Power consumption, cost, product positioning - pick any of the three.

The 6.1" iPhone has a 2,700 mAh battery and is priced at $699.

1,792 x 828 is a good compromise between having a good enough Retina display, battery life, and cost.

I think Kuo is slightly off base with rumors because I can see a 1080p iPhone 6.1” with a larger battery than 2700 and still have a more attractive price than the X or X+.

Apple's upcoming 2018 iPhone models will not support the Apple Pencil because it does not offer a "good user experience," according to respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo

You can't make an assumption and base it as fact, you have to either validate it or invalidate it, with user testing. BIG, BIG fail Ming! Just proves what a crock of shyte that Ming is.

I'm sure but why would you want Apple Pencil support on an iPhone? Very few people would be using the Apple Pencil with their iPhone. It makes sense on an iPad, not iPhone.

Because the iPhone 6.5" is almost an iPad mini.

The problem then becomes, this $799 6.1" iPhone with 1080p and great battery life cannibalizing the $999 6.5" model.

Apple is doing a beautiful job of putting consumers on the fence. The 6.1" iPhone makes a number of people consider spending extra for the 6.5" model.

Adding a stylus to an iPhone when Steve specifically said "No" would be the ultimate snub to his legacy.
Not necessarily. You have to remember the context in which he said that. Steve was referring to a stylus as a primary input approach (ie small on-screen targets that are too small to accurately touch with fingers), whereas multitouch requires no stylus. The Apple Pencil is not the same implementation as a stylus. And there isn’t any indication that anyone in the industry thinks that late 90s and early 2000-style stylus input and interface elements are going to ever make a comeback on modern smartphones.

It’s Apple, they can get away with 30-100% higher price than the competition for pretty much every product.
They might be lcd displays, but Apple uses some of the best tech available.

True Tone, DCI-P3 wide color gamut

Everyone knows Apple isn’t about “specs” it’s a “budget” phone so why should it get the same oled tech as the more expensive X and X Plus. If customers want OLED, they’re going to have to cough up extra money for it

The lcd iPhones are very nice to look at. Yeah they’re not QHD, but they’re well done.

does anyone really give a **** about these rumors anymore after the IphoneX turned out to be such a piece of ****?
And why is it a pos?? Everyone I know that has one loves it.

Why? This makes no sense. Just because the Apple Pencil is supported for use, doesn’t mean you have to buy and use one.
Do we know that is why he was "thanking God?"

So the iPhone X and X Plus will have identical cameras? That seems surprising?

The only differentiators are resolution and battery?
I don't think it's surprising. What are you going to do, give it a triple camera on the back? Maybe next year, but the 5.8 one already has multiple camera's OIS, etc., just like the 8+ and X last year.

I bet it will be the same camera this year.

“Slightly delayed” assumes Kuo understands the Apple strategy.

We don’t know, but it’s likelu Apple wants the 6.1 to launch soon after, improving mid toward higher end phones at launch.

Why compare the 6.1" to the Plus when it's priced at $699?

It's not a Plus. If you want a Plus, that's the 6.5" model.

Because, at a year old, the current Plus model (and the 7 for that matter) will come down in price to meet that $699 and likely even surpass it. Sure this new 6.1" will have a better processor and Face ID but processor speeds are already fine for me and probably most users while Face ID is not that attractive to me either. What is attractive is a high quality screen that can, at the least, play 1080p content without downscaling, not to mention 3D Touch! That a phablet phone doesn't have 1080p in 2018 is quite laughable really. What are Kuo or Apple are smoking to think it'll more popular than both X models combined?

The mass market model being delayed would be a much bigger deal for Apple this year than the iPhone X being delayed last year. I would be very surprised if this happens.
Perhaps its a ploy to get fatter initial profit margins by forcing those who cannot wait to buy the nire expensive oled models. Personally I'm waiting for the new Mac mini and perhaps macbook air? I would never buy iPhones unless I can get micro SD support, and maybe a headphone jack and boot camp to Android haha.

In other words, Apple is having production difficulties with its Gen 1 6.1" LED iPhone, so avoid it (like every other first gen Apple product).
I doubt Apple has had much of any difficulties in production with their partners in many years. They churn these things out like clockwork and all the media does is wring their hands and speculate. How many times has an iPhone really been difficult to get? And how many years in a row has Apple sold over 200M phones? Lol...this is all part of the strategy.

Most would be probably admiring the screen too much to care about Apple pencil not existing.

IMO the only reason a pen is silly for the upcoming models is lack of a place to store one. The Note has it right in that it acts as pen storage, too. Granted, that could be left to the responsibility of case makers who can support an optional, not mandatory included, pen.
If history has taught us anything, it's that Sir Ive couldn't care less about how or where users store their accessories. Just look at the lack of integrated Pencil storage on the iPad.

The resolution for the 6.1” model doesn’t make sense. It is a multiple of the 6.5” model’s base resolution, which implies it would have more working resolution than the 5.8” OLED model. I’d say the two most likely possibilities for it are:

a) 2436x1125 - same res as the 5.8” at slightly lower density
b) 2338x1080 - renders at 2436x1125, like how the current Plus size iPhones run 2208x1242 assets on a 1920x1080 display

You could also chuck in 2160x998 (same logic as 2338x1080) as a wildcard. 1624x750 would be 2x the X’s base res but that would be lower than 326ppi making it the lowest pixel density on an iPhone since the 4, so that’s definitely not happening considering it’s still a $699 phone.

Well, the cheapest newest iPhone is rocking a 750p display and has been doing it for 4 years, even though you have to go to India to get such a low resolution in any other phone. I do see Apple being cheap and putting in some subpar resolution. Funny to see the horrible screen size fragmentation Apple manages to make, something that android was heavily criticized for from a developer perspective.

It’s a 326 ppi display. The actual display size is approx 6.06” diagonal). Given the 19.5:9 aspect ratio, the width is 2.54” and the height is 5.5”. The approx dims in pixels are:

2.54” x 326 ppi = 828 pixels
5.50” x 326 ppi = 1793 pixels

This.
It doesn't make sense to delay the "base" model for a few weeks, we read about that kind of stuff every year and eventually they're proven wrong except for last year, but they had iPhone 8 and 8+ right on schedule.
