I'd wished they'd included WiFi 6E this year, kind of optimistic of them to adopt WiFi 7 in 2023 given it will still be in draft until 2024, Apple usually doesn't adopt support for WiFi standards until they are out of draft.

Not sure if anyone else picked on this. But the 2023 date for Wi-Fi 7 suggests Apple is adopting their own Wi-Fi chip.

Apple currently buys from Broadcom. There is a 18-24 month lag time between introduction and Apple's adoption. This is why iPhone 13 and MBP 14/16 don't have 6E.

If the 2023 date is accurate, then it sounds like Apple is coming out guns blazing.

No they don't. The AirPort was cool for about a year, then it was outdated. Apple showed they never wanted to keep up with them. Others outpaced them. It wasn't a market they need to play in. I really don't think we'll see them get back into offering such.
Yes they do. And the AirPort was cool for way longer than a year. It was the most reliable router I've ever owned. That thing ran reliably for almost 10 years before I needed to replace it. Not because it stopped running or it wasn't fast enough - but because with the advent of HomeKit, all sorts of "hubs" for home devices started appearing that needed an ethernet connection on the router. Could've bought an ethernet switch, i suppose, but new wifi routers were about the same price.

Ever since the AirPort was abandoned, I've been hoping that Apple would get back into the game with a multi-function device - e.g. a HomePod or AppleTV streamer or....that had a wifi router built in. HomePods would have been a natural candidate for providing a mesh routing capability. Apple makes them HomeKit hubs, so they'd make a natural home for networking gear. Alas, Apple hasn't thought so - yet.

I’m all for this mixed reality headset but I think if apple is going to do it they need to let developers know soon. Or there’s gonna be a $2000+ headset with no content.

I don’t know about WiFi 7 but they are working on their own modem.

I actually just stopped using my airport this year! Loved that thing more than my current eero, but if I recall it doesn’t do the gigabit speed so here I am.

I agree that it would be nice if Apple did this but there have been exactly zero rumors of them doing any kind of router (stand alone or combined with some other device). And they rarely if ever get back into some business after exiting it.

Ready for Wifi 6e on iPhone as it's already in the home, but I can do without the AR headset.
What are people doing that they "need" WiFi6e on an iPhone? Just curious, because nothing I do (or really hear people complain about) requires much more than WiFi5 speed(let alone WiFi6 which isn't much different than 5).

Are internet providers providing the bandwidth to homes that take advantage of 6e?

Whelp you can’t change the past but the lack of it was probably the single most disappointing thing about this year’s iPhones. Apple broke with their long-held standard of being an industry leader in adopting new wireless technologies

Still rocking my (last gen) Airport Extreme with a couple wired Airport satellites....the best networking investment I ever made.

WiFi6e will be excellent for a crowded corporate environment.

But the devices will work almost as well with Wi-Fi 6.

The Wi-Fi 6E is only significantly beneficial over plain 6 when there is considerable spectrum crowding.
6 by itself is a solid improvement over previous versions of Wi-Fi.
6 is mediocre at best. Industry pulling the wool over the eyes of uneducated consumers with marketing speak.
6 has maybe a 10% speed bump over 5 if you are lucky. I dont know why you think that is anything to write home about.
And you don't have to take my vast experience and word for it “There was no throughput gain observed from AX vs. AC when using 5 GHz.” —smallnetbuilder

6E can double the bandwidth with reliable use of 160mhz channels.

Up until 2 years ago, I have always had Apple routers. Set up and management were stupid easy and they were rock solid. Then I moved into my current home and there were just too many dead spots for that AEBS to handle. Eventually, I upgraded from cable to fiber and from that AEBS to an Orib mesh scenario and it has been incredibly stable and cable is wicked fast. B ut the biggest win of all? Not having Comcast in my life. Truth.
I was in the same boat up until a year ago when we moved. Got fiber and changed to Orbi mesh when the Airport Extremes couldn't cover the house. It's been rock solid ever since. ?

Uhhh **** you didnt even make it through reading the headline?
Headsets, vr, high bandwidth and low latency.

AirDrop

You know that 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB storage option available on iPhone and iPad? People want to transfer those media files to another device.

And, no. Wi-Fi 6 is very different from Wi-Fi 5. At minimum, the top speed has doubled. This is especially noticeable when the range between devices is long.

I was wondering too if the modem they’re developing will have added wi-fi functionality.

I don’t know how these things work — is it difficult to develop a wi-fi chip like a modem? Do the two have to be separate? Does someone own all the patents on wi-fi technology?

Don't worry though.... WiFi 6 (our latest devices) is the same speed at WiFi 6E.... it's just that 6E uses a band that is less congested... which matters to people in apartments.... but even then... don't sweat it...I have 40 other wifi networks around me and my throughput is very fast... in any case, our current WiFi 6 devices will work perfectly with the new VR headset.
