Well again, should those making the browsers be held accountable or Apple's MacOS for letting this happen? It is to the point of ridiculous. As a few mentioned, Mac Rumors itself can take up a lot of RAM.
The browsers can, and some do, provide tools that let you clean things up with sites poor code gets out of control. Firefox has a Task Manager that lets you see which tabs and process are taking too many resources and you can close them.

Those that perpetuates the myth that “16GB is more than enough on M1” is doing anyone they convince a disservice.
16GB can be enough on the M1. The problem is the "8GB M1 RAM is equivalent to 16GB Intel RAM" myth.

If you need X amount of RAM, you need X amount of RAM. Transitioning to Apple Silicon doesn't change anything.

Too soon; since when does a Mini get frequent updates? Unless there’s a problem with the M1 Mini (gen 1)…

No major redesign to the mac mini may be polarizing, but it's such a great design to begin with. Apple doesn't need to totally redesign their products every few years. I for one love the mac mini just the way it is with the one caveat being that it's always been a bit tricky to expand storage.. but I don't think Apple wants us expanding macs anymore anyway.

Personally, I think Apple will scrap the Mac Mini and go with the Mac Studio with a range of SOCs, M2, M2 Pro, M2 Max and M2 Ultra. The base M2 variant would be priced as it is now for the Mac Mini.

My dream of getting a mac mini "pro" will never come true at this rate. Mac studio is overkill in terms of my needs and also way out of my budget. a $1200-$1400 mac mini with 32 GB ram and an M1 Pro chip would have been the sweet spot for me, personally.
Yeah I think we're boned on this one. If the 2020 mini had four usb-c ports and 32 gb memory I think it the studio would have a significantly smaller audience. There's still hope for the next refresh!

Like many others here my issue is with ram. 16Gb is just not enough for a workflow which involves editing and content generation work across multiple Word documents, a spreadsheet or two, half a dozen browser windows each with a half dozen tabs and email etc. A mini with 32gb or 64gb would be ideal, it doesn't need extreme processing power, just more legroom. I don't need a studio, I need a mini with more ram.
Agreed in that some workflows are single-core, RAM bound. The M1 Max and M1 Ultra in that regard don't add much.

The marketing is simple. For those that need, or think they need more than 16GB must purchase the more expensive studio. It's very likely the mini will never see 32GB, no matter what M class cpu is in it. And since Apple is content to keep 8GB as a standard in many systems today (hey, that saves them like $20), if 32GB in a mini does come about, it'll be like the year 2030. Or more.

So.... the Mac Studio???
The Mac Mini used to have 4 thunderbolt ports and has had an SD card reader in the past, I don't see those as premium features, and I was just asking for USB ports not even Thunderbolt. If they want to put all the ports on the back so be it.

24GB of RAM as an option is less than 32/64/128GB.

2.5G Ethernet is less than 10G

M2 is less than M1 Max

Only thing would be WiFi 6E, but that's just tech we'd expect to see on newer released machines.

I think what I listed is reasonable for a lower end desktop.

Please put some ports on the front. With the current economy I've had to fire the tech assistant that I use to run around back of my iMac and plug my USB sticks in. If only mac's these days were as functional as they are stylish.

I was surprised that the current Mac Mini kept the same design. Given the MacBook Air’s internals, I think Apple could easily make a fanless Mac that’s slightly larger than an external disk drive. Mac Nano??? Please.
Remember that the MBA has an external power supply. That's not ideal for a desktop machine. That's what allowed that video the other week of the guy who shrunk the Mac mini M1 down.

I can't believe Apple is passing up a chance to foist a $199 Mac Mini stand on users by not launching a new design.
I purchased a third party, vertical one from MacSales for about $12.00 bucks. But it doesn't have an Apple Logo or roller skate wheels

I actually thought these going on sale meant a form change for the MacMini in 2022.

Is the current M1 Mac mini still worth it today? Just for casual use? If I don’t need tons of ports and current options are ok?

I’m happy about them keeping the design and existing form factor! That means it’ll still be compatible with my server rack mount.

I think this is a smart move as a lot of Mac based shops and businesses have multiple minis in a rack.

I’m happy with my M1 Mini, but I could use more RAM and a slightly better GPU.

My real hope is that they bring back eGPU support.

I am unsure how people can be absolutely sure there will be no major upgrade to the Mini such as more RAM or a better processor. Apple certainly can make a Mini that is featurewise less than the Studio and yet, perfectly in line with the laptops. Mini could be also positioned (as intended at one time) to bring people over to the Apple way of life from the PC world. A convert might start with a Mini and then add a laptop or iPad to go with it and that is a fair amount of change and less dollars going to PC makers. All of the above is just one way at looking at things and as others pointed out, whatever the Mini is, it shouldn't be competition for the Studio.

Ugh... Rename it the Apple π.
Either sharpen the corners again to make it completely square because we all know that πr².? Or make it round because as my grandpappi use to say, "Dunno what they're schoolin' you at that fancy university, but 'round here pies are round."?

Why not? I'm using my M1 Mac mini as my primary computer every day. With 8GB of RAM.

For this purpose, they'd optimise for price - not ports or performance, I think.

As nice and relevant as the mini may be, it may very well go ignored by Apple in favor of higher cost, higher priced systems. It's happened before. The mini is the red headed step child. It deserves better, but .....

With the M1 chip and a few 'fixes,' this would be a very popular system with non gamers in the PC world as it was before. The problem in the past was that this little item became more popular than expected with non entry level folks. The way that prices are going up, it still is positioned to get some interest as an entry Apple machine as is the lowest cost iMac.

I would say Apple should use the Mini Studio for ALL the Mini's and just change internals for the different performance levels. The Mini Studio has a great set of ports that would be good for people doing all levels of work.

That naming is interesting. Would be nice if Apple rebranded the higher end modal as a "Mac Mini Studio" as part of the Apple silicon Mac Studio desktop suite. When the M2 Mac mini comes out they don't need to wait for the M2 Pro as they can just slot in a M1 Pro chip in the higher end modal upgradeable to 32GB RAM. Only potential issue with the present casing might be thermals. An M1 Pro mini would sell like hotcakes as so many people (including myself) would not need more power than M1 Pro. But Apple knows that LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They might keep to their upselling strategy to force us up to Mac Studio M1 Max base modal. I hope I am dearly wrong.
Come on Tim...don't be stingy!!

Yes this would streamline the desktop series nicely. Not sure if we need all that bulk though for an entry M2 chip.
Would certainly be nice if Tim got a sudden surge of generosity and introduced an M1/M2 Pro Mac Mini Studio.
