I guess it fixed the problem. I left it on and checked "put the hard disks to sleep when possible" in the system preferences. Sleeps and wakes up normally, like my older d2 Quadra drive

Good to hear that LaCie was able to solve the problem with a firmware update, they're nice hard drives and lots of people depend on them for their work.

I ordered this one on B&H and didn't really trust the reviews reporting this problem. I already had 1TB LaCie drive that worked perfectly and generally, their products are very good. So I trusted the brand and ordered 2TB drive. I was a little bit disappointed when It didn't work as I expected, but still didn't return, hoping that update would fix everything.
I was right, LaCie definitely is the brand that you can trust.

It's a shame it took them this long to solve the problem. I originally encountered this way back in April, and LaCie was singularly unhelpful at the time. I ended up returning the LaCie in favor of an OWC Qx2 which gave me more storage for a lower price [but with much higher noise level].

OK, I managed to install the new firmware via Terminal. Drive worked fine until it went to sleep, then same hang as before.

Not fixed on a brand new iMac running Lion.

i'm really contemplating buying this drive...can anyone confirm that with the new firmware update it works well / perfectly on LION ?

As long as you don't plug it in via Firewire, it works great when running Lion. This is my second 2Tb drive with the same sleep problem, and I'm getting discouraged. None of my other drives have the same issues.

I had this problem for a while with Lacie d2 Quadra v3 1TB.
The disk was just showing some crazy activity, but not responding. And the IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType00::setPowerState console messages were also there. Flashed the FW update, will see how it goes.
BTW: I'm running Lion.

Update works OK with Lion

Hi

I had the same problem with my iMac (2011) running SL and now Lion. The d2 Quadra V3 was not able to wake when in sleep and connected through a FW800.

I installed the update four hours ago; now, it seems that it works OK. The disk is used for Time Machine backups and before, after the first hour backup, the disk was unable to be accessed. Now, after the update, it seems that the disk can do all hourly backups.

I will let you know if an erratic behaviour appears in next days, but overall it seems that the update from Lacie is successful.

same problems with d2

I have tried mine with both an express card/34 with the 3.0 and the firewire 800, and have experienced a number of sleep disorders, and system freezes that stop as soon as I turn off the d2. I have run the gamut with Lacie with firmware updates and re-formatting, having to move 250+ gb data over to another external. On their recommendation, used cmd line on my PC, ran diskpart, clean, then 8 hours on the MBP zeroing out sectors, all to no avail. My MBP is 2011, i7 8gb blah blah etc. In order to test this issue, I have a homebuild i7 PC with the same blah blah etc, so I have reformattted the d2 to NTFS to see how it handles the sleep issue. If it works there, it will tell me if the problem is the drive or the Mac. I should know within the next couple of days.
The d2 drive works properly on a PC with a fw800 and 3.0 hookup...goes to sleep and wakes up as it should, which tells me it is a "not ready for prime time", i.e. Mac, HD

Same Problem with new d2 Quadra v3

I just read thru all these threads. My new d2 Quadra v3 does not wake. The Lacie update tool says it has not been tested for my version of OS (10.6). I ran it anyway to find out I have the latest firmware version. At least it doesn't lock up my system like it did when I first installed it. Had to uncheck "put hard disks to sleep." I also put it first in the chain. I have an older LaCie Big Disk Extreme+. It has no sleeping/waking problems.

My workaround right now is to switch the drive on and off, which the OS gives me an error for not ejecting the drive properly.

A real pain…

Install the firmware update - it works

I would make a backup of the contents before updating the firmware as you can never tell if there will be a problem or not.

I just installed the new firmware, it worked great and did not lost any data. Problem solved.

I am about to purchase a LaCie d2 Quadra v3 2 TB drive, which I will connect with Firewire to iMac Time Machine running Lion. I have been shocked to read about the problems, and was hoping someone here could verify that the firmware update mentioned does indeed fix this problem. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I have updated firmware and it works perfectly. I'm not sure about lion, (I've read some rumors about Adobe products problems with lion and I'm still running snow leopard). Is anyone running lion and using this drive? I wanna update to lion and info would be appreciated :)

I find the light on my d2 Quadra v3 1TB turns off when the unit goes to sleep, even though it's still plugged in. It does, however, wake up appropriately. My older d2 Quadras all keep their light on when they're asleep. Are the v3 units supposed to turn their lights off when asleep? I use a firewire connection.

It's normal. Mine does so too

Same problem persist

I just bought 3TB LaCie d2 Quadra v3 7200RPM EK, despite this topic.
I guessed the problem is solved.
However, I have the same simptoms on my disk.
I tried to instal the firmware with no success.
In the Terminal, I 've got this message.
Can anybody help? Thanks!

Hi everybody !
It's my first post and i have some questions,
Maybe someone will be able to help me

I've got same issue with same disk (v3 3TB)..Does anybody know what can be cause ??
I do not have waking problems but one thing is really annoying. I have enabled "put the hard disk to sleep when possible" and a moment after i stop using disk i't goes to sleep. After some time drive is turning on despite i didn't accessed the disk. There is no programs on disk, only backup (time machine is off).
It would not be a problem if disk was not so loud...
what are your experiences in this matter ?
did anybody have same problems ?
Thanks,

Well, bummed to report that this firmware update didn't work for me on Mountain Lion.

I recently purchased a 3TB version of this drive at a fantastic price refurbished. (I think I can see why they were available now..) Anyhow, this is the first drive I have had attached long-term to my iMac (it is replacing an old NAS), and I was really surprised at how unstable it has been. My iTunes and iPhoto libraries are stored on one partition, and Time Machine on another. As with everyone else, it would fairly reliably lock up the machine coming out of sleep or during a restart when connected via FireWire 800. (really irritating because the connection to the NAS was 100% flawless for years)

I finally came across this thread and was hopeful, but while the update made things better, it did not solve the issue entirely. So, rather than try to switch it out, I'm connecting via USB2 which seems to work fine. It's a bummer, but the data is already on the drive and now it's mostly read-only, and honestly I bought the drive expecting to use USB2 as I actually did not realize my older iMac has a FW800 port.

Fixed by adding Thunderbolt

I was having this hassle with Mountain Lion - Quadra Drive would not wake up, even with the firmware upgrade.

I installed a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter and plugged the Quadradrive into that. Now it works normally and wakes up as per the documentation.

So maybe the fundamental issue is a problem with the base firewire offering on the iMac.
