Weird name aside, it makes me think . . . This may be where Apple is starting to really differentiate features between iPhone and iPad systems. And then the connection / port of apps between macOS, iOS, and iPad would be facilitated via Marzipan.

Then again, I have no data to back this up and I'm sure we'll see all this go down in the next two hours. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When you think about it, another way of saying it would be 'ipa DOS'.

What a horrible name. Will they also rename iOS for iPhone to iPhoneOS? Oh dear…

iOS name maybe sunset for the following with dedicated AppStores:

TVOS
WatchOS
iPadOS
iPhoneOS
VROS
CarOS
macOS

Marzipan maybe bridging or merging the gap between macOS and iPadOS.

Makes sense and may empower and speed up development for the various devices.

horrible - Apple can't keep secrets related to their internally developed software - this should have been a surprise during the keynote - oh well

I like this - I don't care what they might call it - creating two code bases for me would be better than having a lot of conditional stuff for a universal app (iPhone class device & iPad). A more directed development experience. The OS' would probably remain quite similar, but with additional iPad API for UIKit, etc.

Don’t get your hopes up. Apple will short-change us.

We’ll get only a few big changes at WWDC. Then may take couple more features when the next generation releases.

Today I’m expecting floating windows, dark mode, new gestures, and new iPad OS name. And that’s all.

Finally!

I have always viewed the os on iPad just wasted the screen real estate. Currently it’s just a blown up iPhone. The iPad needs a specific os that take advance of it size, battery life, processor etc.

Probably confirms all the good stuff is for the iPad once again and the iPhone sticks with the same old useless 13 year old home screen.

This is actually great. It means that Apple are taking the iPad seriously and see it as a wholly different device to the iPhone, hence needing its own separate OS.

Makes sense
iphone apps wont need to include all the images and code that is only need for ipad and vice versa.
Could help shrink iphone app size

I did like write once, run on both.

Apple may be planning to rename the version of iOS that runs on the iPad 'iPadOS,' which suggests major distinctive changes coming to the software in iOS 13.

The new iPadOS name was spotted by developer Steve Moser just ahead of when WWDC kicks off in what appears to be the Developer License terms and conditions.

A string of text reads "Apple Software" means Apple SDKs, iOS, watchOS, tvOS, iPadOS, and/or macOS," with iPadOS being a new term referring to the software running on the iPad.

Rumors have suggested the iPad is getting some major updates in iOS 13, which could provide a more PC-like usage experience. There will be new multitasking interfaces with stackable cards and multiple window support, along with a possible tab view.

New gestures are also coming, and with macOS 10.15, Apple is adding tools that will let developers easily port their iPad apps to the Mac.

Moser has also found indications of new PassKit pass types for cars and hotels, which means in iOS 13, you may be able to store temporary cards for unlocking hotel rooms and rental vehicles.

I don't care what they call it, as long as the iPad-specific features justify the name change. iOS on the iPad has never really done the hardware justice.

True that. Hopefully we see the software finally catching up with the power on tap.

They can call it whatever they want. As long as the OS finally takes advantage of all the horsepower in the iPads. It would be the first iOS device I've bought for personal use in a long time. I don't want to get my hopes up, but fingers crossed for some significant news.

one of the best parts if true is people won't be saying an iPad is just a larger screen iPhone or ask why would I ever buy an iPad? this (if true) with big changes will likely boost overall iPad sales

really wish Apple would do stuff like this just to punk us, put out fake rumors, keep us guessing

Now, from Fragmentation of devices to Fragmentation of OS! That's a new leap for Apple!
