I just went ahead and booted into 'High performance' so as to use the 9600, battery life is down like only 20mins but the machine runs slightly faster, placebo affect perhaps, and no flicker!:p

Here's what the flickering is
LINK

That is my previous Pro that was returned last year. The replacement one does the same exact thing even after logic board replacement. My wife uses it in her classroom (teacher) so she keeps the brightness high during the day; it works fine in that environment but when she gets home, she uses the iMac b/c the flickering bothers her eyes.

As an anecdote, my Vaio does not do this on any brightness level--nor did I see any others (15" or 16") on display at the Sony Style store that did it on any brightness level. Believe me, I checked every one before I picked mine up.

We'll probably be selling it this summer since Apple won't fix it and considers it "normal." What a waste of $$$.

I have a late 08 2.4GHZ MBP with both screen flickering issues described in this thread. The low-brightness pulsing (especially on the 4th lowest bar), and the top half of the display flashing to black every so often. Both of these issues were only seen on the 9400 graphics. I made one trip to the Genius bar several months ago and after 15 minutes of waiting, the tech saw it happen. He told me I would have to send in my machine, (not an option for me, sorry) so I left the store. A few days ago, after the issues became worse, I returned to the Apple store for another appointment. I showed the Apple Genius the video on this blog. He said that he had seen this problem before and agreed to replace my logic board that evening. That was about a week ago, and all the issues have yet to resurface. Just to be sure, I've been running strictly on the 9400, with the brightness set to the 4th bar for about a week.
The genius also told me that screen replacements were not working on similar situations. Hopefully by now, this problem is becoming more well-known, and everyone having this problem get taken care of.

I only have the "top half of display flashes black" issue, but it only started happening recently: after my logic board was replaced for a separate issue (failure to wake from sleep)! You would think that's a slam dunk: "it must be related to the logic board." I took the computer back 4 weeks later; they replaced the logic board again but the problem persists. :(

To reiterate: This link is a video demonstration of the problem. It is as described in the text of his blog post and a comment from June 13th 2010 by "Bob".

I have now lived with the problem ever since snow leopard was released, and I am amazed how they have not found a solution for the problem yet.

Top half of display intermittent black flashes issue

I put up with this annoying issue for years, until a few weeks ago,
then read this on another forum.
"Open Energy Saver in System Preferences >
DESELECT Better Battery Life and SELECT Higher Performance"

Problem FIXED!!

This is not a fix. It's a workaround.
(and higher performance = more battery usage)

How do we enable this in SL? I remember this option in Leopard, but there is not such an option in SL...

Mine's been doing this a while but it's starting to become more pronounced. It's only for a few seconds when bringing the display back from sleep... Unfortunately I didn't get the AppleCare :'(

My late 08 MBP has been doing this for the last month or so. It's like the backlight turns off for a half second. I haven't yet noticed correlations for when it does this.

Oh, and I've also noticed a sort of 'pulsing' recently as well. It lasts for a few seconds and is the whole screen.

dimming screen

I have a brand new macbook pro, I got it this Christmas and its screen is getting brighter then dimming. I have my brightness setting at about 1 or 2, so really low, and the screen will jump up to full brightness. I don't game a lot other then Minecraft, and that isn't a super high graphics game like others are.

Is this what's happening to you guys or are your screens blacking out?

no there would be a slight black flicker (a millisecond) on the screen every so often. It is intermittent though... there is no pattern to it.

I'm out of warranty and I'm thinking about selling it and getting new one. Although, I'd rather just keep it, deal with it, and buy a new one in like 3 years. It still runs fine and I was going to upgrade the memory to 4GB soon.

Does anyone know if Apple will help out somehow out of warranty? Or would this still occur if an external display was used?

9400m flicker fixed by Apple!

Mine was fixed by apple! They replaced my logic board and it seems to be working great! We'll see how it does over time and if it'll come back... but as of today its great!

I lucked out and the genius hooked me up and fixed for free too! What a great guy!

It's been a good week for me!

I don't think mine does this. I just checked to see what video card I am using and I am on the "high performance" option which is the 9600M GT. The funny thing is I just reinstalled my OS about 1 week ago and never touched these settings so it must be the default setting to use the external graphics card.
