Anyone who’s interested in this thing whatsoever is probably going to end up purchasing it online.
Or from a third-party retailer, if they even carry this thing.
Pretty much the same with all of their other very high price low volume products.
Pro Display XDR’s aren’t flying off the Apple store shelves
Actually many apple fans go to Apple retail stores to buy this type of thing for the complete Apple experience.

Just as your phone is part of your daily life in 2023 this device will be the mainstay by 2030 and phones will go away.
Except if you want something that is...
-Less Invasive
-Has Better Battery Life
-Easier to carry around
-Easier to make Applications on
-Easier on the eyes
-Better for audio listening
-Has something to type on
-Lighter

I see no one asking the most basic question which is: how is Apple going to properly demo something that really needs to be experienced in person? Sure they’ll have a bunch of snazzy videos and pictures. But what does 4K per eye actually look like in real life? I personally don’t want to go to an Apple Store and slap something on my face that hundreds of others wore on their oily foreheads before me.
Watch many, many reviews

As far as 4K per eye goes, you have to be darn close to pick out pixels on a 4K 65” TV. I doubt you'd be able to distinguish anything other than the image in a headset.
You have to be much less close than the headset panels will be. 4K isn’t bad, but it’s significantly less than what human eyes are capable of, and some of the resolution will be needed to compensate for VR optical effects.

Compare with how relatively little of the human field-of-view a 4K monitor takes up in normal viewing distance. People already dream of using VR to simulate such an office setup, but you’ll probably need more like 16K for that.

I would laugh so hard if wwdc goes by and they don’t announce this.

I’m interested to see the product though. It’s hard to imagine a VR set with a waist belt being useful for anything. But maybe they will blow it out of the park with some AR goggles and some insane apps.

Or maybe it’s a planned failure to get Tim Cookie to retire. This is a conspiracy site right?

And I wear glasses so I'm screwed anyway.

Just so you know, the stereoscopy provided by HMDs is not exactly the same as a scene in the real world. I no longer remember all the technical details, and probably didn't understand all of them fully in the first place, but the upshot is that many persons who wear glasses will find they do not need them in VR. The depth at which the image in the HMD is perceived is generally in a "mid" range (apps that measure IPD now generate a Near, Far, and VR IPD reports to accommodate exactly this.) Basically, if your mid-range is in focus, you will be OK with VR. If not, you can often add inserts to accommodate lenses, or you may be able to use contacts.

I maintain that Apple needs a much better name for this product. Their naming division has been on their back foot for a long time now. Ideally it needs a great acronym too, to generate buzz and make life easier.

I humbly submit that the:

Apple Stereoscopic Simulation Hat

has a nice ring to it. 🤔

(I jest; I'm a fan of VR and excited by advancements in the field.)

Iʼve read that Apple has invested over $40 billion dollars in VR & AR — the price of $3000 seems reasonable, it could have been higher.

Apple needs to put down the crack pipe if they think they are selling 7-10 million units in the 1st year!
Exactly. Sony couldn't even sell 300,000 units of the PSVR 2 in the first quarter and it's 1/5th the price. I say Apple sells 1 million units tops.

A tech product too ahead of its time forcibly pushed out by a non-technical CEO of Apple to demonstrate the bloated company infrastructure is still "cutting edge"… This thing has Newton MessagePad written all over it.

I am just wondering what Apple will demonstrate as the big use-case.
I cannot imagine Apple just announcing this piece of hardware, which is (should be) quicker / better / faster / etc. than the current comparable hardware.

Apple won't aim it at general consumers to start with, but will instead position it as a device for developers, content creators, and professionals. Apple expects to sell just one headset per day per retail store, and it has told suppliers that it expects sales of seven to 10 million units during the first year of availability.
with that target audience, you're expecting 7-10M units? doesn't make any sense at all

It's going to ride the Apple Hype Train all the way to Money Station.

This is DOA without a massive "killer app" to sell it. And those vendors will be monopolizing the stage.
