Interesting, they've never allowed me to do that.

Were the devices in question non-portables like monitors, AirPort, Apple TV, and iMac's perhaps? For devices used out of the home like iPhones and iPads, they've always required I bring it in for a quick once-over.

It was a rMBP..

Don't believe everything posted. Apple wants to inspect for physical damage on AppleCare +.

We don't...

OP did you get this sorted out now?

I've been shopping at Apple for over 20 years. They've had plenty of cash out of me.
But that doesn't give you the right to defraud Apple. Apple's cash balance or marketshare should not be used to justify your actions.

I know it stinks that the computer is damaged, but it was not apple's fault that you damaged it (has horrible of a mistake that was) and so why should they be the one's footing the bill. Also consider what happens to the computer after you return it. They'll in turn resell it as a refurb, so you may be impacting another consumer's purchase with your actions.

I know people on the internet cannot influence someone's actual actions and if you made up your mind, nothing I post will affect that, but I think what some posters here are talking is about doing the right thing, even when its painful.

so very well said.

And who the hell has the special screwdrivers in their home that Apple use. Or isopropyl alcohol lying around. I certainly don't.

It's not that special of a screw driver, available all over from $5 for a poor quality one to $20 for a good quality one. Personally, I have never once regretted buying a tool. Every time I buy a tool thinking it's a waste because I only use it once, I end up using it 10 more times at least. I think the fact that fewer and fewer people have a good set of tools at home that they know how to use is a real shame and causes a lot of waste. Sure, few people probably have this pentalobe screw driver. But this is how I see it from your story - not buying the tool 5 years ago when Apple switched to using pentalobe screws hindered your ability to properly react to this crisis.

As for isopropyl alcohol, I think a lot of people have that at home. Not only is it a basic component of a first aid kit, it's also very useful solvent for cleaning all sorts of messes, from stickers to markers to stains to gunk. Every home should have at least a small bottle of rubbing alcohol.
