Apple released the iPhone 3G S on Monday with a case that is physically identical to the current iPhone 3G. As a result, most felt that the matte case photos that were leaked back in February were likely fake. Strangely enough, however, the photos do appear to have been real cases for the iPhone 3G S.

The leaked matte case design was clearly marked with a new model number A1303 and FCC ID BCGA1303A. Based on the official records released yesterday, this FCC ID does correlate to the new iPhone 3G S:

These model numbers and FCC ID's follow no obvious progression so it seems unlikely that someone simply got lucky in guessing. We're not sure if plans simply had changed at the last minute, but the original leaked case was clearly produced by Apple.

Hmm. I wonder what changed their minds. I would have loved to see a matte body...

Maybe it is only meant for china after all or they decided to scrap it last minute

So we really had a picture of it already (like usual). I still don't understand how a lot of Apple's products get leaked all the time.

This case would have been much more appropriate for the 3G S.

a)it would have distinguished it from the 3G
b)it looks much nicer

I wish they would have changed it to the matte design. It would have been nice for there to be some difference between the old 3g and 3g s designs, and it probably would not have been quite as big of a fingerprint magnet.

Then again the look of the iPhone is pretty classy, so why mess with a good thing.

They had the matte case all ready to go and then the marketing division pitched the idea for the new commercial.

Maybe it was suppose to accompany the 3GS' fingerprint-resistant oleophobic screen, but they pulled it for some reason. Maybe it didn't work as expected... a matte coating that is resistant to oils would have been even more awesome.

Me likey matte. The shiny looks cheap in the pictures. I guess it doesn't matter anyway since I'll be using a protective cover.

I bumped into a friend today who I hadn't seen a while and he was showing me his iPhone 3G refurb he got last month. He uses a rubber case protector which he affectionately referred to as the iCondom :D

well the 3G will soon be phased out. The Matte looked cool but that rubbery matte material is harder to clean than smooth plastic. Any type of grease shows right up on a matte surface. Ive had phone covers that looked like pretty much the same material.

Ever see the original Willy Wonka? The only way he was able to eliminate others from finding out his secrets was to bring all production in house and import employees that couldn't leave.

That's the only way information stays in house. Apple has suppliers all over the world, parts to order in advance, etc.

Then of course there's the stuff they leak on purpose to generate buzz...

Perhaps thats just what the case looks like at some point in the process?

Maybe before this new coating on it?

Big Deal

Anyone how is smart would put a good case on it. I had mine naked and sexy for a while until my 6 y/o cousin threw it while playing with that light saber app. I now have a nice crack in the screen :(

Or, more likely, given the way the Apple logo and text were applied to the iPhone 3G, this is the case, but lacking the clear coat.
