Unless you give it a hinged stand that would allow it to function has a desk tablet as well.

I tried a Surface Studio for stylus use. I'm one of those people who can't draw unless I have my piece of paper at a 30° angle and it was just too awkward given its size and the space it took up. It's useful for many, I'm sure, but not for me. A large screen such as this in 'kiosk' mode or using apps with comprehensive touch UI would be great, though. Although as for casually having a 27" tablet on your lap while the telly is on, that might be a bit much! 😂

You want to say that in 2023-2024 their support will be discontinued? Apple will not do this because users will feel cheated.

I don't see why support, or its planned obsolescence, will be trimmed down (what is it currently, 8 years?). Just that the production of Intel Macs will be halted.

I think this 2 year transition time what they communicated is optimistic and I am not sure, they already have complete solutions for everything. Keep in mind some things:

- for a complete transition they have to replace a 28 core Xeon W in the Mac Pro
- theoretically if they could do this before the end of 2022, than there would be also intel based Mac Pro that has been bought in 2022 and they can't obsolete them in 3-4 years

I think before 2026-27 we won't se that intel based Macs fall out.

27"? How about an iMac Pro with a 32" display?
Sure, I’ll take 32” as well but not an iMac Pro. They’ve served their purpose and now that the new Mac Pros are out, iMac Pros should be discontinued. I’d rather have Apple put out a desktop-class rather than workstation-class Mac Pro. Something that’s affordable, without the crazy specs but has all the configurability.

Depressing. And why 24" not 27"? My iMac's fan keeps revving randomly and it's going to sleep constantly. Need a new iMac like 'now'. Was really hoping for some new offering.

I'd be all over a new imac Pro. Bigger screen if possible, 30-32" in similar size enclosure, lots of ram and storage and serious graphics. But would be happy with a top end i9 rather than a xeon. I suppose it depends on how high they allow the custom imac to be specified...

Wasn't the whole presentation about showing how much Apple chips increased in performance over multiple years?

yup. Which doesn’t change the fact that if you only look at the processors, they’re much slower than Intel chips

Now it depends on the perspective of the view. The AS is apparently much faster in its tasks, which are identical to those of computers on Intel, but are performed using a different method and with a different view of performance. Since switching to a different system, there can no longer be a head-to-head comparison.

No touch screen. Touch screen on an iMac will make your arms hurt after a short time.

Only on a vertical stand. On a stand that allows you to tilt it horizontal or diagonal however. Like Wacom Cintiq's and Dell Canvas, etc.
As much as I want to see Apple offer this, I don't think they will do it. :/

Not sure how they'll reach their "incredible performance" goals by the end of the year, though. Right now, the A14Z is dramatically slower than Intel desktop CPUs and graphics performance is nothing compared to (some) dedicated GPUs.
Troll much?

The SoC used to cobble together the developer transition machine was a A12Z - essentially a two year old design with an extra graphics core updated for the 2018 iPad Pro. And it was pretty performant to my eyes.

Here's a comparison of most current cores from AnandTech - which compares this year's A13 high performance core - Lightning - to a bunch of competitors.

Note that Lightning beats everyone except Intel 10900K on integer, and Intel 10900K, Rizen 3950X, and Cortex-X1 (already at 5nm) have the edge in floating point.

The new Mac SoCs will be based on A14 on 5nm and will be the first to implement ARMv9, and the first to exceed 3ghz. Since they're custom silicon, Apple won't have to settle for whatever core configuration Intel or AMD makes available - they can have have as many high performance, high efficiency, and graphics cores as they want - and neural engine cores (not to put too fine a point on it).

Now that A series silicon is going into the Mac, it'll finally escape the lower power thermally constrained glass sandwich and can really spread its wings.

It'll be interesting to see where Firestorm (the new high performance A14 cores) places on that chart.
