so i used "temperature monitor" while on 650m the temp hits about 85C on the discrete chip.

~82˚C, at idle? You should come over to the Intel side already :) My MacBook Pro doesn't hit the 80's unless I'm encoding.

Not idle. I was installing Qt4-mac from Macports. One of the largest applications they have. Takes about six GB of disk space, and it is compiled from source. This is the Dual 2.7, and because the heat and power consumption of the G5 processor does not scale linearly with speed, it runs very hot, especially given that it is liquid cooled.

I do have Intel Macs, like the i7 I'm typing on, but I have a little project going on with the G5.

That good or bad?

i have no clue, didn't really hear the fan kick in too hard *actually not hard at all*. so i guess its OK for it to be chilling around 85 C. or else the fan would be on like a jet plane.

update.

now im using iStat Pro to monitor my stuff...and during a Dominion game (probably the most intents facepace of all LOL matches) with all settings set on "very low", "no shadow".

the 650m gpu is about 80C and cpu about 60C with L/R fans running at 2300 rpm

so i can't hear the fan at all. so i bet if i use a fan controller app and set the fan at around 3500-4000 rpm during game, i bet the temp will drop to around 70C. and at this low temp. i can play LOL all day and night with out having any longevity effects on the components.

would yall agree?

just thought i would share my temperatures with you guys.

using the rMBP in signature on these settings:
Max resolution 2880 X 1800
all settings high
no v-sync
fps range between 48-70 (the rMBP underclockong thing hits once i an while, getting it down to 20 fps)
Temperature around 100Thing the fans is going around 4500 to max rpm

No idea why you have that issue, even in 5v5s I suffer no drop of frame rates. Very playable at max settings and resolution on the native client for me. I have the 2.6GHz/16GB combination if that would have any effect on this.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, or what you guys are doing right, but with everything maxed (except Shadows: Low), full resolution, I'm getting 48 - 56 FPS during normal laning combat, and dips to 29 - 36 during teamfights. If I pick an empty patch of terrain to stare at, it gets to about 77, but to keep it consistently above ~40 during huge fights I've been bumping the resolution down to 1920x1200 in Windows, 2100ishx1280 in the new native client.
