... Imagine my surprise when I was informed that they had already sold their stock and was offered iPhone 8 models instead. ... I agree with the article that Apple sales are in line with their expectations.
Shhh. Your facts don't fit with the MRForums doomsayers narrative, so, clearly, your facts are wrong. Get with the program!

Not really interested in a phone that may shatter glass in front and back. It was a bad decision on the 4 and now on the 8.

In China, most people are holding off for X. No doubt, X will be sold out for months here. 8 and 8+ is nowhere in sight.

Even with a case, such as otterbox?

Even single person I know bought an 8 Plus or an 8. We all have the same opinion when it comes to the X. No home button...then no purchase. I can’t buy something that has virtually the same specs just because it looks cool and because I need to look like a bada$$. I’m good with my 8 Plus.
That's interesting because if what Craig said about face-id as a replacement to touch ID (if it's well-receptive), then this must be your last iphone then.

Damnit, you’re giving me ideas, I almost pulled the trigger on the 8+ even though I’ll be pre-ordering the X, now my wallet is feeling itchy!!!

Hahaha. Don’t the looks fool you on the 8/8+
I actually know a few people who are getting “both”. Assuming you get free upgrades whenever you want or plan to sell the 8?

I don’t know yet. I bought it sim free without a plan straight from Apple. I plan to buy a iPhone X 256GB pay in full with Verizon so it can be unlocked. I might sell my 8 or keep it as back up or gift it to a family member, I haven’t really decided yet. Just enjoying it at the moment.

Because hexacore CPUs that rival Intel laptops, intelligent photo capture with facial landmarking and machine learning, AR and 1000 nit True-tone screens are not important, it's the bezel size that really counts.
You missed the point. What I'm saying is that overall design and Form factor counts.

Good design matters, and the iPhone 8 design, now 3 years old that takes elements from a 10 year old, is outdated. No excuse for that

Translation: you personally don't like it.

Apple doesn't change design for the sake of change - they change it when they have a good reason, like with iPhone X. This is the classic, iconic design that stands the test of time. If you prefer something else, go buy it, by all means.

But it's still beautiful, iconic, classic - and it's in one of the best (and for a lot of people - THE best) phone on the market at the moment. How's that for an excuse?

I'd pay $300 extra for Apple's holographic screen, but I would probably wait for the second gen iPhone XIX, since everyone knows the first gen never works properly.

PS -- Awesome comment.

Holographic screen? Guess what? RED camera has a phone that does it. It's here now. Where's Apple's hologram? Oops. Not here now.

I think a lot of people are going to be that way who are iPhone users especially here in the states when you can pay for it on your bill interest free and trade in next year to the newer model. It's no longer a $1000 phone but a $20 more a month phone.

It's really more than $40 a month for that phone.

Oh you mean like they did with the headphone jack? Or the notch design? Or adding glass to the back when their own wireless charging pod is not even out yet? Talk about bad timing.

I hate when people say they don't want to buy the first release of a phone because it always has problems. First off, based on my own experience, I have never had an issue that was so horrible it made the phone unusable. Yes, I've had small malfunctions but nothing Apple didn't repair or replace. Which brings me to my second point, the phone is under warranty for a year. Just doesn't make sense to me...

And the Motorola atrix had a fingerprint sensor before Apple did.

Fast forward to today. Do people remember the company who implemented the fingerprint sensor first, or the company who did it best and in the process, mainstreamed the technology?

As it stands, nobody even knows how exactly this holographic tech is supposed to work, much less if it even works properly, and people are already rushing to claim that Apple is doomed just because it hasn’t done X, where X is the latest tech buzzword in the industry?

Third party wireless chargers still work with the iPhone 8.

The notch strikes me as another camera bump saga. Haters gonna hate, and their criticism is going to age very poorly.

And the headphone jack? Enjoying my Airpods and I don’t see myself going back to wired headphones ever.

The headphone jack was removed to push people down a wireless path, it's not 2008 anymore. Yes the lack of a headphone jack can be an inconvenience at times, but were far enough into wireless technology that we can get by without it, allowing more internal space for new features. The notch is a necessary component needed to allow facial recognition to work properly. Wireless charging has been available for years, there are numerous third party accessories consumers can purchase. Just because Apple's proprietary solution isn't in stores yet doesn't make it a useless feature.

Please explain to me which of these changes was made on a whim, and not with the natural progression of mobile technology in mind...

Same and SAME! As more people become accustomed to the notch, more people are going to be comfortable with it. And those who don't, well after a while they're gonna sound like the vegan who sh*ts on everyone for eating chicken. Just shut up already.

I bought AirPods back in February and haven't used a pair of regular headphones since. They just work way too well.

Reports of lower than expected first weekend iPhone 8 sales are "overdone," KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told investors in a new note sent out this evening. Kuo says that based on estimates of iPhone 8 production and research data from Localytics, the market is "excessively negative" on iPhone 8 sales.

According to Kuo, first weekend sales of the iPhone 8 were not weak, but stable. He believes Apple is expecting a 50/50 demand split between iPhone X and iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, and sales of the latter two devices are on target when taking that into consideration.

Recent data from Localytics found that the iPhone 8 Plus is more popular than the iPhone 8, which Kuo says aligns with KGI's production-side observations. While sales were lower overall, the iPhone 8 Plus saw the strongest first weekend adoption rate of any Plus-sized iPhone to date.Kuo believes the market is negative on first weekend iPhone 8 sales because market analysts rely overmuch on observed sales momentum in unlocked/SIM-free channels such as the Apple Store, while overlooking sales momentum within carrier channels.

iPhone 8 lines outside of Apple retail stores were indeed shorter this year than in past years, says Kuo, but there was stable first weekend demand within carrier channels. Most people who camp outside of Apple Stores to purchase devices are "presumably hardcore Apple fans and heavy users" who are waiting for the iPhone X, which he says explains the perceived lack of demand.

Though Kuo believes first weekend sales of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are on track, he warns that iPhone 8 and 8 Plus shipment momentum may not be stable and needs to be closely monitored as the launch of the iPhone X approaches.

Ok, well I wont buy another apple phone/product until they can actually come up with something to "wow" me. I was a great fan of apple. Mac's, MacBook Pro, IPad, TV, Airport, iPhones, now that they have no new design, nothing to say we have the "leading edge", they over charge on product and then the Apple Care, their iOS screws up all the time, and their customer service tells me "ok bye....we will miss you though" does not me NOT buying a product drive down their "value" in stock a little further?

I was indeed SHOCKED when I bought the S8+ to see how easy, beyond flawless, to what apple has EVER been, not to mention the phone is STUNNING! Mr. Cook, **** you and your retarded ********. I will miss you though.

People too easily confuse the implementation of a feature which requires an advancement in technology with progress. Wireless audio is not inherently superior to a wired headset. It is only superior if you find wire to be an encumbrance. For ubiquitous connectivity to many superior sounding analog wired headphones it is a step backwards. It is a waste of energy in terms of power consumed by transmitting and receiving devices, and in the production of new devices to accommodate the new standard. It creates waste in the inevitable disposal of power sources in headphones, as well as the headphones themselves which do not lend themselves to simple repair.

"It's really more than $40 a month for that phone."

THAT'S THE KEY THING BEING MISSED! A good chunk of iPhone sales is to carriers that bundle them with plans. In an environment of renewed pricing competition, is the iPhone X going to garner that much in sales?

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-new-sticker-shock-plunging-cellphone-bills-1498232910

The problem is people don't realize that iPhone X will be about $50 a month ON TOP of the phone plan including tax and insurance. That goes nearly $100 or more a month. I'm paying close to $60 a month flat for the SE under unlimited data and text for the deaf and hard of hearing. Soon, when I pay off the phone in several months, it'll drop big time down to $45 a month FLAT.

Well, if you don't like Johnny Ive's design philosophy - you don't like Apple. So you're in the wrong place.

Either way, I stand by my claim that bezels and form factors should change only when there's a good reason (like those on iPhone X). Change for the sake of change is not good design.

Actually, the phones have been fine. I've had the 4, 5, 6, and now 8, and all have been fine. But then think about how much better the iPad 2 was over iPad 1, Mini 2 over Mini 1, Air 2 over Air 1, AW 1 or 2 over Series 0 -- all big jumps in quality. If you're one of those who replaces their device EVERY year, it doesn't matter, because then you get the better one the year after. But if you stick with your devices for 2-3 years, that difference in quality can make a big difference in the user experience over that time-frame.

And to Apple, the benefits of bluetooth (no wires) outweighs every other drawback you just mentioned.

To put it bluntly, Apple being Apple has a vision of how they want their products to be used, and will help nudge users towards this direction by promoting technologies which support this vision while simultaneously deprecating technologies which don't.

Apple has this idealised world view where their products all connect to one another wirelessly. And it evidently matters enough to them that they created the W1 standard, and were willing to risk backlash by removing the headphone jack.

I think I see where Apple is going. They are positioning wearables as their next platform after the iPhone. By their very nature, wearables need strong, reliable wireless connectivity (W1 chip). They need long battery life in a tiny form factor (here's where the power efficiency of iOS and their miniaturisation expertise comes in). You need good aesthetics to make people be willing to be seen wearing them (no wires, Apple's penchant for good design and their sheer brand power). You need them to play well with one another (power of the Apple ecosystem and being able to control both hardware, software and services).

I think we will start to see the wisdom of Apple dropping the headphone jack very soon, once they start playing their cards.

For years apple kept feeding us the Kool-Aid that a phone with a bigger screen is a bad thing. They also mocked Microsoft surface , and galaxy note phones, only to create their own versions of them years later.

Don't believe everything Johnny tells you, he's been wrong so many times
