Perhaps they had one correct prediction in the past which gives them "credibility" like Jon Prosser.
I swear, this guy could predict Jobs rising out of the grave to take back his company, be right about it, and still have people use 3 dozen sets of “““””” around his name/credibility.

Don’t get me wrong, dude‘s had some absolute duds on his hands for sure, but that doesn’t undo all the things he got right!

Disagree with that. From what has been leaked from reliable sources Apple is aiming this as a consumer product. Maybe many years ago when this was still on the drawing board Apple thought people would be falling over themselves to buy a headset that in today's market has spectacularly failed with every other company that's tried.

For this to get any kind of traction and developer support it needs to sell in numbers that will make the developers massive investment pay off, or at least seem an attractive platform to make it worth their while.

Apple may have to sell the headsets at a loss at first just to get them out there, just like games console manufactures do and reap the rewards later. But Apple being Apple probably won't and will sell them at the rumoured $3000 price point. If so, it's dead on arrival.
It’s not in Apple’s makeup to sell anything at a loss.

See you learn something every day. I had no idea that the virtual reality market had been revived.
My reality is virtual enough as it is, I don’t need goggles.
This is going to make for some interesting reading on here though:)

Because of what it may do. You don’t have to be an Einstein to explain or understand how 12 cameras can work to realise depth without actually seeing.

As far as 4K per eye goes, you have to be darn close to pick out pixels on a 4K 65” TV. I doubt you'd be able to distinguish anything other than the image in a headset.

It’s not about what it looks like, it’s what it does. No one knew what "Retina display" was before they bought it.
You make a good point. I’ve just generally been underwhelmed by most AR/VR tech thus far. If this is anywhere near the price point that’s been speculated, I imagine that most folks (including myself) will wanna try it out first before buying. Anyways, it’s Apple’s problem to figure out.

Reminds me a lot of pre-iPad and pre-Apple Watch comments. "Why would anyone need a giant iPhone" and "I can see the time on my phone"

But that is ultimately the obstacle you face when trying to release a product that redefines the category. Neither the iPhone/iPad or Apple Watch were true winners in the first generation. The iPhone was too expensive and too limited compared to blackberry/windows mobile - but the user experience was a whole new level. The iPad had no killer app, and really still doesn't 10 years later, but it. still found its stride. The Apple Watch was a mess at launch, trying to be both a disposable consumer tech product and a luxury watch at the same time. The UX/apps were terrible, and it eventually grew into the fitness focused device as it exists today.

I think the headset will launch with the same breadth of experiences, with a main focus on fitness and productivity at home. Also I suspect a big focus will be on the AR aspects, still being to interact with people/things in the real world without having to take the thing off.
I’ve bought 3 iPads and I still don’t know what they’re for, other than watching videos and maybe as POS terminals and a few other niches. Everything else is better suited to doing on a Mac.

The original watch sucked exactly as much as I thought it would when it came out, but it became good over 3-4 iterations. However, the goggles won’t get better just because apps don’t take 5 minutes to load or by adding GPS. It was easy to see the watch use cases for health/workouts and even as a fashion accessory. The same isn’t true of the goggles.

I’m a big Apple fanboy, but I never buy 1st gen Apple tech. All these people that will be buying this headset are essentially continuing R&D for Apple, and paying to do it at that. I’m sure it will be amazing in a few years though.

Can just imagine iJustine physically wetting herself over it. Most of her videos read like an Apple checklist of things to say and fawn about in return for getting early access. She's just part of the marketing machine now. Same for the other usual YouTube suspects.
Content idea for the goggles.

Apple […] expects sales of seven to 10 million units during the first year of availability.

That seems a bit optimistic to me. Well, we’ll see.
If it is a headset and the price is over $1000 that’s complete delusion and insult optimistic forecasting. If it’s $3000 that’s acid trip level fantasy.

Get ready to see flailing crazy people at the Apple Store wearing this thing. Its gonna be so much fun! I am not gonna lie, I look forward to seeing it too, even though I have no intention to buy one. This is the delight of the surprise Apple is always talking about.
My body is ready for people to walk into me while they’re wearing the Apple headset,
I’ve been hitting the gym to get ready for it;)

Military and medical training. Some higher ed programs. Simulations. Down the road... porn of course.
Down the road these will change the world. And there needs to be a First generation. That was Google glass. This is apparently second big attempt.
But tech simply is not there. Maybe in 10-15 years.

Like trying to decipher what the hell Progozhin and Putin got going on…. Mixed messages out the wazoo over this device…

As a fan of the oculus… pretty sure I’ll be a buyer of this device.

7-10 million units in year one equals $21-30 BILLION dollars. That’s boggling.
Assuming the $3000 price is correct. I could obviously be wrong but I still think it will start under $2000. It’s possible this is another iPad pricing situation. Analysts expected the iPad to be $700-$1000 and it was $500, which shocked a lot of people.

There’s a chance Apple will eat margins for this to start and build them up over time or through services.

I’ve been saying that they will sell at least 10m units the first full year since the beginning — but other opinions say 200-300k units. I think it comes down to how many they can actually manufacture, and I anticipate heavy backorders.

I have a theory on this one:

Apple has been deliberately fueling skeptical press coverage of the headset to lower expectations so that what Apple does unveil, which I believe will be a step better than what people have been anticipating, will wow people in a good way. If expectations are sky high, it's nearly impossible for any company to deliver something that delivers at that high of a bar. Lower them and then give something good, you exceed.

Now my second theory is that the $3,000 price is inaccurate and has been floating out there and repeated every day because Apple can generate more buzz and excitement by coming in lower, even if it's a tiny bit lower. $2,499 would sound like a good deal, right? Even $2,799 just reads better than $2,999/$3,000.

So ... the product will exceed what's on the market, advance the headset category by several steps and undercut price expectations. Toss that all together and you have (maybe) a winning product for now.
Nothing over a $1000 will sound like a good deal no matter the rumors. The state of the art PSVR2 is $500.

I think they will be hoping it eventually ends up that way. Their number one customers for the Mac Pro are actually IT services and higher education; the sorts of creative companies you might imagine buying it don't bother.

Great, Apple’s biggest announcement since the Apple Watch ⌚️ and I won’t even be able to afford it at $3,000. Will probably be super buggy anyway. I’ll get the much evolved and cheaper one in 8 generations. 🕶️ 😎 🕶️
Yeah, just think, a few generations from now my great grand nephew will be able to afford these goggles
and the government will release all of the JFK assassination files ;)

Apple expects sales of 7 to 10 million in the first year of availability. Buah hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaaaa! 🤣 This is the funniest thing I've heard all year! If anyone would like to put a serious wager on this, please let me know. They will not even come close to that projection. What a joke this is!
