You do need more megapixels to go larger though, at some point. On an 82 inch TV, I think it’d help. I’m sure the sensor would help also, but Megapixels are data.
I believe you misunderstood. Even 4K resolution on most TVs today is just 8.3megapixel.

This is why I only upgrade my iPhone every 3 years.
Which is what Apple is expected anyway.
People seems to forget that whenever Apple release a new iPhone, they're not targeting the previous gen users. They are targeting those with 2 or more generation older iPhones. Even Jobs knew this with the S-cycle of old. Only the tech reviewers who "upgrade" yearly because they always get free review phones every year. So iPhone 13 might not be a huge upgrade from iPhone 12, but for iPhone XS or 8 users, it's quite and upgrade.

Just like cars. We don't expect a significant upgrade on cars on the yearly basis. :)

I think we should start calling this year's iPhone the iPhone 12s series and the 2022 iPhone the iPhone 13 series. Then if course iPhone 14 as the 2023 iPhone. No iPhone 13 this year lol.

Look, If you want a better camera, BUY a better CAMERA! You can get a Nikon or Canon for less than a tricked out iPhone Pro that is much more versatile and takes MUCH better pics than any iPhone made.
My Nikon, w/ 48MP takes images that are tack sharp at any magnification you wish. Heck, I have an old D2h w/ 4MP!!! that takes images better than the iPhone.

Or they might just skip over the 13, and go straight to the 14, if people are really that superstitious.

But that Nikon and Canon is not a phone and cannot fit inside your pocket... :D

I wonder about that as well. Let's not forget this is Apple we are talking about here and they tend to throw us curveballs and actually just go ahead and release the 13 next year.

Personal usage per lens:
Ultra Wide 5%
Wide 55%
Telephoto 40%
Do others actually use ultra wide lens a lot?

In photography, the ultra wide zoom lengths are my most used lens.

The ultra wide lens is the biggest and only reason I can think of why I would upgrade my present iPhone.

In photography, 90% of my photos are wide and mostly ultrawide.

I would not buy a phone that does not have an ultrawide lens.

It became a norm for people to pay 1000$+ year on year for what in reality is a very minor upgrade that uas no real impact on anything, except for making people feel better that they have the latest and greatest
You say this but almost all of the people I know upgrade after 2-3 years (or longer). All of these “minor” upgrades add up to a spectacular product when viewed on those longer timescales. For example, compare an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 12. Incredible progress.

I… did not realize the ultra-wide camera was fixed focus.

depth of field is quite broad so it's not really a problem.

The cameras need improvement in general. I have a 12 Pro Max. We need more megapixels or something. The pictures look great on the phone, but on a larger display, there are a lot of issues.

the cameras in smartphones are generally designed for viewing on the phone, if you want to print them bigger than 8x10 often you'll see the limitations easily. but they're still good cameras, especially in good light.

Looking forward to all the camera upgrades the iPhone can offer in the future.

I've been using iPhones as my main camera (coming from dSLRs and "mirrorless") for about 6-7 years. Upgrading from a 6+ to an X to a 12 has worked fine for me and the photographs I make. Next iPhone will probably be a 14 or 15 for me.

Foldable phones are a gimmick IMO. They are shoddy. If Samsung's foldables are anything to go by, Apple is better off staying out of that arena. I only like the biggest screen phones so I'd rather see them do a 6.9 Pro Max, flat screen no curved garbage. Folding glass and screens is unnatural and definitely prone to failure given enough time. No thanks. And as amazing as Apple is at innovation, I cannot see them making the foldable experience and build quality better.

Whether or not people are excited by the 13 series or not, I definitely don't think foldable phones are the future. I think seeing regular minor year over year improvements is the way of the future. Any more crazy "innovation" and you are going to end up with something weird and unpractical. I like the rectangular slab design, with squared off edges.

It reminds me of the curved TV fad that has already died way down. Everyone wanted a curved TV until they didn't.
My friend has had it for awhile and tbh, I think it's amazing.

Do you hold this same energy for people who pay that much or more for meaningless car upgrades, hobbies, sports that they’ll never be pro in, pets… etc? Does it impact your life? Just trying to figure out why it matters what others do with their money…

Looking forward to this.

Ultra Wide Lens is noticeably worse than the Primary Lens in quite a few scenarios, so it'll be nice to see it catch up a bit.

Don’t know why they didn’t put telephoto on regular phones. Do others actually use ultra wide lens a lot?
Agreed. The only reason I chose the 11 Pro over the 11 is the telephoto, which isn't too impressive in itself, but I use it a lot. Big zooms used to win over consumers when it came to cameras, so the only reasoning I can imagine here is an upsell to the Pro as I think the average consumer would use the tele far more than the wide. I have to remind myself to use the wide more to vary my photography, but I'm ultimately holding out for the rumored periscopic zoom Apple has supposedly been working on.

The high-end models of the upcoming iPhone 13 lineup, such as the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, will feature an upgraded ultra-wide camera with autofocus, compared to the current fixed focal ultra-wide camera on iPhone 12 models, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today in an investors note obtained by MacRumors.

Compared to the current fixed-focus lens on the ultra-wide camera on the iPhone 12 lineup, autofocus on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max will help deliver crisper and sharper images, regardless of the distance a specific subject is from the lens. Kuo has previously stated that the iPhone 13 will feature several other camera improvements, including improved low-light performance.

Looking more long-term, Kuo today shared additional information on the iPhone 14, destined for 2022. According to Kuo, while autofocus on the iPhone 13 ultra-wide camera will be limited to the high-end Pro models only, Apple plans to expand autofocus for the ultra-wide camera to all four models of the iPhone 14 lineup.

But wait ….

Kuo stated that the Mini would not exist past IPhone 13??

iPhone 12
iPhone 12 Pro
iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 12 mini

thats 4 models. Kuo is an analyst that can’t count? If so what is the newer iPhone model in 2022?! Hmmmm, the SE?!

I'm a bit sick of these tiny mini upgrades.

So what? iPhone 14 will get a tiny better autofocus one?

iPhone 15 then a bit higher sensor main camera.

iPhone 16 then the same but for ultra wide.

iPhone 17 same but for zoom...

You got to realize that not just the OS on macOS iOS etc. but also the hardware is that a very mature level. Currently stands any incremental changes or any big major changes involve fighting for minimal space that’s within our devices moreover is leveraging what can improve upon a specific hardware or software feature that will need replacing existing hardware that’s gonna be the biggest thing is consolidating of chips & chipsets.

I want them to go back to the wide + telephoto in the dual-lens models. I miss the flatter pictures from my iPhone 8 Plus vs. the wide and wider now. Anything even sort of close up looks distorted.
