Okay yeah this one is definitely smells like a honeypot rumor. I seriously doubt Apple would spend that much on AI when not even Microsoft spends that much on their AI servers. Hell Microsoft's AI spending hasn't even crossed a billion.
Microsoft is investing $10B in OpenAI, and just today announced they’ll be spending US$3.2B on AI and cloud capacities in Australia. And I’m sure those aren’t their only investments.

Why do people trust generative AI?
I asked ChatGPT that question; it lists (I've condensed the spew significantly): "Consistency, Objectivity, Efficiency, Reduction of Human Error, Adaptability, Continuous Learning, Accessibility, Creativity, and Predictive Abilities." You'll notice "Correctness" or "Accuracy" is not highlighted.

The shorter answer is: People aren't all that bright. But you already knew that.

Huh? Microsoft has spent billions over the years on AI. They spent $1 billion alone in 2019 on OpenAI; They've spent at least $13 billion to date on OpenAI.

When Microsoft reported their 4th quarter results this past July, they said their capital expenditures to build out their data centers for AI work had jumped to $10.7 billion from $7.8 billion during their 3rd quarter.

And it was just reported today that Microsoft will be spending over $3 billion to expand their AI and cloud computing abilities in Australia over the next two years.

What's happened to privcy nd doing AI on the phones?
You need orders of magnitude more GPU power, and also significantly more RAM, for something like ChatGPT, not to mention the power usage. It’s a very resource-hungry tech.

Yes, but that's also an opportunity perfectly suited for Apple... as they can optimize the training models to be smaller and more efficient to process. I've appreciated that Apple keeps their resources (RAM, etc.) lighter... as it forces developers to work harder to optimize their apps. As soon as you give developers massive amounts of headroom, they get lazy, fast.

Microsoft doesn't have an ecosystem lock compared to Apple.

Apple Music, TV, News, Maps, iMessage, iPhone, Mac, etc. All of those working together using one AI is worth spending on.
Microsoft have an ecosystem, but it's more focused in business and the enterprise. They already have CoPilot in every MS Office 365 application and some services, Windows 11, Dynamics 365, GitHub and even security services.

would Apple spend billions on hosting when they’ve been unable to increase their victims’ iCloud quota in decades?

5 GB for clients who have spent thousands of dollars in their products is not stingy, it’s botched up

Is this some kind of joke? MS spends way more for their AI server infrastructure. You're acting as if $4.5 billion is a lot for Apple to spend given their total user base. $4.5 billion for a company the size of Apple is table stakes.

That’s a good question. I feel strongly that the future of Apple’s AI security won’t be forcing everything to be on the phone, because they will fall hopelessly behind in quality of service, but Apple developing next-level encryption and other protections that will make taking advantage of cloud-based power a trustworthy approach.

But they do have an ecosystem lock though. Microsoft 365 is that lock. The seamless integration between OneDrive, your Office apps, Teams, Outlook, and even Windows so your projects are always with you.

Now you may say "But Office is on Mac" yes it there are some things Office can do on Windows that they can't on Mac, such as certain key plugins in Excel that cannot run on Mac due to the sandboxed nature of the OS.

Also forgot to mention that Office has generative AI in it that can make clipart for presentations.
