I have had mixed results connecting home Pod Mini's to my 4K TV, I usually only try it when watching the odd movie that I want a little better sound experience. This usually requires seeking the pod numerous times until the selection sticks.
Last night, my experience was incredible. I would select the Pods and before I could exit, the selection would revert to TV speakers.???? I have a Yamaha WX-030 speaker that connects first time, every time. What gives Apple?

tvOS and Homepod OS 15 will bring permanent connection and system wide sound across all apps for the apple tv 4k and the homepod minis. Just hang on there.

well its still not in the beta released today...so it looks like we will have to hope its available in 15.1

It is available now.

What happens its that the Homepods Minis also need to be on audioOS 15 for it to work.

Don´t bother to install any betas, its risky. Just wait to until the official release on September 20.

I've a 2021 ATV 4K and HomePod mini upstairs, each on the latest software. I've a first generation ATV 4K with a pair of HomePod minis downstairs, each on the latest software as well. For some reason, I'm only given the option to select the HomePod mini as default on the upstairs 2021 ATV. I can even select the downstairs HomePod minis from there. However, downstairs, the first generation ATV 4K gives no option other than TV Speakers.

Could it be that the default audio output to HomePods is only for the newest gen ATVs?

Make sure the HomePods and Apple TV are in the same “room” in the Home app.
Thanks for the advice. I'd seen that posted and made sure I'd done so. However, I also noticed that I'd multiple hubs assigned. Some of which were no longer connected. Quite a mess. I was able to remove what wasn't being used and, more or less, cleaned things up. That seemed to have done the trick. Thanks again.

I updated everything yesterday and it gave the option to use the HomePods on first startup. Everything working fine so far. 👍

I am at 14.7
My TV stopped outputting sound I switched over to AppleTV. Had to reset the output to Homepod minis a couple of times, but finally the setting stuck. Tonight, the homepods were still the default. Going to wait a few days before updating.

You need 15.0 on both the homepods and the apple tv to use the default audio output setting. Highly recommended.

I have my first apple tv since few days and managed it to work with the sound over the HomePod mini!

Now its working also with my tv-receiver, so the apple HomePod is the SoundSource for it...

When i try to airplay from my macbook or my phone it doesn't work, airplay doesn't start....

If i try directly from youtube or Fotos from the airplay-button it works!

Could anyone help?

ps:
the only way to fix this is when i switch the sound to the normal tv speakers, but this is exactly what i don't want!
(also the new apple tv beta doesn't fix this)

While I am very pleased that the Minis are now my AppleTV defaults, I have noticed that the Minis no longer respond the same to being stand alone Home audio devices. “Hey Siri play music” gets a response but no sound. Even though Apple TV and my TV are off, that link remains intact. From my iPad, I can only AirPlay to the AppleTV, not the two paired Minis that I want use. I have two other Minis in my home which are not connected to the AppleTV that are available for Airplay. Now the setting we all wanted is causing reverse grief. From the Home App, I have to open AppleTV and set the default output back to TV speakers. This release the Minis back function properly in the AirPlay environment.
Because I believe AppleTV has A hub role, it is never really off. Would this assumption be correct?
If so, the current default setting could frustrate many great features that we are starting to appreciate - intercom and alerts in particular.

This have been like this since november 2020, when the feature was originally introduced for the OG Homepods.

This, however, is not an issue, but by design.

They became slaves of the Apple TV, so to speak. When the apple tv is sleeping and you ask them to play music, they do trough the apple tv music app, even though the apple tv led remain off. Same with podcast and other things. If you unplug the apple tv, they stop working. If you want to airplay just the audio of a video to the homepods, you can´t, as the Apple TV turns on.

I do not like it, so I set them (my OG Homepods) as default when I´m going to use my Apple TV, and when I finished I revert back to my internal tv speakers, so the Homepods are independent again. Couple of clicks. No big deal.

I suggest you do the same with your Minis.

The default option is better than the Airplay menu selection for Apple TV use with the Homepods since it works system wide, for all apps, including video games.

In defence of Apple, there are two situations in play. The Mini is an awesome stand alone device. I have one in the shop and it is truly a great little ball. The Mini is also a great little Apple TV sound add on, not something that is sold as an integrated component with ATV.
When you Airplay anything, you have to go through some steps to connect. ATV and TVOS are for TV.
We can connect many devices to ATV and you do not mind learning the drill because the benefit is there.
For those who only want Minis to be part of their TV sounds experience, Apple finally fixed TVOS to allow you to set the default out put to Mini.
My initial frustration with ATV and HPMini was the difficulty in simply switching the audio out from TV to Mini and getting the change to stick. It was a pain. Now that works.
If you want to use the TV room Minis for 2 different functions, you just have to switch the ATV Sound out default back to TV.
The trick is, ATV is a hub, it never really turns off. You connect many airplay devices and disconnect them at will. In this case, the ATV is creating the connection, so it makes sense that the ATV has to break or release the connection.
You can do this by switching the default back to TV when finished. The Home App allows control, but I have not fully tested it yet. I was able to reset my ATV default, and play Apple Music tunes from my Apple desktop, so should be doable from the Home app via any configured device.

Some of it is just learning.

I just dont get it since i use my HomePods as tv sound, my airplay is broken, but:

When i use it from youtube directly via safari via airplay button it works, even from other options, but via the AirPlay from the Menubar via Macbook it doesn't work anymore, gets blue shortly but doesn't work - anyone has a idea?

Like i said, via youtube or different streaming sites it works via their AirPlay Button..

It was maddening to me until I think I have figured out that they actually designed it to where :apple:TV can capture the big HomePods and not give them back to AirPlay without manually de-selecting it. The big HomePods do sound surprisingly good while captured by :apple:TV, though.

Because they support virtual dolby 5.1/7.1/Atmos playback, whereas the Minis do not.

I have a pile of pretty decent audio equipment in the basement because these minis deliver a very high quality in a nice small package. All I can say is it works for me. From my first Apple TV the picture quality compared to the ADSL set top box was and still is superior. I like where Apple is taking this mini idea. We have to be patient as these concepts evolve.

I agree. I was merely explaining to the other user why the OG Homepods sounded that good to him with the apple tv, and this is simply because, sound wise, audio tech wise, and hardware wise they are MUCH BETTER than the Minis. Doesn´t mean that the Minis sound bad at all, but really there is no comparison.

I have an original Homepod stereo pair with an Apple TV, and a Mini in the kitchen. Happy with all of them.
