Am I the only one who doesn’t really think this is coming?

Love the idea that the VR / AR future won't just be left up to Facebook / MetaFace / MetaZuck to control. But its really hard to see the compelling use / buy case for VR (image shown) with a general consumer - and hence, this coming to market.

So no, you're not the only one really wondering if this will make it out the barn door (and whether it should make it out the barn door).

Ummm No. too Much Radiation around Your Head. Cancer & Many other health issues.
Tell me you understand the difference between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation?

I have never seen a peer reviewed study linking non-ionizing radiation to cancer.

I just built a real gaming rig with WIFI 6E on the motherboard along with Thunderbolt 4. So Apple gave up on expandable and gaming computers, So my next purchase will be a ASUS 6E gaming router to replace my 2 year old WIFI 6 router. Sorry Apple, you killed gaming, so it is going to be hard to capture game customers back after shutting things down like Bootcamp, Windows 11 support, shutting down Nvidia and not supporting EGPU hardware, and not aggressively taking all that money you have stock piled away and going after game developers like Microsoft has over the last year.

I sold 10 oculus quest 2 this weekend alone at Best Buy.
When has Apple ever pushed for serious gaming? The only non Apple electronics I use are gaming related, they've never been a serious player or cared to be.

Good for you, Oculus Quest 2 is a gimmick for kids. Tried it and after a couple of demos we were rather uninterested.

Totally agree that Apple missed a huge opportunity to make Mac and Apple TV into bona fide gaming platforms.

That being said, over the course of the same weekend, while you were selling 10 Oculuses (Oculi?) Apple was making several million dollars from in-app purchases on iOS.

Right because WiFi 5 can't handle 150mbps apparently. I must be imagining using 120Hz air link on my ac router nearly every day then.
Where does the 150mbps figure come from? And the article said "helps operate more stably..." - since Wifi is a shared resource, maybe the new Wifi standard is needed to assure a better experience in busy wifi environments.

This is because you never tried an oculus quest 2.
The Quest 2 is a fun toy but it doesn’t make for that convincing of a proof of concept of why VR is necessary. After playing with it I kind of wanted but I’m also willing to wait for the tech to get better.

Apple will perfect the technology with things like Super Retina (super high pixel density), Dolby Vision HDR, Dolby Atmos surround sound, and Super ProMotion (240+ Hz) displays.

Buy a quest, you will see the use case.

I played < than 50 hours in 3-4 years on my ps4, about the same with my Xbox 360 back in the days, and I bought a quest 2 for curiosity and it’s like magical.

In 2 seconds, you are in another world.
Not in a 75", 4K, Dolby atmos world, in a new 3D immersive world where you can play golf, ping pong, shoot zombies, etc.

I played more the quest 2 in a couple of months then all my previous consoles combined.

It’s not a gamer console, it’s an experience gadget. It’s powerful. Yet the graphical are still quite basic and the resolution average. I can’t imagine when it will be much better.

I make my friends played with it and after 2 of them bought one.

True than the graphic could be better, but i feel that the quest 2 is the first vr headset ready to mass market. It just works great.

Agreed that a true gamer will probably stay on his computer/console (hard to play vr for more than 1-2 hours), but as a casual gamer, I have much more fun with it than my previous ps4 or my switch.

Anyone else annoyed that articles ostensibly about AR keep showing and talking about headsets when headsets (at least the one with the Apple logo that's always shown) pretty much must be for VR use (opaque front).

Apple AR glasses definitely makes sense but this other VR headset seems kinda odd… I’m not really understanding where this high end VR headset will fit into the apple ecosystem. The rumors claim that high end gaming will be a focus but let’s face it, Apple is not a brand often associated with high end gaming… although the new MacBook Pros finally have the GPU grunt to play modern AAA games, it will still take years (if ever) for major game developers to consider Mac as a priority platform.

If this headset really will be as expensive as they say, Apple will need to show some big use case for it and if they plan to launch it next year, I just don’t see games being the big use case.

This will be interesting… As a software developer it’s even more interesting…

I hope they can adjust for a sleepy eye.
I cannot use binoculars or the Sony playstation VR.
My fingers and toes are crossed.

While Apple silicon seems to be overkill for iPhones the outstanding performance per watt would be a strong competitive advantage for MR headsets. It's easier for Apple to build a headset than for Meta or Sony to build a world class SOC.

Indeed. Apple's history is sprinkled with technology that are hints for upcoming products.

Apple's VR set is going to be a lot smaller than any VR headset we've seen because of Apple silicon's extraordinary energy efficiency and cool running chips. The AR glasses will be far more powerful than what competitors can offer because of the Apple Watch's by then nearly a decade of iterations and experience.

Now I know everyone (iJustine) will be orgasming over this upon release but I really cannot see a use for this in my life OR many other members of the GP. Especially when I can only assume it will require remortgaging your house to own.

If they really want to push the envelope support 802.11ad which is meant for items like vr

No... I don't let myself get annoyed over little stuff.

The killer app would be face recognition done in a private or consensual way. I hope that Apple gets the software right.

Don’t they have adapter for glasses?
My quest came with an adapter for it but not exactly sure if it’s working.

People have been wearing AirPods for going on 5 years now, Apple Watches for going on 7 years this April, and have been holding phones up to their faces for decades.
These worries are basically non-existent.
Also, these are far from the first tech devices that go over your face
