What if this means that the 2022 ‘mini’ will actually be the 2022/23 SE? The main line iPhones will have a form factor update (hole punch or under screen FaceID), so it’ll be consistent for the 2022/3 SE to use the 2020/21 iPhone mini form factor (but with the 2022 SOC). By then the iPhone 6/7/8/SE2 design will be well and truly ready for the pasture. And the SE has always had the ‘last generation’ form factor with current gen internals.

Disappointing news. I wonder if it means that current (at that point) 5.4” iPhone will stick around in the lineup as the current option (as opposed to getting an upgrade like the others).
I think the current model will drop price by $150 to $549, and there will be one last new mini selling at $649, which is $50 down from current $699.

Have you met one person outside of an Apple fan website that asked for a smaller iPhone ?

Smaller than iPhone X? No one

Yes I have. I my field of work (television production and broadcasting) not that many people are happy with big phones. The ones that do seem to love the big sized phones usually have a compulsory desire to have the lastest and biggest gadgets anyway. Usually I see that with young interns (< 23 years of age). Eventually the ones that do stay in the bussiness and didn't move on to some office job, usually find out that being constantly on the move traveling light is key. And that means not carrying around big gadgets all the time.

I kept on using an older Nokia for years. The last one I used about 10 years straight. Small in size and exceptionally long battery time: 2 weeks! There's no iPhone to date that can top that with ease. It wasn't until the first iPhone SE was released I got an iPhone; good size (including a rugged case), powerful enough but not too expensive. And yes I think the latter is the most significant reason why the iPhone 12 mini isn't selling wel: the current price tag is just way too high. More than double I paid for my SE.
Unfortunately prices will not go down easy and many people have significantly less money to spend in these Corona years.

I agree. I loved my original SE. Wonderful sturdy build, no case required. I dropped it numerous times resulting in no damage whatsoever. Fit into jeans front pocket with room to spare. Last year I purchased the 2nd generation SE but for some reason it gave me eye strain so I gave it to my wife.

Maybe, but I don't really see it. I think it's far more likely that Apple will use the XR or 11 frame as a basis for the next SE.

Apple usually uses a longer-running, established and previously popular design and gives it new internals. In the case of the 2020 SE a slight optical overhaul as well.

Now don't get me wrong because an SE based on the Mini would be my phone, but it's currently not a device for the masses and the iPhone X-11 design language with its rounded edges is far more likely to meet the "last gen" requirement than the Mini. Plus the bigger size simply appeals to more people and they probably have a more-established supply chain at the larger size.

People equate SE with small and therefore the Mini seems logical, but the SE formula is updated old mass-appeal device, and I just think, to my own disappointment, that the Mini ain't it.

I think you’re right. Thanks for bursting my bubble :’(

Though on the other hand, it sounds like they might have an oversupply of 12 mini chassis!

I also think we need to keep in mind that while 6% sounds small, it’s 6% of a truly enormous number. The iPhone 12 mini outsells the Macintosh, and Mac sales are stronger than they have ever been! Nobody is talking about discontinuing the Mac for poor sales! Or maybe I shouldn’t be giving Apple ideas.

Agree. The rumor mill supports that scenario.

From: www.macrumors.com/guide/iphone-se-plus

"Display analyst Ross Young has suggested a new version of the ‌iPhone SE‌ could feature an ‌iPhone‌ 11-style design with a 6.1-inch display, ‌Touch ID‌, 5G support, and the same dual-camera setup first used in the ‌iPhone 11‌.

Kuo has said that Apple is working on an updated version of the ‌iPhone 11‌ with a 6-inch LCD, Face ID support, 5G, and an upgraded A-series chip, which could potentially be the rumored ‌iPhone SE‌ Plus. The ‌iPhone 11‌ upgrade will have a sub $600 price tag and could be sold alongside the ‌iPhone SE‌ as a low-cost option. This device is not expected until 2023, however."

Yes, it's unfortunate, but not unexpected.

On the plus side, this will give Apple the opportunity to come up with a new strategy for a small phone - perhaps one that decouples it from both the yearly flagship devices and the rarely updated SE. Something in between that cadence could be the sweet spot.

IMO the problem with the mini is the scaled display and the SE and the XR and the 11 models muddy the water.

I was not in the market for a new iPhone last year, but I'm not sure if I would have bought the mini just for the scaled display issue alone, even though I support the idea of a smaller phone.

IMO, 12 mini is the best iPhone since 5. I like form factor, flat edges, and It packed with all latest features same as 12, and cheaper! What not to love?
I will keep using mine until apple stops servicing it, and maybe will buy a spare one in green! Al last, Apple made a great phone, but people ruined the harmony. Phone should be phone-sized. For games use iPad.

You're walking down the sidewalk with your iPhone 12 in your hand. Can you confidently use it with one hand? How secure is your grip? Can you open Control Center with your thumb without dangerously shimmying and shifting the phone in your hand?
...what?

I can do all of this without problem with the 12 Pro Max.

The solution for Apple is simple to improve future iPhone mini sales: fix the battery life per charge issue. Maybe switching to the rumored "pouch" battery will mean longer usage time between charges?

And make the mini 6.1 inch screen size lol. As a 12 and 13 mini buyer most people don’t see the value of the mini when $100 buys a bigger screen phone.
