Who are these people claiming the mini isn’t selling as expected? It’s 6% of all iPhone sales. Apple only knows what percentage they expected. And apple knows how many sales they expected to have list if the mini wasn’t there. Lots of those 6% wouldn’t have bought anything if the mini wasn’t for sale. And we don’t know how many went to a store to buy a mini - and bought a bigger phone instead, also people who wouldn’t have come to the store if the mini wasn’t there.

So I doubt very much that there will be no small iPhone 13.

Kuo... are the analysts saying it isn't selling as expected. Kuo also said they predicted it would account for 20-25% of iPhone 12 sales, with the base 12 being 40-45% and the Pro's splitting the remainder evenly. The Pro in both sizes sold like crazy this cycle, and overall sales are up. None are selling poorly... they were wrong, now they're going bear market on it. It's not going anywhere.

I'm due to upgrade this year, so I think I'll get a Mini 13 if they're available. I had a 8+, then a XR and they're all far too big. The mini looks good, and I would have gotten the 2020 model, but 2020 wasn't great for me financially.

Sure, everything is a conspiracy. You keep thinking that. MacRumors will keep writing the news.
Like when they headlined the recent article on the top selling smartphones with a focus on the iPhone 12 mini not being near the tippy top? As opposed to say 9-5 Mac whose headline was about how 6 of the top 10 Smartphones were iPhones? Same source of information, drastically different take. MR ignored how well the iPhone was doing overall AND that while the 12 mini wasn’t the top selling iPhone, it beat out all but 2 Android models. That’s not “writing the news”, that’s some hardcore spin. And that’s on top of the numerous repeated stories about how “poorly” the iPhone 12 mini is doing, based not on actual sales numbers or information from Apple but rumors and speculation from analysts.

Pointing out MRs bizarre attitude/coverage of the 12 mini isn’t claiming a conspiracy, it’s simply noticing an obvious and rather unprofessional trend.

Apple just lost my business, no more iPhones for me. I was quite happy with their Apple Watch, it brought me back from Android, but after this news... my only options are screen sizes at minimum of 6 inches? Thats insane.

I don’t want 5 cameras on my phone, I dont want a heavy mini tablet in my pocket, I only care about compactness and battery life. Goodbye Apple, it’s a shame you cant see the vision in your own products and just abandon them after a year of bad sales.

Maybe one day they will release an Apple Watch that can actually make phone calls or texts without a jumbo iPhone requirement because iMessage doesn’t cut it.

Woah, calm down now. These are all just rumors; Apple hasn’t said anything about the future of “mini” phones. How about waiting to see what Apple does before jumping ship?

Does anyone make a smartphone that is a similar size to the iPhone 12 Mini?

Seems like Android phones have been at least 6" for a while now. Flagships and budget models.

You may be outta luck... an old fashioned flip-phone might be in your future...

I have my doubts, because given the physical size of the iPhone 11, it's too close to that of the current iPhone 12/12 Pro models. The next iPhone SE should be smaller than the regular iPhone models, and the iPhone 12 mini size is perfect.

I have a 12 Mini and I would like nothing more for the form factor to have a long life. Unfortunately, the SE doesn’t need to be smaller than the rest of the iPhone lineup to make a business case. It just needs to have less features at a lower pricepoint.

But even if the next SE were to take the Mini form factor, like the 5 form factor and soon the 8 form factor, that could very well be the end of the line if the (admittedly very early) rumor of no 14 Mini is accurate. At that point, I’d rather see the small iPhone become its own product line with a biannual (or even less frequent) release cadence similar to today’s iPad Mini and Mac Mini.

I would guess the current SE will eventually be called “iPhone Classic” with tiny updates and a price of maybe 299; and the current mini will be the new SE dropping faceID and adding a hole punch. I just want a LCD model...

There are some. The iPhone mini has a 5.4" screen, here are some Android options in the sub 6" range, some smaller than 5.4" even

Nokia 8 Siroco - 5.5" (closest)
Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact - 5"
Google Pixel 4a - 5.8"
Samsung Galaxy S10e - 5.8"
Palm Phone - 3.3" !!!

Overseas there are other options too, which you can sometimes get thanks to online shopping.

meh. i think apple will keep the mini. not the greatest seller, but still a huge number...i love my mini. had 11pro max prior to it and canʻt believe i ever lugged that thing around. other than getting used to the lower capacity battery, the mini has been better in every way for me...

I work as an iOS developer. Almost everyone one my team who uses iOS as their primary phone, uses a 12 mini.

And it's not because they can't afford a 12 pro max.

Interesting, I am a software dev and picked up the mini. Another member of my team almost bought the mini, but went for the 12 Pro for the camera. Before buying he was always trying my mini, so it was a tough choice.

You forgot the other one: they didn't bother reporting on the GizmoChina/Omdia report that had positive news for the Mini: Most Shipped Smartphones in 2020: iPhone 11, Galaxy A51, Redmi Note 9 Pro & more - Gizmochina

UGH

What a terrible time to release the mini, stores closed or limited interaction. People that haven't had the chance to hold a mini may not realize how AMAZING it is. I also hold my belief that it should have been a PRO model. Some users will ONLY get phones with the best camera(s).

iPhone 13 Pro mini
iPhone 13 Pro mini
iPhone 13 Pro mini

"Don't stop, believin..."

iPhone 13 mini will be released in september this year...rumor is about NEXT YEAR, so iPhone 14.

Someone here has understood that we are talking about iPhone 14 (2022 lineup) rumors?

iPhone 13 mini WILL BE RELEASED this september.

You’re being overdramatic. Of course apple will release a small iphone again. It will be like the iPad mini where it gets refreshed every 3-4 years. Apple knows there is a group of people that want small phones and want you to upgrade. It’s just not large enough to do it every year.

If you plan to keep your mini for a few years you’ll be fine.

Plus where else are you going to go? Android phones are even bigger.

Thanks for the list... although I'm not sure those phones are iPhone Mini "alternatives"

The Nokia and the Sony are 3 years old... and the Samsung Galaxy S10e is 2 years old.

The newest phone on that list is the Pixel 4a... but it's actually closer in size to the regular iPhone 12... (which people still claim is too big!)

And that Palm phone is a joke. 🤣

So yeah... you might have to explore further overseas. Though in all the years in the forums hearing people complain about "giant phablet" phones... there's not much talk of truly small phones that are modern and current.

Apple was pretty much the only player remaining in the "small" phone game! I mean... look at that little guy! So cute!

Meanwhile... everyone else has the motto "go big or go home!"

I'd say the opposite. There has been supply chain buzz that the mini was very low in consumer demand, yet folks on these forums (we don't represent the main consumer base) have been craving one for years.

As others have said, I think the SE will become the mini in 2022 and the mini moniker will go away.
You are confusing MR with MR forum members. MR has been pushing against the mini, and they can be happy now. The only ones here defending the mini have been the MR forum members, not the MR writers.

BTW, I don't get why so many people here think a 2023 "SE" model would not have FaceID...? Apple's latest FaceID generation is much (much!) better, convenient and reliable than TouchID ever was. Yes, on a 2023 iPhone, TouchID may be there suplementary (in the power button like on the iPad air). But believe me once you get used to FaceID you never want to go back to TouchID. I think added manufacturing cost are not the problem by 2023 anymore, unless the under-screen tech will be more expensive. But two years from now I still think it'll be pretty much standard, even on cheaper phones.

I know, right now in covid times with face masks it's not ideal in EVERY use case, you have to use your passcode a bit more (or have a watch), but the same argument can be made with TouchID in the winter with gloves, except that that inconvenience is returning EVERY year, while we all hope face masks are permanently gone next year.

Your mileage may vary, but for me there is a smaller overlap between situations where I want to unlock my phone and when I wear gloves during the winter compared to unlock and face mask. Shops, at work, on public transport etc I would rarely keep my gloves on, but I will definitely keep my mask on.

You are right though that it will very much depend on whether masks are here to stay. Right now FaceID is a secure but massively annoying system. We'll see later this year and next year whether that'll change.

Disappointing. I have a 7+ and it's fine so I don't need an upgrade but I'm a runner and I bought several pairs of shorts that will hold a 7+ but I would prefer a smaller and lighter phone. The vast majority of running shorts won't handle a large and heavy phone well. So I may have to upgrade. I suspect that the 12 mini will be around for sale after the 13s launch though.

Seems a bit ridiculous. 8th best selling smartphone isn't exactly bad. Something other companies dream about for their high end phones. The only ones selling better are sub $200 phones. Still beating the SE 2020.
