Engadget posts a possible image of what appears to be the Apple Tablet.
Okay, we obviously can't confirm this, but we just got two very interesting images of what certainly looks like a prototype Apple tablet, or what could be the tablet bolted down to a table. It's big -- really big -- and it's running what clearly looks like an iPhone app, although we've never seen an iPhone app with that interface or at that resolution before.
The site isn't convinced that the image is legitimate. The device appears to have a very iPhone-like Maps application with UI elements consistent with the current iPhone. Obviously, the screen is much larger with a much larger viewing area. There appears to be a home button at the bottom of the device.

The black cloaking could be consistent with security measures in place by Apple according to a 2009 New York Times article:
Work spaces are typically monitored by security cameras, this employee said. Some Apple workers in the most critical product-testing rooms must cover up devices with black cloaks when they are working on them, and turn on a red warning light when devices are unmasked so that everyone knows to be extra-careful, he said.

Hmmm…ewww, glossy. Def. not e-ink, but who really knows. Maybe some new technology.

Well, there's one in action. Clearly under some sort of wraps, so no hints on the form factor. The "No Service" is interesting. Only 12 hours to go.

How nice that MacRumors posts screenshots of a fuzzy Google Maps on a tablet from Engadget but makes no mention of the WSJ article that Apple wants the publishers to charge $12.99- $14.99 for "hardcover" books on iTunes.

My biggest fear...

It looks like we are really going to have to subscribe to another f**king service if this picture is really it. I don't want to have a special AT&T or Verizon subscription to make my tablet work. I just want a simplified laptop or an iPhone with more real estate and video chat.

Does anybody see a camera on the front of this thing?

My guess is its clamped down for some type of durability testing, like vibrations or something.

Jeez, guys...that's not the unit, that's a black frame that's bolted down over/around it, likely so it stays put in whatever facility that is.

To be clear: no, the bezel is not that big, because that's not the bezel.

I take it you don't have wifi, anywhere?

Did you expect some type of free service that apple magically pays for worldwide?

Thats what I said, why did you quote me?

Looks believable. Apple wouldn't show the actual hardware to software testers (which is what this looks like). I heard they kept software and hardware groups completely separate and unaware of each other during the development of the iPhone.

At the very least, it's the only "leaked" photo that actually has the balls to show the interface, which is going to be the very interesting part of the tablet's design.

My theory with that maps app is that it's the new maps application from apple. They are getting rid of google maps and that is what their own new maps app looks like.

Darnit, I need a job.

I'm going to need to sell somebody else's organs to buy this thing if it does what I'm hoping for.

I have some pretty specific requirements, so if it doesn't fit in, then I can breathe easy. But if it can do what I need, AND is the right form factor, I'm going to have to get really creative.

Needless to say, if you see me hanging around an Apple store after it's released, and I've got garden shears, you should probably come back later. :)
