I have an foldable smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy Fold 2. And I can tell you. After you get one you'll never want to go back to a regular phone, ever again. It's so nice to have. Also got it for cheap. Paid €699,- euro's for it.

I can see the crease in the middle of the screen even on this tiny thumbnail. No thanks, really. 😆

Apple has had Plenty of time to watch the competition to release their versions and learn from mistakes with the flex display modules, hinge points, ect. In Terms of offering something ‘different’, a a foldable display would be it. A lot can change between now and 2023, but this is another revolution point in the smart phone world era.

You're missing the point, just like Kuo: software. Apple's been increasingly differentiating the iPhone experience from the iPad experience, not fusing them.

Second: there's no use case for a folding phone other than giving good demo. Apple already has Continuity. None of the other manufacturers have an ecosystem. They don't have the same criteria, so they try to fit everything into one device.

Great pictures. Where are the sensors for Face ID though? 🤔
And I'm pretty sure, the ten or twenty whiny people, who STILL think the notch is worse than the anti christ wouldn't impact iPhone sales that much. 😆
The notch was and will never be an issue. The only apparent exception applies to the .00001% demographic on Macrumors.

I'm a certified Apple "Fan Boy" by most metrics and there's not many of their products I wouldn't buy but this, along with massive phablet sized phones are two hard passes for me. I can't imagine ever purchasing a folding phone even from Apple.

If normal, yet still high end phones (like the iPhone 12 Pro) provide better durability at a lower cost (relatively speaking) I'll stick with the current design.
I love Apple products, but they already sit at the maximum budget I can afford...
A foldable by Apple would cost a fortune and I'd 100% not be able to afford it.

I really have no desire to own a foldable device. The current format is more than satisfactory and I hope they reserve this for the Pro iPhones and leave the mid tier foldable-free thanks.

Have u guys actually used a foldable before bashing? For someone who has to read alot of documents, foldables are godsend. So much easier to read.

Samsung foldables are good hardware but they are limited because of Android. Apple will do it well because of iOS.

To be honest, I already start questioning if i need smartphone that much, what to speak to foldable one. I think more time it passes, this technology is not what I actually need.

I think the real value in a foldable phone isn't to allow a bigger screen with current form factors, but rather a significantly smaller form factor with current screen sizes.

E.g., a foldable 6.1" iPhone Pro would be ~2.8" x 2.9" (I've allowed a bit of extra space for the hinge). Assuming they can get it thin enough, that's a far more pocket-friendly size than any current smart phone.

I.e., something like the size of the smartphone from the Movie "Her":

Unfortunately, I expect the market will be going in the other direction.

Well, I guess it’s true then. This dumb thing is coming to market.

Another pointless product a vocal minority clamors for but will never put money on the table for - like the iPhone mini.

Foldable phones are the 3D HDTVs of this decade.

remember when every pundit predicted how every home would have a 3D tv by 2020, 😂How every movie would utilized 3D to bring in movie goers, how eventually we wouldn’t even need those glasses anymore

How did that turn out

also, if Samsung sells theirs for 2k, expect apple to charge 4K for theirs
I am sad 3D tvs are gone. I love the one I have, it was far superior in regular image to regular 1080p. I wish I could get an 8K 3D it would be amazing

The iPhone Mini sold well -in absolute numbers. However, it still missed the market. The average iPhone Mini buyer is not an enthusiast and the majority of them is therefore not willing to pay the price apple asks for that...
The mini is supposed to be more SE like. Apple could have put iPad like TouchID on the mini and saved money on the FaceID for example. Or used an LCD screen...

Maybe this is where the iPad mini is heading. Not an iPhone since it’s a risky endeavor for the main cash cow, but the iPad mini can be an experiment. Foldable iPad mini for a more compact stowing.
totally agree with this. Probably not going to be the main iPhone model but some kind of new category blurring the lines between iPhone and iPad. probably going to be much nicer than what samsung or other vendors do today (see smartwatches).
