Offer the MATTE CASES!

I would MUCH rather have a matte version!! The smooth glossy case is just a bad design.

Maybe it's the "one more thing" that people find out when it arrives.... :D

That would be sooo awesome. Like opening a surprise present on Christmas that you knew nothing about before hand...

Sucks that people would probably take Apple to court over it.

I don't believe Apple will be following through with the matte black finishes. If you go back to the release of the matte black MacBook, there were numerous cases where the black was rubbing off and showing up white. One problem was that the paint used was not up to the challenges of sweat and oils ones body produces. If you notice, that black MacBook no longer exists in Apple's current line up. Apple scrapped the idea even after the apparent "fix" with a different paint because of the hassle of it. Also, Apple likes to create hardware that looks alike. Now with the matte black MacBook gone, what would it pair up with? Apple used to stick to: White for consumer products, Metal for professional product. With the now mixing of metal and black in the MBP and the iMac, the gloss black fits right in with it.

There is another theory of mine. iPod touch anyone? With the 3G S getting video, I suspect Apple will be giving the touch a camera soon. To keep it somewhat similar and be able to use the same applications that the iPhone can. And yes, I do realize that it says "iPhone" in the photo, but you'll notice that it is showing flash brightness while all the other writing is not.

Or I could just be another crazy guy ranting about "pretty technology"

I am also thinking something along these lines, after all, with the Pre and Zune HD and potential Zune Phone coming -- there are plenty of reasons to believe another iPhone is coming still this year...

My thoughts:

Apple hasn't announced iPhone 3,1. Anyone else catch that?
Possibly a matte OLED (maybe iChat) iPhone pro ish thing released holiday season. For some reason the 3g S doesn't seem like a TRUE sequel. My guess: 32gb iPhone pro with iChat and oled screen and matte case for around 600 dollars Christmas time. (or 500 if at&t drops price of unsubsidized by 100)

leaked info

Maybe that leak was a test to see who is leaking info.

Here I go. I hate to say "a close friend of mine who works at Apple...", but I do have a friend who used to work for Apple in their testing department who told me that most all of the "leaked" items are done intentionally by Apple to create a stir about their new products. So I do not think that this was a test or sting operation, rather a prototype (unlikely as it is labeled and has all markings) or simply a phone that has not been clear coated yet. Either way, I do not think anyone lost their job or got slapped on the hand. BTW, send me a message if you want to know what my buddy did for Apple, it's pretty funny.

Photographic artifact?

Is it possible that the case in that photo is not matte at all but looks matte due to some aspect of its dirtiness or the photography equipment and/or method?

I've taken macro photos of surfaces that you'd never guess are the same surface when focused correctly. For example, I've taken macro shots of colored glass that you can easily see through with your eyes but looked nearly solid in the photo.

Maybe the picture just accentuated the surface below the lacquered outer layer?

I mean it's probably matte but just saying... could be another explanation :)

at&t

maybe AT&T wouldn't allow it in the US... OR they're not supporting it until "later this summer." ;)

those bastards, lol

I loved the cheap shots that Schiller and Forstall took at them during the keynote... shows that they obviously aren't happy with them, and I don't think they should be.

The image was leaked in February.

arn

Actually, from the moment I saw the matte case, I could have sworn it was leaked before the iPhone 3G came out. I could be totally wrong. It just looked so familiar. Like I've seen it before - and I know I'm not thinking of the leaked 3G case that was the 3G case, I mean this one. I could be losing it, I don't know...

It's a shame that they didn't use this. It goes well with the new oleophobic matte screens the 3gs has.

that is extremely improbable. take a picture of your 3G and let me see it look matte

I hate the gloss finish on my 3G with a passion, the constant fingerprints always make it look dirty and cheap. Should have gone with the matte. Let's hope iPhone 4 is no longer glossy, can't stand it and it's way too slippery as well!!

Apple makes tons of different textures, materials to test. Maybe it didn't pass those tests, or simply it was saved for later iPhone.

Good decision if you ask me. Matte surfaces for a device like a phone are a bad idea. They get chewed up and look disgusting very fast.

Glossy only!

They didn't want more people to like the matte finish and then complain about the glossy MacBook screens! No matte from Apple. It's the new one-button mouse.

notice how on the real iphone 3gs pics on the apple page, it doesnt have the writing and symbols like the matte picture does. just the words "iphone" and "32GB"

Those aren't photos of the actual device, those are promo shots. The shipping iPhone has all of the writing and symbols.

this is a true picture of the new iphone, its was just taken in between the finish process before it was treated to look glossy...
