I’d like to see the mini go even minier. They can rip out the PSU and use the same external brick the use on the iMac to get Ethernet as well. At this point I’m never expecting the Mini to be a prosumer level machine. I think at this point it’s clear apple is happy with the studio M1 Max option as the beefier mac mini and the mini will keep using the lower powered chips.

The Apple NUC!

I actually did a Hackintosh out of a very early Intel NUC and mounted it to the back of an ASUS display.

Was great!

Pretty much. I think it’d be nice.

With that said a future mini running the pro variant of the processor is the sweet spot for me even if nothing else changes. The base Studio is an overspend for me.

I was looking at a mini pro as well, however looking at MBP upgrade prices then a 32Gb M1 Pro with 512gb 10 CPU/16 GPU is about 300 less then a studio with the Max or 200 if add the 10Gbe option on mini.
Figure May as well get a studio and get the extra oomph.

Want the pro for the ProRes media engine for video editing and not interested in the lower Pro versions, ie 8/14

Its biggest customer base is hosting companies who have built custom racks to hold this form factor.
That is why have kept the shape the same for so long, so can slot into those racks.

There are also quite a few solutions, netstor, sonnet where can mount a mini inside an enclosure, which also could be affected by a change in format.

I'd love to see the Mini work off USB-PD, but I don't think it's going to happen, simply because then the Mini would be constrained in what it itself could power. But, personally, I'd take such a limitation any day. I have exactly two wires in my Mac Mini: the power cord, and the display cable, and my monitor could provide enough power easily.

Another reason I don't see it happen: I DO think there will be an Mx Pro Mac Mini. There's just too much of a gap between the M1 MM and M1 Max MS to not somehow bridge it. I wouldn't be too surprised if apple actually just dropped a suprise M1 Pro Mac Mini at WWDC. It has the PSU for it, and the cooling also.

they will need all the space they can get, because beyond the M1, their chips are throwing off heat

I agree. Keeping the same shape/size (maybe with a new top that's better for wireless signals) makes sense.

They may need or want that space for future chip versions and the requisite cooling, etc

I would say Apple should use the Mini Studio for ALL the Mini's and just change internals for the different performance levels. The Mini Studio has a great set of ports that would be good for people doing all levels of work.
This is a good idea. Put a Blu-ray in the box because some people don't want to stream everything, or simply can't.
The Intel NUC can easily cost like the new Studio. Yeah, it also doesn't have an optical drive. I think it should be an option without having to plug it into a port.

Well, that's a slap in the face, thank you.

Either they absolutely love this thing (the way it is), or they hate it and want to forget about it.

Which one is it?
The Mini has always been an after thought in their lineup. It was an aberration that it was updated to M1 so early. I think it was merely convenient to do it upfront. I'm worried that they'll end the high-end Intel model without replacing it. Right now their line-up is really missing the mid-range machines, i.e. anything with an M1 Pro in it. If you want an M1 Pro, you have to get a MacBook. It's not available in the Mini, iMac, or Studio. I'm hoping that will change.

Extremely bold prediction considering they just released a mid-to-high-end desktop that looks exactly the same just moar thicc. (Which I call lovingly the "Big Mac".)
Will it have a curved top and bottom?
It would require 4 little feet so it won't tip over.
So a hamburger with 4 feet will start to look like a spaceship. Steve would love it.
Roku could use the design for a Double Express.

USB-PD is 100W (I was quite sure they had upped that already but can't find the spec) which already pretty close to the PSU in the Mini so I don't see that as a problem.

You actually don't want something like this to be too small/light because then it starts annoyingly pitching and rotating from the weight of the cables plugged into it.

Agreed. I have a Raspberry Pi and like it, but the one annoying bit is exactly what you mention - it "tips over" to an extant because of the cables.

Or software developers who still need to test their Mac OS apps on Intel Macs.

That didn't stop Apple to phase out PPC Macs pretty fast in 2006.

If you need an Intel Mac to test your app and your existing one breaks, just buy some cheap used one that is barely getting OS support.

I'm hoping for this at WWDC, too. I agree that there's just much too large a gap from the Mini and the Studio.

I'm betting the new 2023 Mini will be very, very mini. Apple has been working on all sorts of new chip designs, VR stuff, and enhancing their inter/intra-networking of services. Their research and development just so happens to parallel this linked research at M.I.T. over the last twenty years. No more clumsy, keyboards, mice, microphones, cameras, cables, and multiple monitors. Say hello to the new 2023 Apple BioMac.... /S

I prefer the smaller design Prosser showed. If you use the external power supply/ethernet of the iMac you can easily reduce the size of the unit on the desk. Also, a plastic top can help with the Bluetooth signal issue.
If you use an external power supply, you’re not actually reducing the size, you just cheated by splitting up the volume.
