Ordered 64GB black on Apple online store launch day at 10 eastern time. Delivery just rescheduled from Oct 5 to Sep 28 by UPS.

in canada, the apple store aren't selling unlocked phones. Only locked for the first week. So retarded.

I was going to pick one up yesterday in Vancouver (no line ups, tons of stock), but they told me it was carrier locked. Only way to get one is waiting a week.

No email yet, but my phone that was originally quoted for Oct. 9th now says "preparing for shipment". That sounds like a good thing.

It's funny how when you pre-order anything, you're chances of getting screwed on launch day are 50/50.

On the other hand, if you don't pre-order, and walk into a store on launch day, you're almost guaranteed to get the product.

Must be cancellations (mapping uncertainty?).

There's no way they'd be able to ramp up volumes this quickly... but cancellation would bring forward other people's delivery dates.

It would be smart for Apple to be very, very conservative with initial delivery estimates since it's always better to deliver something early than late.

of course apple has enough phones for everyone, its just like the diamond industry when the sole supplier constricts supply it creates an artificial "shortage"

The increased supply probably consists of scuffed returns.

Which is why everyones email states its shipping out of ZhengZhou, China. Apple is shipping all of the scuffed ones to China so they can turn around and ship them right back.

I ordered directly from Apple around 4:45AM EST on Friday, so only an hour or so after the initial batch had sold out. I have received no notification of shipment so far. Could this be a difference between the Verizon and AT&T phones? Mine is an AT&T model.

I ordered an AT&T black 64GB at around the same time as you and mine has officially shipped, so you will probably be soon. Shipping email received at 7:13AM this morning.

Oh please. This is exactly what it looks like :

- Limit initial pre-order quantities to "sell out quick" and show back log on the website. Continue taking in pre-orders to claim record numbers !
- Lines form on the scare that there's actually a risk of not getting a handset.
- After all the media hype, lines, etc.., release stock for shipping since there's no value in holding back anymore, you've had your free publicity.

People who still don't get these manufactured "shortages" are scary. Maps and scratching have nothing to do with it. Apple will announce record numbers again for this launch. They were ready with record numbers of units pre-manufactured and ready to go.

I ordered 2 at 12:30 am Pacific on the 14th. Still shows "preparing to ship, delivery by October 5."

Also ordered 1 from A T & T at 9:00 am on the 14th. Shows "processing."

Should have stood in line at local A T & T office, there were only about 30 there. Could have lined up at 9, been out by noon.

They do this to reduce scalping.

Indeed!

I ordered during the rare moment it said "ships in 2 weeks" with a date of 1st October.

My phone was shipped last night and will be here on Monday 24th! A whole week early!

Unlikely, IMO.

There was no way Apple was going to sit on two week's worth of production volume. They conservatively estimate how many units they will have ready on "Launch Order Day" and once that target is met, they immediately kick it out two weeks to give them plenty of cushion to ensure that any production hiccups won't affect delivery.

Then, as production continues, they go back to the oldest unfilled orders and start filling them, moving the shipping date up from early October to late September.

Thank you for having common sense!

As others have said, would't it make sense for Apple to be conservative with shipping dates as its better to tell someone they're getting their device early than to overpromise and have to tell people their device won't be arriving on time. I ordered on the 15th from AT&T and I don't have a shipping date yet.

Sounds like a conspiracy theory to me. I know how much you hate those. ;)

I can't recall this ever happening before.

I think the cancellation reason (more phone availability) is more convincing.

I seem to recall it happening with my iPhone 4 order. *shrug*

Anyway, in order for Apple to fulfill likely millions of pre-orders upwards of a week or more early would have required millions of people to cancel their pre-orders on Friday because:

1) They secured an iPhone on Friday at a retail location
2) Were able to then cancel their pre-order before it went to "Preparing to Ship" status which many people are reporting happened on or before those retail locations opened for business (assuming they were on normal operating hours).

Sorry, but I don't find that argument a convincing one.

Unless only MacRumors members have been bumped up (so the number of cancellations would only need to be hundreds or thousands, not millions) and I am really not convinced that is the case. :)

The reason for early deliveries is actually pretty simple. Many people (like myself) preordered for delivery, but didn't want to wait several weeks to get their phone. So we cancelled our orders and picked one up at the store on release day.
