Apple is facing quality control issues with the rear iPhone 14 camera lens, causing some lenses to crack due to a coating, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today on Twitter. The issue has resulted in Apple reallocating iPhone 14 camera orders to a different supplier, helping mitigate the impact on device shipments later this fall.

Kuo said the impact on iPhone 14 shipments will be minimal thanks to a new supplier stepping in and hopefully addressing the issue. iPhone 14 shipments are expected to be higher than the iPhone 13 with Samsung reportedly preparing 80 million iPhone 14 display shipments for the third quarter of this year.

Mass production of the iPhone 14 series, which will include the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max, is set to begin in August ahead of a launch in September. The iPhone 14 is expected to be a noteworthy upgrade on the higher-end models, which rumors suggest will feature a new pill-shaped cutout and hole to replace the notch, a 48MP rear camera, faster RAM, and an always-on display.

I hope this is an earlier issue...we are almost in August...so not much time to reset everything and place another coating

Dare I say, crack gate?

I'm sure they'll resolve the issue as they've been using sapphire covers and multi lens cameras for a while now.

EDIT: @Seanm87 beat me to it lol.

Sadly not real sapphire, if they had sapphire like on my 20 year old Tag 2000 series which still hasn't got one scratch on its face, the price would go way up.
Not real Sapphire, no. But neither my 6s and Xs Max have a single scratch on the camera lenses. Whatever they're using, it's durable.

Are there really that many jet-setting photographers that use their iPhones to capture a sunrise at the base of Mt. Everest that require a smartphone camera so massive that even the camera bump has camera bumps?

4 months ago I bought a 2020 iPhone SE (a deal too good to pass up). I think the camera is terrific. Are the cameras on the high end iPhones significantly better that people wouldn't buy an iPhone 14 that didn't have a better camera than the previous generation?

My 11 pro still going strong, even with iOS 16 beta. Thinking what will the 14 pro have that’s compelling enough to make me want to upgrade.

Doesn’t it just give you the warm fuzzies reading stuff like this?

I, for one, welcome our new mystery supplier overlords. I’d like to remind them that as a trusted Apple buyer, I can be very helpful convincing others that there won’t be any at all quality issues ever.

I'm not a jet setter (well, at least not very often).

Photography is a hobby for me, but I have noticed the iPhone is getting more and more use as my primary camera instead of my Canon DSLR. There are still some definite instances when I use the Canon and the myriad of lenses I have for it, but the iPhone is coming on pretty strong at this point!

I've been pretty impressed with some of the camera advances on phones! And yes, I do think the Pro version cameras are better for my purposes -- would not be needed for 'family and pet' photos, but for what I do as a hobby, yes, the cameras on the Pro versions are necessary.

Having said that, I do not update my iPhone every year -- I wait until I think the cameras have gotten enough improvements to justify my purchase.
