2018 iPhone models will not support the Apple Pencil because it does not offer a "good user experience," according to respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo

I don't think any analyst would be privy to that kind of inside information, anything else is just personal opinion.

Surely Apple pencil support would be welcomed in drawing apps, or where you need to sign things.

He also said no to larger screens.
He also disliked small tablets. Yet we have an iPad mini.

The mass market model being delayed would be a much bigger deal for Apple this year than the iPhone X being delayed last year. I would be very surprised if this happens.
Maybe they are trying to get more people to buy the more expensive models?

It’s a 326 ppi display. The actual display size is approx 6.06” diagonal). Given the 19.5:9 aspect ratio, the width is 2.54” and the height is 5.5”. The approx dims in pixels are:

2.54” x 326 ppi = 828 pixels
5.50” x 326 ppi = 1793 pixels

Yeah, but they’re not going to scale natively at that resolution because it would go against their new trend to scale elements slightly larger (X and rumoured next gen OLED models are ~153dpi@3x). The cheaper 6.1” iPhone is not going to have the working resolution of the 6.5” OLED model (significantly higher than the 5.8”).

The only reason this alleged resolution might occur is for production streamlining but considering these are using a new type of LCD to enable the notch design, I’d be inclined to say that’s unlikely to be a factor.

patiently waiting for under lcd panel fingerprint reader to be implemented

I've read somewhere that apple filed a patent regarding a new mechanism for under the screen fingerprint scanner, recently, so your wish might become true, but hardly for this year.

The problem then becomes, this $799 6.1" iPhone with 1080p and great battery life cannibalizing the $999 6.5" model.

Apple is doing a beautiful job of putting consumers on the fence. The 6.1" iPhone makes a number of people consider spending extra for the 6.5" model.

Apple is fragmenting its lineup too much now with their TouchID based models likely to remain this year. Fragmented options cannibalizes sales regardless of the newest options.

Two model sizes would be more easier to contend with because one for larger screens and one for regular sized screens. Especially since Apple won’t announce a SE2 anytime soon.

Well, the cheapest newest iPhone is rocking a 750p display and has been doing it for 4 years, even though you have to go to India to get such a low resolution in any other phone. I do see Apple being cheap and putting in some subpar resolution. Funny to see the horrible screen size fragmentation Apple manages to make, something that android was heavily criticized for from a developer perspective.

But that’s at 4.7” to be fair. I just rather get a 2017 X on clearance than get the gimped 6.1” now. I really want to stay with iPhone and not buy a Pixel 3.

Would a small size stylus work any differently than a full sized Apple pencil?
Would a small size stylus work on the iPad?
If both styluses use the same technology, do you want Apple to artificially restrict compatibility of full sized Apple pencil to iPads so as not to offend your personal feelings?
Just imagine using a giant full size Apple pencil on tiny (compared to iPad) iPhone screen.
it will look ridiculous and feel awkward.
your mindset is like saying,we have both iPad and iPhone why not just use iPad as a phone, and discontinue iPhone.
lol

If the iPhone 8 Plus , dropped to the iPhone 7 Plus price this year, as they will do traditionally, it will be prices at $669.

Which is inline with the projected price of iPhone 6.1" LCD.

So instead of getting a cheaper iPhone 8 Plus this year, your get the iPhone 6.1. For the same price you get:

5.5" 400PPI LCD vs 6.1" 326PPI MLCD. ( MLCD+ from LG )
A11 vs A12 -
Same 3GB Memory
Same 2x2 Antenna ( I don't know why some people are complaining, no other manufacture has has mass produced 4x4 antenna yet, they are only on a few flagship Android phones. )

Qualcomm / Intel modem Vs Newer Fully Intel Fabbed 14nm Modem ( Which I have high hopes for )

Touch ID vs Face ID 1.0 ( I seriously hope they give us FaceID 2.0 instead, 1.0 experience wasn't good enough for me )

Dual Camera Vs Single Camera ( I would love to see comparison on that )

Single Sim Vs Dual Sim.

Is that a good trade off? I don't know, we will have to see the Phone's display quality to judge. It is very hard for anyone to say feel internal component changes, like SoC and Modem. But everyone will notice the Display Difference. But from the Spec on paper., I think the $669 this year is a pretty good deal.

But if iPhone Xs Plus will be same price as last year's iPhone X at $999, I think I will defiantly go for the 6.5" screen instead.

is it just me or is it a relatively low resolution for a relatively big screen (seen as per 2018 standards). referring to the 6,1" iphone. Its even less than 8+ which even has a smaller screen.

Apple should quietly introduce support for the 3 of you guys who want to use it. It will be super cringy if they make a big deal about it though.

If history has taught us anything, it's that Sir Ive couldn't care less about how or where users store their accessories. Just look at the lack of integrated Pencil storage on the iPad.

Good point. Partly to blame I feel is the pen is optional and not an included accessory. At any rate, this does provide opportunity for innovative accessory makers, at consumer's expense of course.

It’ll have the same logical resolution as the 6.5”, 896x414. 2x assets.

Perhaps its a ploy to get fatter initial profit margins by forcing those who cannot wait to buy the nire expensive oled models. Personally I'm waiting for the new Mac mini and perhaps macbook air? I would never buy iPhones unless I can get micro SD support, and maybe a headphone jack and boot camp to Android haha.
I could only see Apple being successful at the above tactic of "forcing" iPhone X onto users if the iPhone X starts at $799. I can't see it starting any lower than $899. We'll see. I just hope they don't strip a lot of features out of the X in favor of the Plus variant to get the price down because that's what the $699 LCD model is for and I don't want to have to purchase a huge device to get nice features.

... but the 6.1-inch model, which has reportedly been plagued by production issues, will be available "slightly later due to its production schedule."
That's so predictable, it's not even funny. That's Apple we're talking about. Of course they are going to delay the cheaper model.

I would have dropped money for the top model if it had pencil support. My 8 Plus Red 256 will continue to serve me very well. I won’t buy another iPhone until it has pencil support. And for all the people asking what’s the point in the iPhone having pencil support, well that’s just dumb. Go ask the gobs of galaxy note users why they buy the Note. I’ll be getting a Note 9 this year instead of an iPhone and I’ll be doing some amazing digital artwork on it on the go.

so what's new? i haven't heard anything WOW that would make me upgrade from my current iPhone X

it's a gimmick, you can type faster than writing on the screen... and if you really wanted to draw or ink write something quickly you can with your finger. the pencil is just something that will easily be lost. People get the Note cause of the larger screen the pencil is just a marketing point

Are you just trolling or can’t you really see the difference in precision when writing or drawing with the tip of a pen compared to a big fat finger?

the real question is: which iPhone will they discontinue? will they discontinue the 8 and 8 plus?
they should discontinue iPhone 6s and 7 series and current iPhone X, because then i would be eligible for an iPhone 8 at work :) (currently rolling a 6, and reluctant to upgrade to a 7 at this stage due to your exact question about which one they would discontinue).

Judging by those specs, a 2017 X will be a better buy than the 2018 6.1” ?
Especially considering the likely price drop for the “old” X too.
There won’t be an “old” X sold for a lower price because Apple knows people would get “smart” if it was still available. It’s being discontinued and the iPhone 9 will be the “if you don’t like the inferior display we have something better for you” bait phone to get people closer to the real stars of the show.
