Shipments of Apple Silicon MacBooks will be cut in the first half of next year due to component shortages, a decline in working from home demand, and the introduction of a redesigned MacBook Air in the third quarter of 2022, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's latest investor note, seen by MacRumors.

From the note:
We forecast that the shipment of Apple Silicon processor-based MacBook models will be cut by approximately 15% in 1H22 and attribute it to three reasons: 1) component shortages, 2) structural demand change in the post- COVID-19 era, and 3) product transition between legacy and new models.
According to Kuo, the shortage of components relates primarily to a continuing lack of power management integrated circuits, for which delivery times currently extend as far out as 52 weeks.

This shortage will hit all PC brands, but is said to coincide with the capacity expansion of Unimicron, one of the main IC providers in Taiwan and the sole supplier for the Apple silicon ABF substrate. As a result, Unimicron is expected to aggressively secure non-Apple ABF substrate orders to cut risk.

MacBook shipments are also expected to be impacted by the change in demand structure in the post-COVID-19 era will, with the number of people working from home declining and purchasing power falling due to inflation.

Kuo believes a new redesigned MacBook Air powered by next-generation Apple Silicon will enter mass production in the early third quarter of 2022, making the second half of next year a product transition period that will have an impact on MacBook orders.

Apple is still expected to launch redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models before the end of this year, likely to be announced via a digital event in October or November.

The latest macOS Monterey beta references two new built-in display resolutions that likely correspond to the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. The new display resolutions are listed as "3456 x 2234 Retina" and "3024 x 1964 Retina," which would represent an increase in pixel density for a sharper image if the displays are the expected sizes.

These types of reports are always so myopic, because they focus on Apple in isolation.

In the big picture, Apple is the King Kong of component customers in the world, which is to say they get preferential treatment over all other customers, because every component manufacturer wants Apple as their customer.

So although Apple is also affected by component shortages, they are very likely to be the least impacted out of all the manufacturers out there.

I hope not. Apple products are so popular and the demand is so high always, epspecially at launches. If there are component shortages, this would mean that every new MacBook is going to come with a longer and longer waiting time before we can land our hands on one.

Nice way by Kuo to lower expectations and when Apple will deliver better than he expects the stock goes up 👍

Yes he is a clown trying to manipulate the share price promoting an over exaggerated fake supply bottleneck to justify Apples product line price increase hence higher stonks.

Apple are not a chinese OEM producing generic white goods e-waste to flood Walmart with here, Apple are at the top of the tree when its comes to being prioritized in the supply chain.

Yes there is a global component shortage but that Just means the big players get first priority and everybody else has to pound sand and go to the back of the queue, its not as if the A and B tier suppliers suddenly stopped producing parts...

Its ridiculous to even suggest that a vertically integrated multi trillion dollar company with double digit margins are waiting on a $5 power management integrated circuits for Taiwan..

Another so called component shortages, had no troubles getting a iPad and iPhone on launch day.

Didn’t apple supposedly stock up on chips before this component shortages hit.

They did. Apple's stock is beginning to run low. Although, I'm not so sure how much of the stock was power management chips as the article is stating that Apple is needing for these products.

Nintendo did the same thing with the Switch. Stocked up on Tegra and the related components to the current Switch models to keep stock flowing. If they would have released a new model with updated internals, the newer Switch could have been as scarce as the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Yeah sheeple, don't believe there is a component shortage just because every manufacturer across all industries has been reporting so for like a year. Supporting evidence: this one guy was not affected by it.

This is how I know global warming isn't real - some days I go outside and it's cold

Doesn't this happen every year? If I recall Apple lowers production output due to lower demand after the Christmas season. Some new products are then announced in March and the cycle repeats.

Haven't done this before, but I'm planning to be submitting my order right at the time when the new MBPs will be published to avoid queues. With an iPhone 12 mini, a 2020 iPad Air and the 14" MBP, it won't matter much to me personally even if the component shortage will then last for the next five years. 😅

I can't wait that long - if it's like that then I need to buy the 16/1tb m1 that's out today and that's bad as I need 32gb

wait what? why don't you get the M1X MBP that's going to be announced in a few weeks? It will definitely support 32 GB.

Let’s see, bootcamp and Windows taken away, EGPU support gone with use of a high end video card, discreet video and memory going away and now a system shortage. Sounds like the new MacBook Pro 16 is going to be great. You might as well get a Chromebook Linux with a high end AMD or a Intel chip and a PS5/Xbox X.
