Apple is paying Qualcomm heaps of money 💰 It’s too much of a Monopoly for Qualcomm to be the only modem manufacturer in the US. Apple does not want to pay Qualcomm billions of dollars till 2030 when 6G arrives.
there are other options - The Sammy Exynos 5400 launched in the Pixel 9 and I am pretty sure Mediatek has a discrete modem still too.

I own both AAPL and QCOM - both excel at what they do. The QCOM modem is still the best out there and I'd much rather have an iPhone with the best modem in it vs a sub par one.

It's completely illogical. Apple's approach has been to do rigorous internal testing, not beta test stuff with the public. That's one of the reasons consumers pay the Apple premium. It's supposed to just work.

While I’m sure that Apple will do extensive testing of a new modem, there are always surprises when you deploy new technology into the field and put it in user’s hands against carrier networks around the globe. There will be some risk. It makes perfect sense for Apple to launch the modem on a new SE, a phone that is less critical to their business than the main iPhone and sells in much lower numbers.

It’s not beta testing but it is the 1.0 version of a new tech product.

It may make sense to launch somewhere other than the US for the first launch (India/China?). You'd expect to see the modem show up on the FCC's site at least 6 moths prior to shipping in phones and it need to have carrier approval before they can start showing up in our phones.

Nobody does hardware like Apple. After seeing how impressive their CPUs are, I expect them to develop great models. More efficiency, increasing battery life. As for speed, LTE is fast enough for a smartphone.

You already know Apple's modem won't perform as well as Qualcomm's. Remember how inferior the Intel modems that were in some of the iPhones?
That was then, this is now. Why don’t we wait and see instead of making declarative statements about a product none of us have ever used and is still at least six months away?

Well I would advise you to getting the iPhone 16 Pro version this year as the 16 lineup may be the final iPhone with a Qualcomm modem in it. This is not good news for your Qualcomm Stock

Apple has found a way to cut costs and they are going full throttle!

It’s not testing dude like R&D and not ready for use.

It’s putting hardware that matches the spec of the product. They did it with M1. They always start with entry level devices where performance is not a selling point.

Would be a bad idea given how much faster Huawei's 5G modem performs. Not to mention the 5G networks in China are faster due to 5G-A deployment. Makes sense to go with less developed 5G in U.S. first. But I would have expected Apple modems in iPad or even Watch first given the lower performance.

Tim isn't going to pass on the savings to end users. So this is only good news for shareholders, which Tim is one.
Do you think Samsung or Huawei, Google or any of the other major phone manufacturers would pass it on? Why should they especially when they have billions in development costs to recover. You should consider how much Apple spent to develop this component. It is public knowledge this has been in development for a long time and had a lot of very expensive setbacks. They are entitled to recover their costs.

BTW, Cook's job is to make money for the people that own the company whether they have one share or a million shares. If Cook makes shareholders more money by increasing margins through greater efficiency, he has done his job well.

The people who spend the most time complaining about Apple, Cook, etc. are not shareholders, yet they talk like they are owed something.

Well, I’d be wary of buying a new SE. It’ll be interesting to see if there are connectivity or speed issues with Apple’s modem.

That being said, the royalties Qualcomm extracts are absolutely outrageous. According to CNET (as reported here by Motley Fool), Apple was paying $7.50 royalty per iPhone in 2019 to Qualcomm. I’d like Apple to succeed just to see them be able to drop Qualcomm. Back in 2019 that was $1B in royalties.
You know, this makes me think. A billion dollars in royalties is a lot of money - and it could be more now. But then, Apple is getting something like $20 billion a year from Google to make its search engine the default option on Macs and iOS devices.

Perhaps the potential loss of that Google deal upon the order of a federal judge is among the reasons Apple is motivated to control more of its supply chain and costs. Not that dumping Qualcomm would be nearly enough to make up the difference. But, as in most household budgets, perhaps it’s all a zero-sum game.

Qualcomm is a creepy company and any ability for Apple to stop being shaken down by them is good for tech and the platform.
Running their company to make the most money they can for their shareholders and protecting their IP is creepy? Enforcing contract terms is creepy? Quite a stretch.

Shake down? Let me refresh your recall ... If anyone was trying to strong arm or shake down one of these two companies in their dealings with each other it was Apple. Apple thought they had them over a barrel and could just refuse to pay the contract price for Qualcomm modems. How did that work out for them? Not too well.

All iPhone 15 use Qualcomm X70. All iPhone 14 use Qualcomm X65. Apple doesn't sell modem performance unlike the CPU. iPhone 17 Slim isn't an entry level device.

Apple put M1 in MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini because those were the highest volume sellers, not because they were entry level. That's confidence.

Putting Apple Modem in SE and 1 of 4 of iPhone 17 models suggests they're testing.

I don't expect or want Tim to pass on the savings. I'm just explaining the truth before the fans come in saying how great it is. I don't enjoy being fleeced by apple.

I think the new Apple modem will stay iPhone SE 4 only. They may stay with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 for the iPhone 17 "Slim" model.

I suspect neither the SE4 nor Slim will have mmWave. The SE4 for cost reasons and the Slim for space reasons. Apple modem is slated for those devices because performance is less demanding.

Eh... not overly worried. My old phone is still good, and it seems QCOM is diversifying pretty well. I bounce back and forth between iPhone and Androids. Currenly Apple, but may head back to the other side for a while- the modem may move me that way anyway.

Good points all around (especially going ipad first). No matter though, we should expect to see them on the FCC site soon if there is any chance of a 2025 rollout. I feel like I've read this "any time now!" story for at least 3-4 years. I'll believe it when I see it at this point.

What are the benefits? If it finally produces less heat or as much heat as 4G then I'll be extremely happy.

Also does the 5G modem include 4G,3G and 2G?
Cheaper for Apple since they would no longer pay as much to qualcomm. If it is anything like Intel's modems it will be a dumpster fire. I will wait until Gen 2 before jumping on that ship. Modems aren't CPU's so will be interesting to see if apple makes something actually comparable to Qualcomm.

You can always go Windows or Android. You have options.

An individual's truth and the truth are frequently very different.

Speaking of mmWave, there seems to be little interest in mmWave in the USA now. Every Verizon is really downplaying mmWave except in places like sports stadiums.
