Another STM Fan

I have a 17" "convertible" bag/backpack, also STM. I swear by those people!

It's got big pockets which work with my packrat habits, and a different detachable pocket for my cell phone.

I'm short, so the backpack works well for me, but I could make it a regular bag if I wanted to.

i went with a timbuk2 bag because Powells (largest independently owned book store in the US) has a bunch of TB2 bags on display for me to look at, as did REI. It is hard to order online because bags can look and function way different in real life, ya know. I ordered online after looking at it in person and putting my bags/MB and how it feels.

If you have a good photography store or book store or outdoor store (REI) near you, see if they have bags. Then buy online if it is cheaper.

The Booq bags are the best I've ever seen period, but they are expensive.

Dollar For Dollar the SwissGear Synergy might be the best bag out there for a 15" Laptop, LOTS of storage, well made and comfortable for well under $100.

My $.02

I would recommend a Dakine. I have one and its amazing. Loads of space. great design. and a space perfect for a macbook pro or macbook :)

I'm running a Dakine as well. I believe mine is called the "Campus" and I've had it for almost well over 1.5 years and it has served me well. There's a specialized sleeve for the laptop, keeping it well padded from binders/books/notebooks. I have the Speck hardcase and an Incase sleeve for my whitebook, as well. But there's plenty of room for (in my case last semester) 1 5-subject notebook, 2 lab binders, and 1 college sized textbook. Giving other circumstances, I could have probably fit more in there comfortably with my laptop inside.

The only perks I have with it is that there's no velcro strap or securing factor to close the in-backpack sleeve and also, the pens/pencils compartment is rather small.

But other than that, this backpack goes a long way for being less than $50 (at least when/where I got it).

I have several friends that use Booq and love them. I will probably go that route for my next bag. I am not in school but I travel internationally constantly and carry clothes and shoes for 2-3 days on me.

I am currently using a The North Face Surge Backpack. It is an awesome backpack. It looks and feels slim but I can fit so much stuff in there it is ridiculous. You can also find it much cheaper than the price on The North Face website.
