I suspect it will not be 3 taptic engines, but they will remove the one and replace it with two in a perpendicular configuration. This will give them more flexibility to have them in different locations with one oriented horizontally and the other vertically, and/or place them in multiple areas of the phone to allow a stronger sensation.

Don't you need "real" buttons to turn on or force restart the device? Otherwise some part of the software needs to always work/run.
Nope, you just need a circuit for it. Both mechanical and solid state buttons are just switches, one closes a circuit with a transistor as a switch (more or less), the other with a mechanical switch.

Think of it like a light bulb in your home. A cable runs from the power source, to the light switch, to the bulb, and back to the power source. When the switch is closed, power can run through the circuit and power the bulb. A solid state switch is the same, except it replaces the mechanical switch with a chip.

Closer to portless & waterproof.

I just wanna easier way to do a DFU.
Even if they remove all the ports, Apple still won't be able to fully guarantee it is waterproof. Ports are just as easy to waterproof as the junction in any of the other parts, such as the screen. Basically, your iPhone is already water proof, throw it in a pool and it will be fine. All you achieve is removing the functionality of the ports.

If you ever have children, you will discover just how damn annoying it is to not have an audio jack in iPhones! What do you think, you can simply buy your kids AirPods and they won't break or lose them within a week? Good luck. Sure, there are adapters, but then they go and lose that, and off you go again to the Apple store to pay yet another obnoxious Apple Tax for a 50c part, and in the meantime, your kids either have no audio, or you have to listen to the horrendous cacophony of immature tastes that they play through their speakers. I curse little Timmy and his unfettered corporate greed on a regular basis.
