Google is doing it with the Glass project. That's a completely new wearable comp. category. I predict it will be big one day. My point is not that Apple needs to do a glass project specifically, but that apple is doing NOTHING new as far as new product categories. Other companies are, and glass is an example.

What Google is doing with Glass is easily copied. They are not providing any value. A dozen companies could easily copy what Google is doing there. If they are not doing it, it's because there's no market. I predict that the few people using this product will soon have enough of being called a "glass hole" and being treated as one, and then it will die.

Yup it's happening. Just look at the state of iOS 7 and the cheap plastic rumoured iPhones. Steve Jobs would have never allowed this.

I agree.
He would have probably fired the designers of iOS 7/8 and Mac OS X Yosemite.

Just as long as we dont go back into numbering schemes i think we'll be fine.

iPad 5220!
iPhone IIvi!
Mac Pro 9600!

I don't care about machines' names, only efficiency.

That was a great machine. :)
The first I used back in 1997 for online video editing.

surely you jest

While I will grant you iOS7 has quite a few issues, it looks like they have worked through them.

Plastic phones? iPhone 3, 3s and 3g all plastic backed. Oddly, the iPhone 5c was actually a great phone, a tad high priced, besides that the biggest problem with that phone.........it didn't come in Black!

It's still better built than any Samsung phone (except the weather/waterproof one) and it is better built, just not waterproof. Certainly better built than all the LGs. In fact the only phone on the market that rivals any iPhone is the HTC-M8

… his idea comes out just today with apple event scheduled.

Larry Ellison's idea? Or the general idea of executive keynotes addressing complexity, cost, cloud, and transformational technologies?

The start date for Oracle OpenWorld 2014 was known in November last year and today's press release from Oracle essentially confirms that his two keynotes will be given – nothing about his ideas for either one.

(Please, am I missing something? I Googled for other news about 'Larry Ellison idea' from the past twenty-four hours, couldn't find anything that might relate to this topic.)

I remember the days when Oracle was a focused company with an understandable and reliable set of products, rather buying everything under the SUN ;) Now, with the founder gone, it's just a mess of products that even the Oracle sales team can't demo without them crashing left, right and centre.

Oh hang on, the founder was..... and the founder is still there?

Unfortunately it's true. It's not just Steve's impact, but the entire concept of drive for the company. Everything they do is so interdependent on their overall theme of delivering a good product, while using the bare minimum hardware. That's such a delicate method, that if they fail to do that correctly, they will lose all hope. And of course Jony Ive taking over iOS and sh***ing all over the design doesn't help things. He got rid of what everyone loved about iOS, and now even though it looks more modern, it is a cluster fk of white, and the device is harder to use, and takes more time. It's not just getting used to things, it just isn't as intuitive. You can't even tell what half of the icons are while in apps anymore because they're just blank icons with white outlines.

Ivy should not be allowed anywhere near interface design. iOS7 is form over function. It's just plain hard to see in some instances, and thus is making it a generational product -IOW younger, better sighted people. Oh yeah, it's ugly too.

3 years in and STILL no products released on his own. I thought this year "Apple had all types of products in the pipeline"?

Just the same old rehash of their basic 3 offerings. I still don't see The Watch taking off like the iPhone or iPad.

Whatever. I don't care what Ellison says. What I do care about is that Apple has not introduced a new product since January 2010, almost FIVE YEARS WITH NO NEW PRODUCTS!!!! Certainly the iphone and ipad have kept developing, though those are now pretty much incremental changes, but half a decade since a new product category is an eternity in the world of electronics. During that time there have been dramatic developments in all sorts of consumer technology, and apple has basically done nothing except continuing to exploit their legacy product lines, many of them on a diminishing basis: the ipods are going down, now even the ipads are going down, and android is so far ahead in market share it's not even funny, meanwhile the iphone has gotten a ton of competition that frequently outstrips it in many areas.

I'm sorry, but Apple looks like it has stood still. There's nothing of interest that happened since SJ died. TC keeps promising new products, but it's been all talk for years now. The most exciting thing apple has produced recently is rumors and more rumors.

I don't know if apple has a grim future, but so far it's been a dud since SJ's death. We'll see what they'll come up this year (more promises "2014 will see exciting new products!" said TC) - it's almost 75% over so whatever... and so far I'm not even that excited by a wristwatch or the eternal supposed TV (not exactly a brand new idea, and one that never appears to materialize either).

Unless apple really blows us away with a new product category, apple is turning into another sony - a slow, slow decline.

What has anyone announced that's a new product in the computer industry? For a company to have had one successful product like the iPod is hard to do by itself, the iPhone even harder, and the iPad even harder, but to have THREE successful products that have evolved drastically inside and out over the course of X number of years and to bring in the revenue and profits is unheard of. Samsung didn't do that, Microsoft didn't do that, Intel didn't do that, HP didn't do that, Dell didn't do that and you are acting like Apple's not done anything? They just introduced the watch, which might turn out to be another successful product that will evolve over time, they have AppleTV which is evolving over time.

Obviously, they have a lot on the plate as is with just keeping up with demand for what they currently have on the market.

What else could they do? A gaming console? I doubt they are going to do that.

A smartTV? I don't know how many people actually even USE the Smart features of a SmartTV. I've heard only a small number of users actually use much of the Smart functionality of SmartTVs, which kind of defeats the purpose of marketing one.

What else is there? They still have to evolve laptops and desktops on the Mac side along with continual S/W and OS development. What more do you want? What more would make sense for them to create?

Yeah, you're right, the AppleWatch isn't a new product for Apple. roll eyes.

Ego is all it takes to turn rich people into crazy worthless people doing nutty things for fun.

OK, What would you spend your money if you were worth $100Million to $10 Billion? Give it away to complete strangers to make yourself look like a nice person so people will stroke your ego? Most of these people do that and they do it to get a tax write off and some do it so people will think they are good people, even if they aren't.

Until you have the kind of money these people have, you can only guess what you would do with that kind of money. You certainly wouldn't go around buying cheap crap trying to save a buck, that's for sure.

Seriously, I'm not trying to stick up for Ellison, i'm just saying that super wealthy people spend money on things they like and they usually don't try to save a buck by buying cheap products even if you or I wouldn't buy it.

Yeah, that's why they call them stupid rich, they have stupid amounts of money and they do things that regular folks would think are stupid. Well, I would rather be stupid rich than stupid poor where I wasn't sure if I had enough money to never have to worry about how to pay for the roof over my head, food on the table, etc. The average person is probably going to end up broke or live on a very minimal amount of money during retirement. That's REGULAR people. Do you like being REGULAR people?

Off-topic: pretty much, yes. I have lived on a shoestring, gone hungry with literally no food at home, got into debt, considered bankruptcy, hitch-hiked to and from work countless times to save money, and I have always assumed that I'll be minimalist in old age. There was plenty of enjoyment – more than I can now get with some disposable income.

Back on topic, my earlier post:
  • did Ellison's words, in context, truly hint at a bleak future?

As someone who never worries about money in my life, you are somewhat crazy on your views on income and wealth.

Can't you take a joke?

Well, I've seen what kinds of things the super rich buy and some of it is stupid. 24K toilets that cost $5 Million. I don't see a problem with a nice toilet for home, but this is verging on obscene.

What someone buys, no matter the cost, isn't any of your business. No one judges what you buy with your money, you shouldn't either.
