Nobody was talking about the Lidar scanner before this article was posted. Zzzzz…

Unless the reason for scarcity of such apps is the lack of demand. 3D mapping is really a niche domain at best.
Personal computers were niche and electronic calculations were niche domain until Dan Bricklin invented the spreadsheet and that killer app changed the world.

The benefits of LiDAR on iPhone and iPad so far have been totally lost on me. The only real reason for the wide rollout for me has been a wider test for upcoming AR product lines and not much else.
There are some utility to using LiDAR in phone lenses.

carpenters can use it for measurements,
People can use it to measure living spaces for furniture re-arrangements,
And others can use it to record proper form when working out (Bench Press, Incline Bemch Press, squats, bent over rows and especially proper form for deadlifts - without it u can severely damage your back!)

I got my 13 partially because of LiDAR, the resolution kinda sucks, but apps like Polycam come in handy for home projects, mapping a room and being able to measure out stuff, the night vision app is fun, but does show the range and resolution

This is just a iPhone 13 but

Be cool to have the resolution to 3D print something, or the range to really reach out beyond 15’ or so

This threads hilarious. A tech enthusiasts forum where people don't understand tech, but think they do. "Nobody uses it". "It's useless". "I've never used it".

If you've used your camera, you've used the LiDAR sensor.

Have this previously on iPhone 12 Pro and now on my 13PM. It does nothing. My sister has a regular 12 normal size. We took like 8 photos - photos are identical. Literally does nothing. No fancy focus or extra focus on the dark either. Nothing.

Not a very good analogy. The computers could not get popular for a long time because they were expensive and GUI was not invented yet. Smart phones have been around for almost 20 years now. All sorts of apps have been invented for them (many were just ported from other computer types). 3D mapping techniques have been around for a while by now but they remain in need by a narrow group of professions only.

Can you expand on this? How do your scans aid the motion tracking?
What app are you using?
Sure!

So I kinda simplified my comment a bit. I primarily use Nuke (or if the project calls for it, 3DEqualizer) for actual camera tracking. But whenever I do a VFX shot I'll use 3d Scanner App to scan the environment the in which the shot took place. So it doesn't directly aid the camera tracking, but it allows for easier set up of the 3D scene when I go to bring all the elements together. I can use the scan to figure out where things should be placed, mainly as reference. Sometimes if the scan is good enough I can also use it for casting indirect light onto 3D objects, giving it a bit more realism.

This is a very stripped down version of the surveying that large productions do. Obviously I get very excited for rumors of an upgraded LiDAR sensor in the hopes that it'll be faster/more accurate. That's always welcomed.

Free app works way better than the others. I like it for room scanning. Frankly a must have.
Thanks. I’ve been looking for a good app like this.

But why? Has literally anyone used the LiDAR Scanner apart from the first week they got the phone and wanted to try mapping their bedroom?

I thought it was supposed to help with autofocus but as far as I can tell autofocus at night is still just as bad

I have. I use it often. See my previous comment.

If you are regularly working on home improvement projects, even little things like mounting a tv, then being able to instantly and easily measure and find mid-points in any physical space within your phone is a pretty magical thing.
