Who cares.

It's just an excuse for Apple to increase the size of the camera bump which is completely out of hand.

People who use their iPhone for more than making and taking phone calls.

Sounds like you should switch brands and find happiness not having to worry about people who care.

Sure but I think the point was that the app probably doesn’t work at great distances, and after a certain point when all you have is a distance scale on the lens, that’s all you can do anyway
Totally true on a rangefinder type camera. But on the phone cameras with computational photography the precise distance info can be used to good effect.

I am concerned with iPhone rumors in February. Are they going to break the cycle and go back to June announcements and July releases? Doubt it, but still.
They may simply be starting earlier this year in an attempt to preempt supply chain problems like they had (or still have) last year.

Good thought. Apple was no doubt hammered by their failure to produce critical pre-holiday product last year. It would make lots of sense to loosen up supply timing (i.e. making supply less efficient) to help avoid another Q4 sales catastrophe.

Oh yes, absolutely. The camera app does all sorts of things in the background that make the photos as great as they are, I was just more curious how the LiDAR sensor might complement use of a more traditional camera.

I was contemplating buying a 6x6 folding camera, though hesitant since many of which didn’t originally come with a rangefinder of any sort and aren’t particularly precise with focusing unless you bring measuring tape everywhere with you. Now that’s not so much of a necessity.

Free app works way better than the others. I like it for room scanning. Frankly a must have.
this app is great for point clouds

Lidar is so underrated.. i hope some day iphone will do detailed 3d scans for future XR. I would also happily trade zoom lens for an extra main lens for stereo images.

I get a lot of enjoyment out of apps that use the lidar, like 3D scanning apps. Not that it's good for scanning 3D models, but it's just fun to play with, and it uses the camera to figure out what colour each dot is to paint a texture over the scanned 3D model. An improved lidar would be very welcome.

Apple keeps continually improving every aspect of the iPhone (and their other product lines). It may not seem like much year-over-year, but over time, those improvements really add up.

This continuous improvement is the Apple modus operandi, and it's amazing how oblivious most Apple observes are to this fact.

It seems like they would benefit from having two LiDAR scanners at opposite ends of the phone to compare date and absolutely nail the cinematic cut out for video.

The only thing I care about is that they make the camera bump thicker. The one in the iPhone 14 Pro takes way too long to destroy my pocket and I've so far only had to have one pair of jeans repaired despite having had it since launch. Perhaps they could make the edges on the next one sharper? The 14 Pro also lays almost flat along the lower edge, if they made it just a little thicker we might not have to endure that!

I think that's because many people have little interest in improvements as that doesn't support the ongoing hackneyed narrative that Apple is out of touch, doomed to failure, etc.

This is actually a current problem with the iphone 14 pro, focus sucks balls and the camera settings is a completely different story. It takes a good 30 seconds for it to focus on my iphone and this is my second one I got replaced that still has the same issues.

I went from the 12 pro to the 14 pro and I can agree that the focus was instant on the 12, never had issues at all but the 14 is something else entirely.
It doesn’t take 30 seconds. If it did, they would replace it again. I don’t doubt your having a problem, but it is not 30 seconds. That’s an eternity when taking a photo. Video or it didn’t happen. Sorry, I heard you can’t believe everything you read on the internet.

The benefits of LiDAR on iPhone and iPad so far have been totally lost on me. The only real reason for the wide rollout for me has been a wider test for upcoming AR product lines and not much else.

If you cover the lidar scanner you can't take a nighttime portrait, it uses it for segmentation/depth. Also autofocus works faster with the lidar in dark scenes since it's harder to judge depth with just the camera.

Very true. A 15% performance improvement one year might seem humdrum, but over 4-5 years I'm quite surprised that I can now double my processer performance and triple my GPU performance from my XS Max, which still doesn't feel terribly slow at all (except odd areas which feel like more of a software not caring for older hardware thing, the processor should still be quite fast)

Yeah...cause that's so important and so many people use it.
Fortunately, just because you fail to grasp the relevance of some technology does not mean that Apple's engineers do not grasp the relevance of various new technologies tp Apple devices.

Image capture improvements every year have converted me to now buying a top-end model in September every year, and I will readily accept 4x the camera bump size if it further improves capture. My guess is that Apple wants to encourage those who upgrade every year to obtain maximum capture tech, and will let folks who whine about the bump simply choose not to buy at the top end.

Well said.

I think with all the LiDAR enabled iPhones apple could map the entire ground level and interior of all major cities in a few weeks. Just ask people to turn on an app and walk around and then use GPS and software to stitch it all together.
The use GPS and software to stitch it all together part would take some very serious computing resources...

Edit: CIA or SVR would probably happily fund the computing using funds collected from taxation - - and of course scrape all the individual user data while they were at it. <<Hmm, that is Google's exact business model...>>
