I just got an ad on Instagram for this 5K monitor from an unknown (to me, anyway) brand called "Kuycon". I can't find much of anything on the web about it and wondered if anyone had any experience.

It certainly *looks* nice, like a clone of an Apple Studio Display -- but also I wonder if it's just a scam or garbage:

FWIW, this uses an 8bpc panel. The Apple Studio Display uses a 10bpc CORRECTION: 8bpc+FRC panel.

Oh! What does that mean?
It means the Apple Studio Display (and the Dell UP2715K, HP Z27q and LG UltraFine 5K) can display more colours (up to 1.07 billions) than this Kuycon (and the Iiyama XB2779QQS and Planar IX2790), which is limited to 16.7 millions. Whether this is noticeable depends on what you do, but it's worth knowing.

For sure, thanks! Do you have any experience or have you seen any reviews or anything? My scam radar went up when I couldn't find much of anything about this brand on the internet outside a few Vietnamese YouTube videos and a couple of listings on gamer keyboard sites.

It is real, not that I’d heard of them before. I did find a discussion on Reddit by someone who had one. Apparently it has the LG 5k panel and worked well until it failed after 6 months.
Whoof. That's too bad. The price is right and design-wise it actually looks better than the Apple Studio Display. That 90° pivot would be super useful.

Does the ASD use dithering? Or is it a true 10 bit panel?

I have huge doubts whether the image quality is sufficient for professional work

Still going to wait to see what the Samsung Viewfinity S9 looks like and costs, but as this has DP, as well, it could be an option for me (I need to connect a PC and a Mac to the display).

In the same boat as you. Need DP for windows to possibly enable dual 5K (LG 5K over TB (dual DP 1.2 in) + Kuycon (single DP 1.4))

I have to admit that it does look great. Sure its a 'cheap' copy of XDR but that doesn't matter that much. I wish more companies were doing this so we get better looking screens and the the ugly plastic crap we are always exposed to. (let alone the fact that we don't have 5k screens with high ppi available)
its about time that the market is flooded with more 5k high ppi options. Apple's monopoly was simply annoying for the customers.

Why the doubts? There are very very very few companies (maybe just one?) producing 5K panels... so the odds are good that it's one of the same LG panels used in the iMac or Studio Display.

We went through the same thing a decade ago when the noname brand "Auria" unleashed their cheap WQHD display, supposedly using the "reject panels" and dramatically undercutting the price of the Apple displays they borrowed from. I still have one of those - it has its faults, but image quality was never one of them.

My thoughts exactly. I’m thinking LG at this point has scaled the panel cost so low they can afford to sell them to third parties.

Is no one brave enough to pick one up?

I'm waiting to see what Samsung brings in terms of connectivity (hopefully newer than DP1.4 and HDMI 2.0). I also feel more comfortable with Samsung as a brand in terms of servicing if something goes wrong.

A reddit user in Singapore bought one for their Hackintosh and said it failed within 6 months (they receive a replacement under warranty but had to pay $100 in shipping both-ways and the replacement panel is slightly misaligned). They also have an Apple Studio Display and say they feel the ASD is a much better display in terms of build quality and ease of use with macOS.

I'm not saying that's acceptable... but the failure rate for the LG UltraFine 5K wasn't exactly "low" either...

It sounds like this Kuycon might be glossy? Between that and the stand options (fixed, adjustable height, rotation capable, and VESA mounts), the Kuycon might actually win out over the Samsung, on paper, in my opinion.

And the price - $779 with the standard stand - that's less than half the cost of an Apple Studio Display... and not significantly more than the $500+ most people have invested in their DIY 5K iMac adaptations... for arguably a nicer looking package and without any fiddling. 🤷‍♂️
