Yep! Total brain dead moment. Still urkes me that this company clearly sold a defective unit though advertising that it was 100% guaranteed to work and was leak free. Like I said, I'm hopeful that the seller sees the photo I sent and completes the return. If not, I guess I have an extra pump laying around.

EDIT: Great news, the seller agreed to a full refund, and told me to keep the item, though, it's of no use to me other than spare pump parts.

Refurb it and sell it

Not a bad idea MacCubed! Let's hope I can prove myself on my own system first! Here's another pic waiting for the epoxy to dry on my reopened syringe hole. Do you agree that I shouldn't mess with the bottom side (cpu b) just yet since it had temps around 30-40C before this most recent teardown?

Yeah I wouldn't touch CPU B

I agree! I'm assuming 30-50C is pretty normal for these guys if everything is functioning flawless?

Mine usually idles at the high ned at 50C, it is a single pump version, but as I have said, it is a DVT Quad so I'm gonna leave it original

Can you pop off the copper water block and see if that's dirty/clogged? That might be easier than taking apart the pump. Looks like 4 screws:

Good news, I'm happy to report I'm writing this message from my Quad!!!!! The rebuild/flush has done the trick! The computer passed thermal calibration and is idle under 50C with 'automatic' energy settings. I'm hopeful that I'll be a happy camper for quite a while. :)

I really want to thank everyone that has responded to this and helped cheer and guide me through the process. I sure learned a lot!

Glad it worked out! I would set it to reduced, it makes it run a lot cooler

Yes the reduced setting is usually more then good enough for most tasks, but even the maximum setting is preferable to the automatic setting which tends to create wild cyclic swings in the fans.

Also are you gonna refurb the DP 2.5 Unit? Those are prone to failing, and finding a good one is rare, so people may pay a premium for a nice unit. The only issue I see is testing the pump... I guess you could build an PSU for the pump

^^
Just giving her a shakedown cruise. No intentions to keep it at that setting.

^
I'm investigating that, If I do, I'll definitely have to get my hands on a tower of that era to make sure it functions good before selling.

UPDATE!

Pretty excited. I just gambled on a craigslist ad for $50. Seller knew next to nothing about the machine. I could tell it was a late 2005 because the back of the machine had the plastic antenna doo-hickey. On inspection, popped rivvet and some scaring on the case. So much dust...Good news is, after removing the G5 cover, it's a dual pump quad under there! Put my hard drive in from my failing quad and low and behold, this LCS system appears to be in fantastic condition. (screenshot shows great idle temps and low fans)

Now...I have a parts machine and scored another 4gb of ram! :) I think I'm going to attempt to move the processor into my mint G5 case. Just wanted to ask and see if anyone had any pros and cons of doing that. I would need to run the thermal calibrater again, anything else?

Wow, very excited to be typing this from the Quad! Did the brain transplant and thermal calibration tonight and now have a wonderful Quad and a nice part machine if I ever need anything. Temperatures and fans are running within spec.

Might throw SSD back in and get my hands on 16gb of ram just for the heck of it. But for now, I'm a very happy camper.

I would not bother spending the money to get 16 GB of RAM as very few applications can use that much and for most under Leopard, their usage will likely never exceed 4 GB at the most total.

Valid. I think if I did it would just be for my own joy of looking at system profiler.

Memory is vague, but doesn't FCP 4-7 not even utilize more than 4gb and is limited to 32-bit? I seem to remember desperately waiting for FCP 8 to be 64-bit, but that dream was never fully realized.

If you can get the RAM cheaply enough then it is your money to justify on how to spend.

I finally got around to rebuilding the part machine I used to get my main Quad up and running. I moved my original dual LCS system I previously flushed and sealed up with JB Weld. It runs about the same temp as it did in the other machine. The only difference is, I can't get it to pass thermal calibration (the red over temp light kicks in a few minutes after starting the cali and then fails. Also fails with a box fan in front of it). I booted into OS X and the temps seem about the same, nothing too crazy. Do I absolutely need to run thermal calibration?
