If the first one isn't even out yet, why don't they use that lighter design for the first generation? I hate when they hold out new features so people would upgrade. Put out the best product you can at the time and make improvements from there.
Standard business practice. Happens everywhere and makes perfect business sense. I do it with my business too: create software that’s great but make sure there’s enough room for improvement that the customer keeps coming back. If they get everything on day 1, there’s no incentive for repeat business. Repeat business is more profitable than new customers.

What surprised me most about this rumor is that not only it's hard to believe a company can do so much better than competition, considering battery, size, weight, technology available and so on, but according to this indiscretion Apple can already do better than that.
This, to me, is incredibly hard to believe.
So what, competition have been sleeping in the past couple of years?

iPod, iPhone, iPad, Watch. And most recently, M series cpu/gpu SOCs.

Soon, an AR device.

Seriously

Was recently looking for the latest and greatest Android device for a friend. And it looks like they've given up now.

In terms of hardware, nothing is even close, or even trying to be close to iPhone 13 pro.

The reviews that say these devices are closely matched are a joke - even the cameras at this point are way worse in the latest S21 - they used to be able to compete. CPU - don't even mention it, iPhone is so far ahead it's about to lap the competition.

Those people still getting Androids are doing so either for price reasons or because they just prefer the Android OS, which does some things better than iOS, and others worse. It's less opinionated and more practical in many areas. It's less "we know best" and more "this works really well" kind of oriented.

But the hardware - pfft. They've just thrown in the towel.

Looks bulky and heavy this first gen version. Yeah probably best to wait for the 2nd gen.

At this point, it appears to be much more of an R&D Project than an actual Product !

Also, as a reminder, OR for those who are UN-aware, if Apple does NOT get a Stay from the Ninth Circuit today, they will need to be in compliance with the Epic vs Apple court ruling tomorrow !

It takes like several years to prepare and productionize cutting edge hardware. You have to create a whole manufacturing process around it. Also you learn stuff from one gen to the next.

Isn't Virtual Reality an oxymoron? I looked it up and seems it actually might be a pleonasm (which looks like something pulled from an anagram maker)

Leakers gotta stop putting rumors like this out, and just push their sources for details on things that are imminently releasing.

It should look more like glasses not like diving equipment. With an option to look sideways and see what REALLY happens around you. While I can imagine many uses I expect that people in the public will oppose VR glasses as other people fear to be filmed and identified without consent by other people's devices, getting followed, tagged and flagged by big companies for profit via other people's networked devices. Somebody mentioned above the glasshole image.
The technology might be ready not sure about society. It will be a great tool for gaming at least.

Apple can even talk about a 3rd gen or 4th gen AR/VR headset being worked on and people will still purchase the 1st gen rather than wait for the better models to arrive because Apple knows it's fan base will purchase anything that gets released.
Upgrading one's devices every year does usually seem excessive, but you're trying to use that as evidence to support... "don't get a device that'll be released this year or next, because there'll be a better one in 5+ years"? That seems like an odd take. Technology always improves over time. At some point you need to decide it's okay to upgrade. Otherwise we'll get "don't buy a land-based car now! There's gonna be flying cars in 30 years!" (yeah, but how do you get around until then?).

And here I thought it was bad when a store puts out Halloween candy on Labor Day or Christmas stuff after Halloween but this is some next level gun jumping!

All I can say is I hope Apple get this integrated with multiple 3D design and viz apps so we can use it to create the content for consumers…….

Apple is putting out the best products they can at any given time. But more time = better products. No one forces you to purchase first generation hardware/software.

2nd generation in 2024 is possible assuming the 1st gen launches at least by early 2023. Expecting the 1st gen to be priced very high. Maybe the future versions might be slightly cheaper.
