I predict video chat will be allowed over 3G where the carrier allows it. Every other carrier in the world will...except for AT&T.

Still waiting for tethering...a year later.

I wouldn't be surprised, but I will be SOOOOOOOO FURIOUS if that happens! It is BEYOND RIDICULOUS that we STILL don't have tethering!

do you think apple will/wont charge an additional cost to access iChat on iPhone and why?

I can also see this happening, but it wouldn't be Apple, it would be AT&T!

Anyone ever tried Video over 3G? As its circuit switched with max 64kbit/s the quality always sucks.

With WiFi you can possibly get higher resolution and better quality.

Hopefully it will work over 3G but who knows, I didn't think we would see iChat over the cell network until LTE. I think it is a safe bet that the new iPhone will have 802.11n though. We will see!

It would be cool if you could switch from the forward facing camera to the rear facing camera during video chats so you could show people 'stuff' while watching their reaction.:)

Not only that but switch from front to back when taking pics too, or even video. You won't need a physical button to take a self pic anymore! I actually designed this a while ago: Top right corner displays secondary camera and you tap it to flip and switch cams like the album art when in the iPod! :D Sorry I'm not at my computer right now or I would post my mockup. I have posted it here before but I can't seem to find it. It's been a while. Is there a way we can search image posts on here?

No video over 3G?

Ah, that makes it utterly useless. I only have reliable wifi when I'm at home, and I have a fully functioning computer at home...

i doubt the new iphone will have a front facing camera. just doesnt make sense to video chat.

Where have you been for the last week?

It's funny how everybody talks about AT&T but forget the iPhone is now globalized. Video chat should be implemented on 3G networks - they use it in Europe, Japan, etc and well Canada has had tethering since the beginning, so video ichat shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully the 3G will be enabled for the rest of the world...

The code written in the operating system itself is what determines if a given feature exists universally or not. Plist files are what determine which of these features are activated (or deactivated) specific to the carrier.

Point being, the operating system itself is coded universally to support all features. If there are no 3G references in any of the video chat strings, then NO ONE is getting voice chat over 3G.

It still probably will, but that camera will allow for much more, and you always use it at WiFI hot spot, so give it to me and I will worry about how it works.

You stay with the Blueberry. ;)

That is fine, sooner or later we will go to 4G and then that camera will make sense.

Off topic:

Why the hell doesn't Sony get its game right!!!!!!
Apple is so pwning their a**.

Sony is a bloated company, it take time for them to turn the boat around.

But overall they still have great products, their HDTV are incredible, the PS3 is a dream to use, and the blue-ray works perfect. They have some good phones, just because they can't do everything does not make them a bad company, just a bloated one.

why does everyone assume a second camera will be used for ichat videoconferencing? that's fine but the bandwidth requirements will kill an already crippled att network.

Because 1) there are networks out there that already run video conferencing just perfectly and 2) AT&T problem =/= not the rest of the worlds problem.
Also the whole video conferencing stuff mentioned in the first post kind of assumes there is going to be a camera for videoconferencing.

That is fine, sooner or later we will go to 4G and then that camera will make sense.

Considering that the likelihood of the new iPhone supporing the 4G standard is extremely low, then that reality would entail a brand new phone. Also keep in mind AT&T's ridiculous 4G roadmap and you will find that this reality is likely 3+ iPhone generations away.

att has video chat

i tried this feature when they rolled it out because it was free for 30 or 60 days.... works fine for what is... video over 3g.. problem was lack of strong 3g coverage... it is 9.99 a month i think...

Reminds me of my DSi......That I am using right now :)

iPhone with a front facing camera and iChat will be AWESOME!

iChat with WiFi only, SUCKS!

Let's hope Apple and AT&T get it together on this.

Check out USTREAM in the meantime.

I hope they will allow 3rd party apps to use it too.

I'm envisioning multiple phones using a Skype app with video chat.

We'll see i suppose.

Man that Sucks bloody AT&T holding back the rest of the world. Here in Australia our worst network provider still has faster speeds then AT&T. Its not uncommon for me to do a speed test on my iPhone and get download speeds of a minimum of 2.5Mbps to a maximum of 6.4 Mbps
