Probably just some sourgrapes that are still locked into their contracts with various other carriers voting negative.

Are you kidding? AT&T can't make Apple do anything. Apple has them by the ear.

As far as anyone knows, the name up in the corner is basically the only branding AT&T will get on the product itself. In other words, that tiny piece of pixel real estate is essential to AT&T's identification with iPhone. I know Apple keeps rigorously tight control, but given the brand name's importance I have to presume that AT&T retained some sort of right to dictate what name goes up there in the promotional photos -- and when -- throughout their Cingular-to-AT&T transition.

Will people who already get other services from AT&T get discounts on iPhone service? Many companies, including phone, cable, and even insurance companies give you discounts if you subscribe to multiple of their offerings.

I'm actually pretty excited about this. I live in Alaska. I was pretty down about the whole iPhone thing right from the get go. We don't have Cingular coverage up here so, I was pretty much set that I would never see an iPhone. But we do have AT&T! Have had for a long, long time. Now my only problem is how I'm gonna get out of my contract with Cellular One and come up with the price of admission for an iPhone.

First ever post to MR btw.:D

I'm pretty sure that AT&T Alascom isn't going to carry the iPhone. If they do, though, I'd gladly switch from ACS!

(In fact, didn't AT&T Wireless in Alaska become Cellular One? I know it did 'round my parts.)

Dateline: San Francisco, January 2014

"Today at Macworld, an original model iPhone branded with Cingular livery sold for $2305 at auction."

Everyone is going to have different experiences with their wireless companies.

I've been with Cingular for about 5 months, and I've had no problems.

I had Sprint for a long time. Had no problems with them until I moved.

I moved to a different county in the same state. Turns out, Sprint didn't service my new location, but they STILL sold me a BlackBerry that wouldn't get any service!!

As far as the name change, personally, I couldn't care less.

I dunno. Can't remember. It was so long ago. I'm going to keep my hopes up though. I really want an iPhone:p

Anyone else been with Cingular since the 90s?

I started with Pacific Bell in 95, then they split off into Airtouch, then they turned into Verizon, i was with verizon for years, but they didn't have a bluetooth phone, so I switched to Cingular which was part of Pacific bell, then AT&T wireless was bought by Cingular, but then AT&T bought PacBell, now AT&T is taking over Cingular, so after 12 years i am really still with the same company I started with in 95....Crazy huh ??

it's the network

The only saving grace to this whole deal is that they DID NOT go with Verizon. I think T-Mobile was the first to have a coverage map on their web-site - at least of the GSM carriers in my area. And I can do ANYTHING on their web-site to change my service (including enabling or disabling international calling) - During my last 3 week stint with Cingular (failed Treo migration) after my 4th call to customer service, and the promises of 'okay you can make international calls TOMORROW' and then tomorrow coming and them still being blocked... I'm not too excited about the switch I will make soon.

But, hey I'm sure I can try it for 30 days and get a complete refund if the service still stinks...

Then someone can get a mark-down on my used iPhone...

If you compare the coverage maps of AT&T to a CDMA provider like Alltel (which has a partnership with Verizon) you can see why west of the Mississippi river many people have issues with the GSM network. iPhone is great, but get into a vehicle and head across the country and you will wish you didn't have a GSM phone.

As long as you stay out of the rural areas then the GSM network is fine. If you live or travel frequently into rural areas then a CDMA phone is a much better choice. Where I live, in the upper midwest, the iPhone would be nothing more then a $600 paper weight.

I still find this funny.

I started out with Cingular in '01 and they had no coverage at my school and the areas around it. I then went to T-mobile which had the same coverage as Cingular. Then I went to sprint which worked pretty much every where. Now i'm with Helio which is Sprint network and Verizon's on roam. So pretty much if I don't get service, no one does.

Why would I want to go back to Cingular? Though my friend said it has improved.

I wonder if the iPhone will be able to connect to a BT keyboard?

That would be sweet

Interesting.. I have a small portable fold-up BT keyboard at home for use with phones, but it's so flimsy it's little better than using the phone itself. On the other hand, using an Apple BT keyboard would be great.

It'd be a great feature if you could just click a button and your Apple BT keyboard would connect to your phone for texting/email. Click the button again and it reconnects to your Mac.

...a $600 music & video playing paper weight.. ;)

Stupid Stupid Stupid

Teens could care less about the name AT&T. That was for us 80s kids.

I think you meant "teens could NOT care less"......not that they COULD care less". If they could care less than they do, that means that they do indeed care....which I don't think is what you meant. If they COULDN'T care less, that means that they now care so little that it is impossible to care less. If you catch my drift. But then again, I'm a 60's kid, not an 80's kid. Maybe thinks have been turned upside down since then.
