Serial leaker Sonny Dickson is back today with a new image of some protective cases for Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 Pro, and the large camera hole is certainly the standout feature on show.

The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are expected to debut a major redesign of the rear camera bump, replacing the traditional square module with a horizontal, rectangular bar that stretches across the back of the device. This new layout resembles the runway-style camera panel seen on Google Pixel phones.

Apple's iPhones have maintained the same front-facing design language for several years, and the rear is one of the few remaining areas for meaningful visual evolution. Based on CAD renders and leaked parts, the updated bump retains the triangular triple-lens setup on the left, but now the LiDAR scanner, microphone, and flash are repositioned to the right, creating a more symmetrical design.

It's not clear what Apple's rationale is for the design shift, but it may allow for larger or more thermally efficient components, improved spatial separation of sensors for more accurate depth mapping, or simply more efficient internal packaging as Apple continues to shrink the main logic board.

The bump's uniform color, which is reportedly matched with the rest of the chassis, suggests Apple is aiming for a more unified and visually subdued design language than previously thought. Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max alongside the regular iPhone 17 and an all-new ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air around mid-September. I've always stuck with the Pro models, but I'm seriously considering the regular iPhone 17 this time around. The new Pro design just feels really odd to me, and there are rumors that they’re cutting the optical zoom from 5x down to 3x.

The rumour is that it will be 3x with a 48MP sensor, so still allowing ~6x zoom at 12MP, the same way the main camera has a 12MP 2x zoom. I welcome this change as I miss the 3x focal length.

Apple (and others) really should stop releasing a 'new' phone every year as there is very little making a new model worth it. Likewise with OS 'updates', etc. It's hard to generate customer excitement when you don't actually provide anything worth getting excited about. Minor camera improvements, adding a button, changing the bloody screen resolution yet again, etc are hardly worth the effort IMO and getting rather tiresome. It's also better for the environment with less e-waste, transport, manufacturing, etc.

I just want another “Snow Leopard” update. Both iOS and macOS. The OSs have become bloated and riddled with bugs and inconsistency between apps. I want it to go back to “it just works” era.

I hope on top of this that they add an 8x lens (and that that is the reason for the enlarged bump). If they do, most likely it would be 12MP at first, but hopefully would soon be updated to 48MP for a 16x 12MP crop. That would cover the .5x-16x range pretty decently with at least 12MP photos at every zoom level except between 2x-3x and 6x-8x which I think is an acceptable compromise. (Currently on the 16 Pro, between 2x-5x are less than 12MP.)

If it’s gonna be that big, the lens better be that big.

Last month I rebooted my old Macbook Pro 2011 with Snow Leopard. With a SSD inside the boot screen didn't even appear. It was near instantly ready to log on after the boing. Fun fact: the Macbook Pro 2011 came with MacOS Lion, but I wiped it and installed Snow Leopard instead. Worked great for years.

Why do we need a bump ? Frankly what is important is the max thickness, not the min one. Why not reorganize the hardware to get either thiner or longer battery life (or any other advantage)?
