Disappointed.
I'm finding the whole experience with airpods (either the pro or max) on the mac to be terrible.
That might be because my mac studio is still bluetooth 5.0 (the only annoying thing about it other than the hdmi port not being 2.1).
I'd have expected a bluetooth 5.3 model of the airpods max to be released today.

Does the balance slider in the accessibility section not help? Panning the audio balance should let you effectively lower the volume on one side to a desired amount. Sorry if this doesn’t do what you want. (Edit: @tgt beat me to it!)

Completely unrelated to the original post but it irks me to no end that there are so many additional settings hidden in the Accessibility menus as opposed to putting them all under Sound or whatever other category they’d relate to.

I’m assuming these will be updated from Lightning to USB-C to comply with the upcoming EU mandate (which covers headphones and headsets). In which case I wonder if Apple might take the opportunity to address one of the biggest misses with the AirPods Max which is that they don’t support Hi-Res Lossless even over a wired connection. A true USB connection should have more than enough bandwidth to allow the maximum sound resolution to be played.

(For the record Bluetooth 5.3 still doesn’t support true lossless either).

I had a date with a hot audiophile girl who insisted that her expensive Seinnheisers would sound better than my Airpods Max. So she brought them over on the second date. We compared. My Airpods Max won - not even close. I got laid that evening.

No way I would have gotten laid with her if my Airpods Max didn't win because she was a solid 9 and I'm an overachieving 5.
Outlier 😋🤣

Looking for the next ones! I don't mind waiting longer for them, since I'm still very happy with Gen. 1. And since they're so expensive, upgrading every 3-4 years seems pretty reasonable to me.

This is very sad and depressing news for me 😥

All Apple need to change on the AirPods Max is to switch the port to USB-C, and design an improved travel case. That's it. Why is everything taking so long? What's going on at Apple Engineering these days?

I really want the AirPod Max but won't be buying the current version with it's annoying and soon-to-be-obsolete Lightning port.
Just buy them (used). Life's too short to wait another two years for the next improvements.

I totally know what you mean, but I guess Apple sees such settings as really only aimed at those who need them rather than those who would like them. Maybe none of us would have those settings available at all if they weren’t as essential to the people for whom they make the difference between being able to comfortably use the devices at all or not.

My preferred solution would just be to have such settings both grouped in the accessibility section and individually categorised the other relevant sections at the same time.

I love Airpods Max stories because I can tell this story again: My AirPods Max got me laid.

PS. I'm also a huge fan of the original Homepod. Its sound quality seriously impresses girls when you're trying to have a wine and music night at your place. The key is really good bass, which the original Homepod has a lot of. You want the girl to feel the music physically while she's getting tipsy and having a nice chat. Try doing the same with a little Alexa speaker when you're only a 5. You'll never impress the girl. Get the chad big Homepod folks. Big Homepod & Airpods Max are the most underrated products in Apple's lineup.
Apple marketing should take note. 🤣

I agree, they should make those settings more accessible. 😄

As long as they replace dead batteries, there's not much point to refresh these headphones. They are already premium sounding cans. As long as you cannot improve sound quality (and 2-3 years is not a long enough time to do that), they should just wait.

If you look at all the premium headphones like HD800, how often do you think they are "upgraded"? Very seldomly.

Why is everyone crying over USB-C? I don't give two *****ts what cable charges the device, as long as it does ...I get the other parts of lighter design needed, maybe an on/off switch ... but i don't get excessive USB-C whining ...

I may be interested if they change that ugly bulky and heavy design ..
I’m kind of a headphones addict..in the past 5 years or so,I bought and compared around 10 pairs of wireless headphones (all highly rated models) and finally settled on Sennheiser Momentum 3.
Their sound quality is simply the best out of all.
by then we might be having the successor to BOSE's NC700 and i am looking forward to them

these overweights are not my cuppa tea as well

I do not know why Apple still sells Beats headphones, which have quite a low sound quality. Isn't Apple usually aiming for the best?
Not in this space.

This is how Apple is like two different companies. On the one hand you have Macs, and debatably iPads, which you can convincingly argue are both the best of their kind and justify their cost, even when you look at them from purely a functional, qualitative perspective, and you factor-in everything you're getting for their price. It's hard to convincingly argue they're not the best out there, or at least on-par with the best alternatives from competitors.

Then you have their other products like their iPhones, peripherals, smart speakers and headphones, which are IMO not undisputedly competitive from a functional/qualitative perspective, and mostly sell to people who choose them just because they are aspirational status symbols with high street-credibility. It's not hard to buy something functionally better, or with better specifications, at the same-or-less price, in those spaces.

Yeah but the biggest issue I have with any headphones and those hideous things you stick in your ears. None of them have separate controls for volume between the left and right side. I gave up years ago when my old off brand headphones died from the 1980's which had separate volume controls for each ear.

I have a 80% hearing loss in the left ear and cannot use air pods or the headphones as it confuses me when the stereo separation happens to music. I know I missed something. I just want separate controls of the volume to listen to music. Everybody talks the accessibility but then I bought this up for the past 10 years and you can guess it is like talking me on the left side with out my hearing aid.

I have problems hearing some high frequencies in my left ear, got tinnitus. There is an app on the App Store called Mimi Hearing Test App. Works with most Apple headphones. You do a test in a quiet room and it checks your hearing loss level. It saves the results as a audiogram, which you can select in the accessibility section of IOS to boost those frequencies that you have problems with. Give it a try!

I am hearing music the way I used to hear it when I was young! It's like glasses for your ears! Can't recommend it enough to anybody above 30.

You've described about 80% of the posts on MR. Incessant whining over things that are trivial. That's why that one member keeps copy/pasting his comment (and getting removed). The complaints on this site are crowding out actual enthusiasm and becoming an echo chamber of negativity.

No, I'm going to stick with other brands of headphones for now. Pretty happy with my Sony WH-1000XM4s, and maybe I'll explore others. Lack of USB-C is a real deal killer for me at this point.

My least liked Apple products I bought were the first gen Apple Watch, Smart Keyboard for the iPad Pro 9.7, iPhone 7, Magic Mouse, and AirPods Max.

Apple's continued and needless use of the proprietary Lightning connector is not trivial. It's a major inconvenience to not be able to charge your device because you grabbed the wrong cable (which looks nearly identical) in a rush, and your device uses a proprietary connector that is different from the standard connector used on every other device in your life. It's an inconvenience to have to buy and carry multiple charge cables when travelling when, in many cases, a single standard one would do.

This is user-hostile, it's endlessly irritating, and it needs to stop.

It could do with a minor refresh to bring it up to what the Airpods Pro 2 improved over it, hopefully if it's not till mid next year it's a more major overhaul then though

Probably good they are pushing this off.

I'd imagine it almost certainly means it'll be using USB-C

What I want is just individual control of the speaker on the left and right sides of the headphone. The balance slider does help a little but still does not make the volume higher on one side compared to the other. With a 80% hearing loss in my left ear it would be nice to have the volume adjustable to hear a song equal in my brain.
