I need to start planning what to do with my $0.46 settlement.

... which will only be good on the Apple store for Apple-branded items. Those were the terms on the settlement I got some years ago, I think for a 3rd-gen iPod battery live thing. There was almost nothing on the store <= the amount that was Apple-branded.

If they reimburse people and cover repairs, that'd be different. I did have my 2007 MBP mobo replaced for a graphics chip failure a few years back; that system later suffered mechanical trauma and I no longer have it so I dunno if it came back. If these problems with 2011 models surfaced during the warranty period I think there's a legitimate case here, but if they're only surfacing now it might be a hard sell.

My 13in 2011 MacBook Pro had this issue but I had the logic board and a memory module replaced via AppleCare+ to resolve it. When buying an expensive item from Apple, AppleCare+ is a must.

No it most certainly is not. The products are as expensive as hell and should last well in normal use. If you have the time to go for it, in the Uk at least the Sale of Goods act states that you have rights for shoddy made goods well after the guarantee ends.

I had this issue 4 times! and apple then just gave me the next gen one.

Appe's support is too good!

I'm so glad I didn't have to go through that. My only failed twice before a replacement, but AppleCare damaged my old one's unibody earlier so that may have played a part.

There should be one for the iMac DVD drives as well. Mine stopped reading discs after just 2 years and I've seen lots of posts on the Apple forums of people complaining about the same thing. It's nothing to do with the user, it's just rubbish hardware. Meanwhile I have PC's I've built with £10 drives in them still working after 10 YEARS. To get the iMac drive fixed would probably cost over £100. Takes the piss really.

What is going on with these GPU makers. First it was the Nvidia 8600 GT, then the AMD 6750. Who's next.

Don't get a mac with separate graphics chip

It looks like the lesson to be learned is to stay away from apple products that have separate graphics chips as they all seem to fail unless you're very lucky.

...maybe that "new" iMac with integrated intel graphics that we all made fun of a few months ago is not such a bad deal after all...?

Iamthinking

Do these models have switchable graphics? (meaning you could force the OS to always use Intel graphics) Guessing not.

I realize that cripples the machine, but using slower graphics is better than not using the computer at all.
***Correction***
Checking off "Automatic Graphics Switching" forces the computer to stick to the dGPU and not the iGPU (thanks Traverse)

Forget about the lawsuit. I just want to be reimburse for the $400 I spent replacing my logic board.

Also, is there a definitive test for a dodgy GPU?

Mine just went out on me in an instant. Restarted my computer and could get past the apple logo which had lines running through it. It's a very troubling experience.

Maybe someone can unearth Jony Ive’s trademark oral embellishments upon that laptop model’s introduction. There might be an obscure nugget such as, “We crammed so much into a small and lightweight shell that incidentals such as durability had to take a back seat.”

Finally! I feel that the Apple of old would have addressed this sooner.
They're dragging their feet on this.

This is clearly a manufacturing defect, as was the case with the nvidia Geforce 8600M and GT 330M GPUs in Macbook Pros and more relevant to this case the AMD 6970M GPUs in iMacs.

Had my Macbook Pro 2007 logic board replaced. Worked for a year then failed:

Had my Macbook Pro 2010 logic board replaced. Still functions, for now:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

iMac logic board replacement program:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5167

We need a replacement program for the 2011 Macbook Pro!

Yes, you can check off "Automatic Graphics Switching" which forces the computer to stick to only the intel graphics for better battery life.

Forget about the lawsuit. I just want to be reimburse for the $400 I spent replacing my logic board.

This is incorrect. Turning off "Automatic Graphics Switching" forces the dGPU, not the iGPU.

I am telling you...the Quartz system causes the graphics card to flaw, fail, and cause anomalies. I have even seen it in Yosemite when I was using Photo Booth, on my iMac that I JUST had the graphics card replaced.

If I were guessing, Aperture uses Quartz and initializes Quartz at startup, and this sends calls to the graphic card, which it's all flawed. It's the Quartz drivers causing the graphics cards to fail!!

I had exactly these graphics issues (3y 1m old MBP 15" Early 2011), and after one hour of discussions and phone calls, Apple replaced the logic board free of charge as my Apple Care contract had expired only one month ago. Thank you, Apple, this saved me 500€, and I was able to sell this "lemon" MacBookPro for 900€ to someone else :p

My uncle had the 27" iMac issue. After several attempts at fixing the problem, they eventually just gave him a new one. Of course he's 6'4" and has a way of getting REALLY fussy & irritating until he gets his way.

I've got a 15" 2011 MBP with the AMD 6770, never had any issues with it. Is this something that will happen eventually then?

To those in the UK with these problems, get yourself to that Genius bar and get a free repair. My 2010 MacBook Pro 15" which I still use, had the dreaded Nvidia GPU fault, it worked fine for over 3 years?? Anyway I went to the Apple store not expecting the best as it was over 3 years old, and they confirmed the computer WAS affected by a faulty Nvidia GPU and they replaced the logic board totally free there and then, well I went round the shops for 3 hours and then went and picked it up.

I was advised that under EU legislation as the product was faulty at point of sale, they HAVE to repair the fault free of charge.

And I have to say I had a couple of GPU glitches after but touch wood it's been fine for a while now, I don't expect anymore issues hopefully. Which is just as well as it's my only computer and I don't have the cash for a new one, would need to save up.

Now if I was in America and Apple would not repair the fault knowing in Europe they have to then I too would be very very annoyed.

And as the Genius bar guy said, Apple's products are only as good as their supplied components, which is true as you wouldn't expect AMD or Nvidia to churn out thousands of faulty GPU's but there you go..

Another major problem is the iPhone 4S wifi issues after iOS 7 gets installed. We should make a partition on that too..

If this was an iMac, nobody would care. '06 to '07 iMacs were plagued by GPU failures, especially the 2006 24" iMac. Nothing was done about it beyond a blog post somewhere and hundreds of people asking about it on discussions.apple.com.
