There's literally no reason the cameras need to be rearranged.

I'm just spitballing here, but this obviously moves the flash, lidar, and mic away from the camera array. Could there be function in that? I'm trying to think of why on earth they're doing this other than maybe creating a tiny amount of extra volume (but that doesn't seem significant). I'm scratching my head.

Perhaps we should wait and see what the reasoning for this is before we past judgement. There might be some hardware behind it that necessitates this extra space and is more cost efficient this way than molding the glass.
No, this is MR where we complain instead

This iPhone is just going to be too heavy and ugly. Still have the 14Pro and have been waiting for Apple to produce a truly sleek pro iPhone for some time. It’s just not going to happen.

This is looking like the Boeing 737 Max of phones. Camera (Engines) way too big for the (air)frame and tends to fly straight into the ground.

This would look so much better if the phone was shaped like a wedge instead of a tumor on a slab. Ditch the parallel front and back and design something new for a change. They’ve designed a trash can before, it’s time for the door stop.

Wouldn't it be 3.5x and then 7x with lossless digital zoom from cropping down to 12MP on the increased 48MP sensor? Seems more flexible than 5x to me as you can still get a full resolution 12MP photo at 7x zoom, and native 3.5x which is more useful for mid distance shots.
As someone who uses the 3x in my 14 Pro often, 3.5x 48MP telescopic sounds perfect to me.

Quite sure by now that this is going to be the final design. Hopefully the new 48MP lens will allow 10x optical quality like zoom. Waiting to hear about the colour options this year.

they gonna be lonely sitting in back rooms of Apple outside of stores in rich areas where people will be able to afford these. Rest of us gonna be eating potatoes.
s/potatoes/corn/

Lots of corn

We’re all going to be eating nothing but corn.

We import a fairly large amount of potatoes but a negligible amount of corn. Trump’s tariffs if they fully go into effect will spike the price of potatoes

Learn to love corn

also heard: 3.5x. and that would allow for 7x "optical quality" (a 12mp crop from the 3.5 lens and sensor)

the huge camera bump: allegedly, because they had to turn the 3.5x by 90 degrees in order to accommodate the larger camera hardware for the tele.

Apple is really really pushing the boundary of how big a camera bump can be, yet not be counted in the thickness of the phone.

That photo is looking like 30% of the back is camera bump; they going to try for 40%? 50%? will they still measure thickess at the thinnest point when it tips over 51%?

I still think that the larger camera bump will allow for 48 megapixel periscope-style telephoto lens system with 10x optical zoom and high quality 100x digital zoom.
