comparing a camera to a smartphone... what a smart thing to do 🤦🏻‍♂️
The comparison is absolutely valid.

why?

Replaceable battery doesn’t result in lack of ports or water resistance, like the OP claimed.

like I said previously, good designers can still design a good looking stylish product.

How so? If the battery fails, you can get it replaced.

Apple offers the service. Third party companies offer the service. It isn't terribly expensive.

Again, if someone is throwing out (or recycling) a phone simply due to a faulty battery, that's on THEM.

Which of your jeans pockets does it comfortably fit in?
All of them. Reason - It’s not bulky.

waterproofing plus replaceable battery doesn’t automatically result in a bulky product. Something quite a few people overlook.

Does a camera have all of the internals of a smartphone? Meant to be used in the same manner. Travel with you 24x7? (There may be some in that universe) is as sleek as an iPhone?

Nobody has designed a smartphone with the features and functions of the iPhone pro max with a removable battery, without any loss of features and no depth differences.

When that happens, I’ll be a believer.

What's the camera model?

I'm unaware of a waterproof compact camera thinner than 28 or 29mm.

Wait, why are so many people upset about this? How is making a phone last longer a bad thing? Or do they have shares that it would most likely affect? lol

Mostly because the proposal is one government interfering in the free market, potentially adversely impacting phone design/capabilities globally, to solve a problem that doesn't really exist.

You can already get your phone battery replaced, and even Apple's price isn't all that expensive.
I haven't priced third-party shops or checked Samsung/LG/Moto/HTC/etc pricing for their battery replacement pricing.

oooooh ok. Thanks for explaining.

I think the focus on letting the phone be serviced is the key. IE the user should be able to replace a battery at home (like we do today) without the need to go to an apple store. This still requires a few tools (inexpensive) but gives the user the right and freedom to keep the device functional even in the absense of support.

Also, guys, making a battery compartment doesn't mean it won't be water proof and would be ugly. There is plenty of design that could be done to accommodate this.

This seems much more along the lines for a right to repair bill, not for the government to control the design of products.

Economically this matters because allowing 3rd party repair (self repair) of a phone allows the life of that phone to be greatly extended and at competitive (lower) costs. This allows the phone to avoid going into the garbage for a lot longer than if repairs could only be done by Apple.

I've repaired a few iPhones for family and saved a couple hundred bucks and a couple hours. The changes Apple is making to the phones actually PREVENTS me from doing so as it will display messages on the screen saying it has an unsupported battery. This kind of stuff is grossly unneeded and shows the greedy, ugly side of Apple IMO.

... any possible chance this might have something to do with avoiding poorly manufactured third party batteries exploding in people's pockets, resulting in bad press and lawsuits?

I hadn't looked - is it still a problem if you use say a battery from ifixit?

I do agree on a "right to repair" mandate to promote the free market.

The next is user replaceable/upgradable storage, then user replaceable/upgradable memory, then CPU, then logic board, eventually individually user replaceable transistors.

If this happens it would be amazing news.

People can uptalk apple all they want, but they are a long term practitioner and masterof planed obsolescence. If you refuse to see this while they sell you SSD space and RAM at a crazy premium price i don't know what to tell you. And of cause you could find a way to plug in a micro SD somewhere in your iPad rather than having to buy a new one when you notice that 32gb is not that much in 2020.
Apple is the company that had to be forced to offer battery replacements for iPod and alike, Apple is the company that charges you silly prices to replace your battery. They pretend to be greener than they are, as much as i love a good amount of their products.
Apples is the company that dos not allow you to use your iPad as a second screen if your computer is to old. A computer that very much can use the iPad as a second screen with third party Apps.
Apple is the company that cuts of all the battery health Apps from the App Store because they now offer that service native in the OS... to than switch over to telling everyone with a third party battery that they need to visit a apple service partner ASAP.
They are not nice. They want your money. And thats more important to them than the environment. It just is.

A friend recently told me a smartphone is like a toaster. It already dos everything you will ever need, you never will need a new one. Like, the amount of people that need a iPhone 11 pro that can not only record 4k with 3 lenses but also edit it is so tiny that it is a joke.

I am only on my second smart phone. The first one was a google nexus 3, now i have been on the iPhone SE almost since it has been released. Recently replaced the battery under big stress, luckily nothing broke. Now it feels like a new device. It dos everything i need it to do and i dread that Apple will probably cut it of iOS updates and compatibility by the end of this year. It's perfect. It's small, it's powerful enough to get everything don i need (and more, but i stoped using games and magic alike). Why would i buy a new one? Especially if that new one by now is like 2-4 times the price.

How would apple get sued if a third party battery blows up? Its such a bad argument.

Your implication is that Apple is too stupid, too lazy, or too evil to make their batteries easy to replace.

They literally had to be sued into offering battery replacements. LITERALLY.

Europe is stupid.

I'll take a solidly built, nearly waterproof phone that lasts all day over a green bubble person's wet dream.

Europe is the best, I know no place better, believe me, I know, because nobody knows it better, I’m the expert on Europe so you better believe me.. like the europeans do, they’re nice, they believe me..

With all the evidence to the contrary I can’t believe this meme is still going around. The rest of the post, while it is your opinion seems like a bunch of “facts” strung together that don’t necessarily form the conclusion.

Easy.

Used phone, buyer doesn’t know.

Buyer does know, but lies in hopes of a settlement.

Lawsuits don’t necessarily follow logic.

And I didn’t argue anything, just tossed out an idea for consideration/discussion

What is next? User accessible SD card for storage?

"Yeah Apple, I'm sure a 16GB is plenty for my phone."

Looks around after purchasing an iPhone.

"Well, after I insert this 1TB SD card, then it's enough!"

My only worry is that if Apple is forced to give us removable batteries, it will then find other ways to implement planned obsolescence. Swapping out a dead battery is easy today, but if other components are designed to fail, then repairs might not be easy or possible.

We want that option here right?

Look this phone has already beaten APPLE iphone

60W wireless charging
48 MP camera
NO PORTS of any kind
120 degree wrap around screen

And they did nothing for watches? Even though they could be more expensive than phones, require a special tool to open, sometimes to remove the battery too, and they are no longer guaranteed to be waterproof if it’s not done by the manufacturer… It has been like this forever and it looks that nobody ever thought it was not normal…
Indeed, the EU is always hungry for more things to regulate. I hope I’ll get my visa this year and get the hell out of here at last!

making sure that phones are able to be used longer, and in turn reducing e-waste.
if it is about regulation, what about mandating security updates for each released smartphone for at least 5 years or so. there are so many things that would keep one from using an older device, and ageing batteries are just one of them. and guess what, battery repair shops on almost every city district will replace the degraded ones in a bliss just for a few coins. strangely none of my iPhones actually needed battery replacement with 3 years of day-to-day heavy usage. so if this phenomenon only occurs every 3 years, i can totally spend that 20-30$ on replacing the battery in a shop _if_ it is required.

1.5 billion smartphones are sold each year.

Watches? Well, not quite as many.
