There's been more than enough reliable leakers stating that there is a 2021 mini (these "dummies" that Apple sends out for accessory makers are further proof that it's still in the cards this year).

NEXT year's mini is in peril - we'll need to see strong sales of the model this year if it's to stay in the lineup.

I think this years sales numbers will be better than last years.

Apple releases the 2020SE and the Mini in the wrong order last year.

There must have been a few million customers holding out for new smaller phone that jumped on the 2020SE thinking that was the best Apple would ever give them.

Upgrading this year makes a bit more sense than after just 3 months last year :)

People like myself who gave up a bit earlier will be ready for an upgrade as well.

The hardcore fans will buy 2x just because it’s rumoured to be the last of its kind.

I can tell you right now if there is no mini 13 I am seriously leaving Apple phones and finding something smaller.

Yeah, the choices suck but there must be something. I am just THAT sick of these huge ass phones.

I miss my Motorola L7.
Wow - you really do not like phones larger than the mini. For your sake, I hope there is a 13 mini. If not, good luck out there.

Even if i wanted to (and I don't), I don't think I could leave this ecosystem. I started using Macs around 1990, went on to study graphic design in college (all Macs) and I've never once been remotely compelled to look elsewhere. Along my journey, "computes" have synonymous with "Macs." Until now. My 10-yo son is desperate for a Windows machine - namely for Minecraft and the ray tracing those video cards offer. I'm stalling LOL. It would be the first non-Apple computer I have ever owned - a scenario I simply can't wrap my little brain around. Insert something here about old dog, new tricks, I suppose...

You know it's probably not that interesting a job to be the iPhone hardware designer (form factor) at this point.
I thought all of them quit their job and now helping Jonny Ive designing new toilets 🚽.

I would pay more for the iPhone Mini if it came as a "Pro", meaning a 3rd telephoto lens. That's the lens to have for taking portraits of people, which is usually the primary reason to take a photo to begin with.

That notch doesn’t look much smaller

The notch looks the same size as we have now

Moving the earpiece up does make the notch a little more narrow, but not by a huge amount. It is noticeable though if you compare next to an X or 12.

Same. Boring slow drip fed updates. Certainly not upgrading my 12pro- that was a minor enough upgrade user wise. No thanks Apple

Why would you consider upgrading a 12 pro to begin with? That's not even a year old. The 12 series WAS the big upgrade/design change (flat sides, 3rd camera, etc.), so it is expected the next few won't be major changes like that.

Being on a 1 year upgrade cycle has NEVER made sense unless you are a complete Apple fanboy, or just had more money than sense. At this point even upgrading every 2 years is a bit aggressive, given the smaller changes being made.

Something that has really struck me about Apple in the last few years is their focus on making things look iconic and not necessarily minimalist. The notch on the iPhone, the chin on the new iMac, the stems on the airpods, and now the peculiar arrangement of lenses on the iPhones. They really aren't afraid of making stuff look a bit odd for the sake of it being distinct and instantly recognizable. I guess they've always done this, but it's just something I've noticed particularly in the last few years. They'd prefer to focus on that rather than on traditional minimalism. It seems they'd almost prefer it to look controversial, just so people talk about it and have it be embedded in the cultural dialogue.
There is an actual functional purpose for the camera layout they started with the 11 Pro. It’s not just to look “odd” and therefore iconic.

Think about it. It’s arranged like a triangle, because there are 3 lenses. The benefit of this is that each lense is exactly the same distance from each other, no matter which lense you pick. If the lenses instead were arranged in 3 corners of the camera housing, then the 2 ends would be a further distance apart from each other, causing much more noticeable parallax when smoothly zooming in the camera app.

One of the great things about the iPhones zoom is that it smoothly transitions between all 3 lenses with minimal parallax. Well, a huge part of that is the rather ingenious layout of the lenses.

It’s an s year don’t expect bigger upgrades until next year

still

120hz
LTPO
AOD
new ultra wide
bigger batteries

Minecraft version available on the iPad

I just want it but without the camera bumps..... like I don't need 3 lenses sticking out, just give me one flat one..

Get rid of the bump and make the battery larger! It's a big sack and it can fill whatever space they give it! It's not like they are trying to conform to a couple Energizers with pre-determined size/shape!

Rant over. I get some of the people complaining that these upgrades aren't enough to update their phone from the 12 or even the 11 but I'm sitting here rocking a 6s that I was going to upgrade last year but since COVID kept me working from home I decided to keep it for another year. So I'm excited and I'm at a 95% probability that I'll be picking it up. One thing I wish would come over is the TouchID home button from the iPad Air. One of the reasons I skipped 12 is because it didn't have this in a time when we're wearing face masks constantly.

I agree with the person (or people) that said that Apple seems to have miscalculated a bit releasing the 2020SE and the 12 mini the same year. My wife was up for a new phone (upgrading from an OG SE) and she did NOT want a large one, even the SE was bigger than she wanted. But it was really the only option to get a new phone but not be huge. But if I showed her the mini, she probably would have chosen that one but alas, it was 5 months too late.

As far as sizes go, I haven't used an all screen iPhone yet so I don't know where my sweet spot is. I don't have huge hands and the mini intrigued me because the screen was larger than my 6s but the phone itself was smaller. However, I think the device being smaller in my hand may cause me to perceive it as a smaller screen mentally. When they release the 13 line up I'm going to have to go into the Apple store or AT&T and feel them out before I buy.

I get that, but at the same time, I think you're in the minority. We'll have to see how motivated Apple is to cater to the desire for smaller phones.

I know personally, I used to be in that camp. I felt like a cellphone should be small and easy to fit in a pocket. If you need all that screen space, you should get a tablet as "the right tool for the job".

But I've found myself pivoting to appreciating the "Max" version of the XS I carry now. I think for me, it coincided with letting my iPad Pro go and not buying another. I used to take it on my daily train commute in the DC area. But after the need for that ended (and now I live back in the midwest), I felt like an iPad was just unnecessary extra hardware for the sake of having it. I realized it's really my phone that's the one device I carry with me everywhere. (As a Tesla owner, it even serves as my car key.) So by going with a bigger one, I get the extra battery life the bigger internal battery offers and the screen space to substitute reasonably well for a tablet when I start doing more "computer-ish" things with it.

Seems like they don't have much of an upgrade going on here, so they're positioning the cameras diagonally just to invent some distinction. Sad.

Also, I love my iPhone 12 mini. The best iPhone ever made. My main gripe is that I wish I had a telephoto lens. If they can't squeeze 3 lenses into a mini, then I'd happily trade one of my wide-angle lenses for a telephoto lens.

I tell you what. I just finally went caseless last week on my 12 Pro. It’s incredible. Why do people use cases to cover up such a beautiful piece of tech?

Everything is good except thicker & heavier. The 12Pro feels worse in hand than my old 11Pro already.

I think you’re on the wrong website..

Typical Apple people, they criticise something until Apple does it. I remember years ago this site was all praise Apple for not having huge camera bumps, now they all love having this pointless huge things that 99 percent of people don't need.

Better cameras are nice, 12Pro bump is fine

Who is they? A mythical universe of people who praised apple for not having camera bumps, but today the EXACT same universe of people loves the camera bumps?

I agree with you in that the phones are beautiful. Especially that Pacific Blue color of the Pro.

But as someone who uses a phone for three years or so in a combination of home and industrial environments, protecting it from wear and tear and preventing accidental drops is more important than vanity. It’s not so bad with the flat edges of the 12 series but even then I was nervous just handling the thing before I got my case on it. I’m more than willing to add some thickness and heft to my phone if It means I can handle it with confidence. I like the one piece Otterbox Symetry cases in particular, not crazy big like the heavy rugged cases but just thick enough to make it feel like I’m holding something.

And it also helps that I don’t give a crap whether someone else can see what phone I have 😂
