right, the environmentally friendly thing to do would be to throw all those perfectly working iPhone 12s in the trash where they belong.

Are you implying Apple stopped making iPhone 12 and are just selling their old stock? If so, they obviously overproduced, which takes us back to my original point.

What's the selling point? The physical buttons are already water resistant. Haptic buttons mean additional Taptic Engines which consume internal space.

Because: New! Different! Change!

Beavers want to build a new dam.
Marketers want to market something new.
Designers want to design something new.

Though I’d argue Touch Bar was a nice toe-dip toward and all-screen base of a future MacBook. People freaked. And here we are. ☺️
I like the Touch Bar, much better than the function keys, which is why I haven't upgraded MY m1 MacBook Pro 😊

Agreed! It seems like a gimmick to me more than anything. Reminds me of Touch Bar 💻.
Nothing wrong with the Touch Bar, better than function keys, although each to their own, it's especially useful for emojis and Apple should have an option for it, without charging extra.
As to the solid state buttons, a bit of a meh feature, not really bothered either way

To the people who say that they won't be buying the 15 Pro now because of this: What would you have done if this was never rumored?

I for one hate that Apple tries so hard to distinguish between a base and Pro model. (Just give us one model with ALL of the features.)

If the solid state buttons are no longer a thing, there’s gotta be something else substantial enough design wise that’s going to differentiate the pros from the standard 15 models seeing as they will be getting dynamic island too this year.
Hmmm, premium materials, faster USB, more RAM, better camera system, thinner bessels.....is that not enough?

Apple shipments down 40% in last quarter, according to IDC. "Apple can't innovate, my ass." - protected Apple fellow.

Thank God! Please Do Not Remove the Mute Button.
I think I've changed my mine on this 🙃

I was against changing the mute switch at first but then I realized I almost never use it and its always on silent.

If they made it multi gesture and assignable similar to the Action button I would be happy with that.

I think the Action button on the AWU should actually do that where it is solid state and you can assign it to do multiple actions with a single, double or triple press or even a long press vs short press.

Let me guess, solid state buttons not stable enough, they push themselves when there's no case, and the cases will either make them go crazy with pushes, or never detect any pushes. Also couldn't figure out how to reboot a malfunctioning phone

Bad idea to begin with. I wasn't even thinking of updating this time around..

The next-generation iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will no longer feature solid-state buttons due to "unresolved technical issues before mass production," according to the latest information shared by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo said iPhone 15 Pro models would be equipped with solid-state buttons back in October. He said two additional Taptic Engines inside the iPhone would provide haptic feedback to simulate the feeling of pressing the buttons, without them physically moving, similar to the Home button on the iPhone 7 or the Force Touch trackpad on newer MacBooks. However, in a Medium post today, he said the devices will have physical buttons after all.

"My latest survey indicates that due to unresolved technical issues before mass production, both high-end iPhone 15 Pro models (Pro & Pro Max) will abandon the closely-watched solid-state button design and revert to the traditional physical button design," wrote Kuo. It's unclear if a "traditional" design means there will be two volume buttons or if Apple will still adopt a single, elongated volume button, as was previously rumored.

Kuo said there is still time for Apple to modify the iPhone 15 Pro's design given the device remains in the EVT development stage. He believes the change will have "limited impact" on the mass production schedule and shipments for the Pro models.

The reversal was also reported by tech analysts Jeff Pu and Shelly Chou at Hong Kong-based investment firm Haitong International Securities.

"Based on our supply chain checks, we now expect iPhone 15 Pro series to move back to the current design of a physical button due to a more complex design," said Pu and Chou, in a research note obtained by MacRumors today. The analysts believe the solid-state button design has been delayed until the iPhone 16 series in 2024.

Kuo said this news is "unfavorable" for Cirrus Logic and AAC Technologies, two key suppliers of Taptic Engine-related components for iPhones.

Fantastic news!!! Solid state buttons was an ignorant idea to begin with and I have to wonder if it was as far along in development as everyone thought or if it was just a “wonder if this would work” kind of thing. The “unresolved technical issues” was the fact that it would not work, or at least not well. Forcing case makers to have the entire sides of the cases open so the solid state buttons could be physically touched would have been a moronic move, even for Apple.

I commented here simply saying “phew” however that comment was deleted and I was warned by the moderators for my post being “frivolous”

I felt that my sentiment was succinct and self-explanatory, however allow me to elaborate just in case anybody is still confused by what I meant:

Phew, I am glad this is no longer happening.
