll launch a new Air with the same internals. If they're actually thinking that, those people should be fired.

Now.... could it be an M1X that's faster and more capable than the M1 but isn't labelled M2? Sure. The name isn't actually important, but the capability of the chip is very important. Things I'd like to see from a new Air:

14" screen (same size, thinner bezels).
An option to support 2 external screens.
4 USB C ports.
An option to do 32G RAM

really, even more important than raw performance upgrades are capability upgrades. The current Air is limited in 3 ways... 16g RAM, 1 external screen, only 2 ports. Give me a small but reasonable performance bump and fix 2 of the other issues and I'm interested in laying down some ?

I don't necessarily expect all of this (aside from the screen) but I think it would make a more compelling release.
You already have what you want. It is called 14 inch MBP.

ipad air 5 is for you, light, powerful enough for those tasks, not bulky at all

they could that with the current M1 mba...to drop the price when the M2 Mba is released
