I hope M2 and M2X will be released (closer) together. Buying an M1X device becomes less attractive when M2 is just around the corner.
read the article...the M2 is almost a year away, is not like the M2 is coming in spring of 2022. M1x it should come next month, presentation is rumoured for October 12th
And again, the biggest jump you will feel is going from intel mac to apple silicon mac...so, dont expect the same difference between M1x -> M2x and so on

Perfect pacing IMHO:
- current Pro are need up an update
- the low-end option MBA should easily be able to sell strongly for four more quaters.

The current MBA design is beautiful. Dont see the point of redesigning something, when it is not needed. Some some tweeks here and there, a lot of improvements underneath is all that MBA needs to be the best notebook in its class.
redesigns are done more so for consistency as well being the obvious reason. Now that the iMac came with a redesign and a new color selection, it makes sense for them to change it for the air as well so there is consistency across the board. Keep in mind that the air while it did get a redesign back in 2018, its still using that design of the mbp from 2016. The current mbp design has been going on for at this point 5 years, which is enough time for it to be refreshed in some capacity. I'm excited for this redesign mainly because I feel like its been quite awhile since that mbp 2016 design has been going on, its nice to see something new.

But I am not student or teacher. So this will not work, or will it?

It's clear that Apple no longer wants professionals to buy non pro devices. First the iMac now the Macbooks.

After using my iPhone 13 pro max with ProMotion, I won’t be buying another Mac until it gets ProMotion.

No more excuses apple, these Macs now have the chipsets to easily support ProMotion. Make it happen.

👉💻🖥

They’ll do mini-LED as this display update, and then they’ll wait another 5 years to use ProMotion as the next display update.

I like the mockup picture. I'm ready for a more fun looking notebook. The world of labor has improved a lot for us mules in the past 200 years, but there still was an air of horror and unpleasant seriousness in product design.

Wonder what the delay is. Maybe mini LED cost isn't dropping as fast as expected.

Good thing I bought an MBA recently for $740 using the edu AirPods loophole.

what's the loophole and how do you do it? I'm guessing you remove the airpods or something but you can keep the discount? edit... nevermind, saw you response. I was tempted to get a M1 MBA with the current promo, but I think I'll still either wait for the 14" MBP or the 2022 Air.

So if this rumor is true, looks like Apple will fall into a tick/tock pattern with their Mac chips? 2020 M1, 2021 M1X, 2022 M2, 2023 M2X, etc.

I wonder if that was the plan all along or if the chip shortage forced them?

If you really need a “pro” Mac - to succeed a 16” MBP, 5k iMac, higher-end Mini - you need an M1X, not an M2, unless you’re prepared to wait another year or more for the M2X.

The M1X is rumoured to have twice the CPU and GPU cores of the M1 - for pro apps optimised for multi threading and GPU-based computing that could be far more significant than the incremental improvement in core power/efficiency from the M1 to the M2. The M2 will be designed for ultraportables and tablets, with power consumption taking priority over speed and may well have similar restrictions on max RAM, external displays and I/O to the M1 - with those improvements reserved for the X-series chips. The M1 specs are perfectly adequate for Airs and iPads in that respect.

Do you need to be a student for that?

Yea, I think it will become more clear over time, but the base numbers (1, 2, 3) will be the consumer line and the X versions are Pro. At least that's what it looks like. The whole M1X name is a rumor as far as I know, so maybe Apple will call it something different.
