Most customers will probably just notice it's $250 cheaper and won't really care about OLED and the…

For a lot of us the difference is $350-450. The XS/Max is only available in 64, 256, 512 sizes. Many of us need more than 64 but 256 is overkill. The XR is available in 128 which is perfect for my needs. So the XS/Max is $1149/1249 for the 256 model. The XR is $799 for the 128 model which is $350/450 more depending on which XS you choose. I don't currently need a new phone, my 6s+ is still going strong, but if I did the XR is the only one I would look at. Lower screen res or not.

"Demand for the iPhone XR will be higher than demand for the iPhone 8 last year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo"
Duuh ,I don't need Ming Chi Kuo to tell me that, of course there will be higher demand, the iPhone 8 was a phone with the same design for 4 years and the iPhone XR is a new design.
People waited for this since iPhone 6s, their thirsty for something "new".

Well, many folks on MacRumors forum thinks XR is "doomed, doomed I tell ya" due to low resolution screen (ironically enough, only the "green" pixels on XS and XS Max have higher resolution).
This is true, but it is also more in line with how our eyes work. Our eyes effectively see green in higher resolution than other colors.

I’m planning to buy one unlocked if I can get AT&T to use the eSIM so I can use other carriers when I travel with the physical sim.

Have to play with it to be sure, but this will likely be my next phone ... as soon as I can get one without paying a tithe to a major telecom co.

Buh buh but the resolution and PPI!

Can't wait to get this next week.

If I was able to upgrade now from the 8, I would be getting the blue XR. But! I had to replace my phone already this year because it was lost so...next year's model! Even better.

Great phone, but I wonder if a few carriers will still have some stock of the original X for the same price? That would potentially be a better buy.

Hoping the sales of these are insane and Apple rethink their pricing. But I have a feeling this will work out perfectly for them. (so I bought more stock)

What makes you think most people won’t see the difference With the cameras? But I could be wrong and they won’t notice the entirely different camera bump on the XS to the XR?....
and I doubt the screen will be that much different, certainly it’ll be comparable to other iPhone LCD screens.

A percentage of people would notice. A much larger percentage won’t care as long as the picture is in the quality range from good to very good. Same thing as with audio quality, once you reach a “good enough” point most people quit caring.

I'm curious how they are going to advertise this phone. It deserves a big campaign. And it needs one since it is being released a decent amount of time after the announcement. But advertising your "second best" product is tricky.
They’ll probably do a commercial fanning out all the colors and shuffling the phones like cards to show off that for the first time in years they made a lot of bright colors. There’s a lot of fun and excitement for them to capitalize on with just the array of colors alone. These phones are really eye catching and resurrect some of the fun of the iPods. The black one is stealthy enough to escape being cute and can still hold the place of a good all-arounder.

Then they will likely show off how you can do portrait mode with the single camera without actually emphasizing that it’s a single lens. They’ll just show off what it can do.

The price difference actually isn’t huge ($750 and $999 are both “about $1000” in my books) and most people pay monthly, so the difference is tiny. Given that, I’ll be surprised if the XR is a clear winner over the XS/Max. The low resolution, low pixel density, lack of OLED, lack of 3D Touch and no telephoto lens all add up. It also appears to be thicker and with bigger bezels. Nah.

That's like saying $250 = $0. You can almost buy an Apple Watch with $250.

This. I’m coming from a 128gb 7 plus at about 40% capacity. $350/450 is what I’d be looking at. The OLEDs are quite nice but I never look at a plus screen and think that it is terrible and I need to spend upwards of $450 more to upgrade it. As for the other factors, I don’t use portrait mode very often and 3D Touch isn’t a dealbreaker with the basic functions replicated with a long press.

They have been claiming that Apple is doomed for every conceivable reason since time immemorial.

I believe Apple’s next quarterly earnings report is on 1 Nov. Anyone cares to bet against Apple this time round?

Tomorrow?

That will be interesting. I wonder if we will get some indications about how well the new iPhones are selling. I think they were only on sale for a few weeks in the last quarter.

Sorry, seems it is 1 Nov actually. No idea why I thought it was this week.

Like it. I've got the XS, but I'm into this stuff. The XR is pretty much the phone I would recommend most folks to buy unless they really want the better camera in the XS or they want a different size (I personally want smaller phones that are easier to use with one hand.)

I think it’s a valid criticism to say the XR won’t do 1080.

Your criticism is myopic.

Only the green pixel on OLED smartphones have significantly higher pixel density than iPhone XS. Red and blue pixels are roughly the same, worse in the case of XS and XS Max.

More valid criticism would be that iPhone XR is still using LCD when all high priced Android phones have switched to OLED.

Yeah I think you are pretty typical of what many people are doing. You still get a nice shiny new toy without dropping a grand. I think for most people it makes the most sense.

The devices I use the most need the better screen, I use my iPhone but not nearly as much as my iPad or MacBook Pro, the XR just made more sense to me, besides, I wanted the Product Red phone :)

What do you mean by “do”?
My apologies.
The Iphone XR’s display will not support 1080p full HD video.

1080p (1920×1080 px; also known as Full HDor FHD and BT.709) is a set of HDTV high-definition video modes characterized by 1,920 pixels displayed across the screen horizontally and 1,080 pixels down the screen vertically;[1]the p stands for progressive scan, i.e. non-interlaced. The term usually assumes a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, implying a resolution of 2.1 megapixels. It is often marketed as full HD, to contrast 1080p with 720p resolution screens.

No, it supports 1080p fine, it just doesn’t display it at its native resolution. Instead it’s downsampled, just like iPhone 6/6S/7/8, to display it in the 828 vertical lines of resolution that are available. The 6/7/8 models have even lower resolution (1334x750) than the XR’s 1792x828.

Of course 1440 and 4K content must also be downsampled to display on a phone with a 1080 display, just as they will with the XR.
